Speed receivers are more effective when they are lined up inside. They can be targeted further down the field and often face one-on-1 coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five of our list.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks also belong to this group. McDuffie is the top player in the NFL in forced fumbles, with seven, and Moore has the highest tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. Through using McDuffie in the slot when they run nickel or dime packages, and then placing him on the outside of base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is a huge asset when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also worth noting that their slot counterparts are just as excellent. As a whole wide receivers who have a high slot receiving grade score touchdowns around the same rate as those who play on the edge. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent with their targets when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends.

It's also interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, as he plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. In actuality Lamb is running a greater number of slot routes than most of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent method to gain matchup advantages for your team. Of course, he plays the X position, and makes some big plays on the perimeter too. Lamb isn't as explosive as the other players in this ranking however he's still an elite wide receiver that is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a player who puts huge numbers with both types of targets is a different example. He has a high slot receiving grade and is one of the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also a great opponent for contested catch.

Another player on this list who's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has been positioned in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks aligned in the slot, making him an important player in the defense of his team. On the other hand, he's had trouble to prevent passes from the outside and has allowed a negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is because he's been playing with linebackers and safety who can't compete with Hilton's speed, size or ability to run routes.
