Speedy wideouts are among the biggest benefit of moving into the slot as they typically have a much easier time getting open downfield when their route isn't covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout but would benefit from more slot time. He's a reliable target for intermediate and short routes.

The last spot on the list features more possession-based receivers who are better on intermediate and short routes than those in deep areas, such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy will be the Rams principal slot receiver this season is a sleeper choice. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are expected to play a larger role in downfield targets. Hamler, meanwhile, should excel on shorter-to-mid and intermediate routes, since this is where he was at his best when playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The proportion of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to run deep routes. However, it isn't always a true representation of a receiver's skill set as some receivers excel in the slot but cannot play deep, and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, for example is the league leader in the number of targets he receives per game (4.8) However, he's only 6th in the position that scores (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets are from outside, and it's a challenge to get a first down when playing a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

On the other hand, some receivers excel in playing inside and can't do much on the outside. Robby Anderson, for example, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his route in the slot, compared to only 26% of his boundary routes. This is a significant difference and illustrates how much more efficient he is when aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, is inside most of his passes and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also ran 51% of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when they are lined up inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field and are often swarmed by one-on-1 coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also in this group. Both have been able to generate pressures in the passing game and have McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles and Moore being the most effective tackle stop efficiency on this list (-3.5). Through using McDuffie in the slot when they're running nickel or dime packages and then placing him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his skills. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is an enormous benefit when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's important to note that their slot counterparts are equally excellent. Wide receivers who have an excellent slot grade score touchdowns about the same as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to outside and slot receivers, compared to other inside options, such as tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore interesting to see a player like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of them. In fact Lamb is running a greater number of routes in the slot than the majority of players on this list. This is an excellent way to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the most highly-rated receiver in our system.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes big plays from the perimeter too. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the other players in this ranking however, he's an extremely high-quality receiver and is a great match for the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, another player who is able to put huge numbers with both types of targets is a further example. He has a high slot receiver grade and is one of the league's best at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also a great contested-catch threat.

Another player on this list that's a true slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has played in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-Best Payouts Slots EPA for runs stopped among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a valuable member of his team's defensive unit. On the contrary, he's been unable to prevent passes from the outside and has given an unfavorable EPA against these types of targets. This is because he's playing with linebackers and safety who cannot compete with Hilton's speed, size, and ability to run routes.
