On the other hand, we've got some great slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie is the top player in the NFL in forced fumbles having seven, and Moore has the best tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. By deploying McDuffie in the slot when they're running nickel or dime-type packages, and then deploying him on the outside of base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his abilities. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a huge benefit when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also worth noting that their slot counterparts are just as good. Wide receivers with high slot grades score touchdowns in the same way as those on the perimeter. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent in their target distribution when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends.

That's why it's interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 because he plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of them. In actuality Lamb is running a greater number of routes in the slot than most of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup benefits for your team and helps to explain why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he plays the X position and makes huge plays on the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't as powerful as the other players in this ranking, but he's still a very high-graded receiver and is an excellent match for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a player who puts huge numbers with both types of targets is a different example. He has a very high slot receiving grade and is among the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws however, he's also a formidable player for contested-catch.

Another player on this list that's an authentic slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him an important part of his team's defensive team. He has struggled to stop passes from the outside and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This has been a result of playing alongside unsafe linebackers who can't match up with Hilton's size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
