Medication For Autism and ADHD
Many children and adults with autism use psychotropic medication. Some of these drugs can help to reduce the severity of disruptive or irritable behavior that is often caused by ADHD.
The medication for ADHD can improve the symptoms of Autism and reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity. They can also reduce problem behaviors like aggression, self-injury, licking and picking, trichotillomania, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
Stimulants
Autism can be extremely difficult for both parents and children However, medication isn't always the answer. Medicines can help manage certain disorders that are often associated with autism and can help improve the overall quality of life, but they won't cure your child's autism or make them "normal."
Stimulants are one of the most frequently prescribed medications for ADHD. It is not uncommon for children with autism to be diagnosed with ADHD and research has shown that stimulants can help improve the primary ADHD symptoms in these children such as hyperactivity inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Methylphenidate, or Ritalin is the most common stimulant. It improves the activity of dopamine within the brain. It is a neurotransmitter that aids in controlling mood, behavior, and reward systems.
Many parents are concerned about the consequences of psychotropic medications on their children. Some critics describe them as chemical straitjackets that allow schools and parents to handle difficult behavior. Some argue that the drugs don't solve the root issues that cause autistic kids so many problems. They include social interaction issues, anxiety and restricted, repetitive behavior.
A study published in Pediatrics discovered that stimulants, including dextroamphetamine or methylphenidate, can be effective in decreasing the primary adhd medication and pregnancy symptom that can interfere with school, family, and work life. These medications also appear to reduce irritability in these kids.
The same study revealed that atypical antipsychotics, like Aripiprazole and Risperidone (Abilify), may help with irritability among kids with autism and ADHD. This is a preliminary finding. Further research is needed to confirm these results and determine if these drugs can help with other types of irritability such as aggression or injuries.
Another concern is that the current studies don't analyze long-term use or other factors that are important, such as the possibility of abuse. And some studies are small or use different methods as compared to others, making it difficult to compare results. But if your child has ADHD and autism, it's worth a conversation with your doctor to determine which medication is appropriate for him or her.
Medication is an instrument that is useful for managing symptoms and improving the quality of life in families with children who suffer from autism and ADHD, but it should not be used as a replacement for therapy or other treatments. Your doctor will collaborate with you to determine the best dosage and medication to minimize the effects of side effects and ensure it's working for your child. Your child will benefit from medication to improve his or her focus and perform better at home and in school and fully engage in the treatments designed to help treat autism. Your child will be in a position to make the greatest gains possible.
