What is a Defra Approved Stove?

A defra-approved stove is wood-burning stove that has been approved by the UK Government Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. This permits them to be used in Smoke Control Areas within the UK.

nrg-defra-5kw-eco-design-stove-multifuelDefra is an English government department with responsibility for environmental protection, food production and standards, agriculture, and an thriving economy of the countryside. Defra has also created robust protocols to manage notifiable diseases.

Approved by Defra

Defra approved wood stoves and multi fuel stove defra approved-fuel stoves meet the standards of emission set by the government for use in Smoke Control Areas. These new standards do not restrict the use of wood stoves in these areas, but they do impose restrictions on how much smoke they produce when in operation.

At ESSE we are pleased to offer a wide range of stoves that are defra approved from the top manufacturers, including Arada, Burley, Parkray and Stovax. All of our Defra-approved stoves have the latest technology for clean burning. This means that they are equipped with secondary and tertiary combustion systems that help to cut down on emissions, resulting in less nuisance smoke coming from the chimney, and leaving a greener footprint.

Defra approved disinfectants are able to disinfect and clean hard surfaces, including structures, farm equipment, containers and vehicles. The Animal and Plant Health Agency maintains the Defra approved list of disinfectants. They charge a fee for new back-toback approval trade names. APHA can also test the effectiveness of a disinfectant at any time. This is done without the need to submit samples, and the results will be then added to the approved disinfectants list.

Approved for Smoke Control Areas

Many parts of the UK are classified as Smoke Control Areas, meaning you can only burn authorised fuels or appliances that are exempt from being used. This is in order to reduce air pollution from burning unauthorised fuels that cause nuisance smoke and ash build up. Most towns and cities are in this category, and to avoid breaking the law and getting an infringement charge, you must make use of the DEFRA approved stove, fire or fireplace to burn wood logs. Stovax offers a variety of multi-fuel stoves and wood stoves as well as fireplaces and fires that are DEFRA-approved to be used in Smoke Control Areas.

These stoves have passed strict DEFRA emissions tests and meet the minimum levels of smoke allowed in Smoke Control Areas. They can be used to burn different types of fuels like logs, anthracite and semi-anthracite briquettes, and manufactured smokeless fuels, such as heat logs. You can also use them to burn gas, electricity, low volatile steam or a mixture of these. You can find a list of all the approved fuels on the DEFRA website.

Look for the DEFRA Logo on the website of the manufacturer or in their showrooms when choosing a stove. If they've got the DEFRA logo, then you know that the stove is Defra approved for use in smoke controlled areas and can be used to burn wood in these areas. You'll still require an appropriate chimney liner, but the smaller 5kW stoves can be equipped with a 5" twin-wall stainless steel liner instead of the standard 6" liner.

You might be able to obtain an approval from your local authority if you do not have a DEFRA-approved stove. This permits you to burn fuels that are not approved for use in your home. You'll need to check the DEFRA site to determine if an exemption is available. There are also certain rules to follow for installing smoke alarms. It is also important to note that if you own an open fire, BBQ or garden chiminea, you'll be required to follow the same guidelines as Smoke Control Areas.

Approved for Smokeless Fuels

To be defra-approved wood burners must be able to burn approved smokeless fuels, without causing excessive emissions. These fuels are often referred to as 'Smokeless Coal' or 'Heat Logs' and have undergone stringent tests to ensure that they meet the requirements set by Defra for Smoke Control Areas. These fuels are a great alternative to real logs as they are less smoky and produce less smoke than seasoned logs.

Before the rules for smoke control areas were in place, residents could use any kind of fuel they wanted, which caused a lot of air pollution that resulted in health problems for those living in built-up areas. Since the rules came into place, Defra has worked to reduce the amount of pollution in these areas by regulating what is allowed to be used in stoves and fireplaces.

If you live in a smoke controlled area, then it is vital that your stove is Defra approved to ensure that you don't face hefty fines for breaking the rules. Even if you don't live in a smoke-controlled area, investing in a defra-exempt stove is a good idea. They are better for your chimney system as well as the environment.

Defra has approved wood burning stoves as well as multi-fuel stoves that have passed the UK Smoke Control Areas legislation. If you are buying a new stove, ensure that it has a Defra approved badge. This will guarantee that it meets all the necessary legislation.

There are two ways to become Defra approved. The first way to be Defra-approved is to have the stove and fuels tested. This is an extremely expensive procedure. Another option is to purchase a DEFRA Approved Traditional Stoves approved stove and make use of Defra approved fuels. It is more affordable to use a Defra approved stove, but you should still check with your local council first if you are not sure whether you live in a zone of smoke control.

In England, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is responsible for environmental protection and control, including air quality. It also represents the United Kingdom at international negotiations on agricultural, environmental and fisheries issues. The department was created in 2001 from the merger of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF), the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) and a part of the Home Office. The department is overseen by a cabinet minister, who is directly accountable to the Prime Minister.

They come in a variety of styles and sizes and can be inset or freestanding. They are the ideal stove for those who wish to reduce their heating costs and reduce their carbon footprint.

Some stoves will also have a SE (smoke-exempt) logo which means that they are legal to use in a smoke-controlled location when burning approved fuels.
