Repairs to uPVC Windows

uPVC windows are an excellent option for modern homes. They are long-lasting, durable and easy to maintain. They do not rot or rust like aluminum and timber.

It is crucial to wash and oil UPVC windows and doors regularly. This will save you from costly repairs and increase energy efficiency.

1. Broken Glass

If the glass in your window is damaged, it can cause a great deal of damage to your home, making it very dangerous and potentially fatal. It is essential to make sure that your windows are in good working order.

Single-pane windows are relatively simple to replace, and they typically fit into frames that were previously in use very easily. If you have double-paned windows which are joined by internal beading, window repairs it will be difficult to remove and replace the panes that were previously in use. In this situation you'll need to find some plastic spacers that help the new pane to fit perfectly into the window frame.

Wearing protective eyewear and thick gloves is a must if you plan to remove the glass by yourself. It is also a good idea to lay down a dropcloth before you start working on the glass to ensure that any shards will fall onto the cloth instead of onto the floor where they could be trampled on and cause further damage.

After the glass has been removed from the window, it's best to cover the gap with packaging tape or duct tape to block water and drafts from getting into the property until a professional can come out and repair the window. This also serves as an obstacle to stop criminals from getting into your home. If the distance between the window and the door repair is substantial, you may need to consider an alarm system that includes an opening. This will give you the best of both.

2. Sagging

Upvc is a long-lasting energy-efficient, cost-effective and economical alternative to timber sash windows. However, over time, they can suffer from a variety of issues like sagging. A window that isn't properly aligned can cause problems with light, draughts, and even security. If you notice that your uPVC window is beginning to sag it is important to act swiftly to prevent the problem from getting worse.

To repair a window that is sagging, you can try to reposition the hinges. First, you'll need to open the windows to access the frame. Then, remove both the top and bottom hinges with a screwdriver and adjust the hinges clockwise or counter-clockwise. Once you've repositioned the hinges, shut your window and verify the fitting. If you are happy with the fit of your window, you can tighten screws to hold them in place.

If you can't reposition the hinges, you may need to replace the seal. As time passes, rubber seals lose their elasticity and become dry which causes them to loosen. It is important to replace your seal as soon as you can in order to keep your uPVC window watertight and draughtproof.

uPVC handles may also loosen up. This is often caused by screws that have loosened over time, but it could be due to the handle mechanism wears out. It's relatively simple to fix a loose uPVC handle. First, you'll need to close the window and then perform an experiment fitting. The corner joints of the sash need to be aligned with the casing joint. If it doesn't you can use a screwdriver to loosen the handle. Then turn the mechanism into position.

3. Water Leaks

It is important to take action if wake up every morning to find mouldy walls and floors that are wet. The leaks of water from windows do not only lead to the destruction of your home's structure but also undermine your efforts to regulate the temperature inside your home. The most common cause for leaks in uPVC windows is that the sealant around the frame is damaged or missing.

This is a fairly simple fix that can be completed by any competent DIYer. Based on the severity of the issue the caulking used previously may require removal before a fresh layer can be put on. It is essential to keep in mind that when it is about uPVC window repairs you should avoid the temptation to "over-caulk' as this will only make the area harder to clean and could reduce the efficiency of your energy.

It is important to check that the drainage holes are clear of debris and that the sill pan is angled correctly so that it drains away from the window. In more severe instances, you may need to replace the window.

Other indicators of long-term water leakage include rotted sills and the appearance of black spots of mold on the wall near the window. This fungus thrives under damp conditions and can spread quickly throughout the house.

It is also important to keep in mind that if the leakage is coming from between the glass in your double glazed windows, it's more likely to be an issue with the glass seal rather than the frame or sliding. A uPVC specialist can fix this problem by replacing the glass seal. This will ensure the complete insulation of your windows.

4. Faulty Hinges

If your uPVC windows are stiff to open, or slack and blow open with a breeze It could be hinges at fault. They can be replaced by any competent DIYer and can be done within a few minutes.

Most households in the UK will have top-hung or side-hung uPVC windows that have hinges and, like all mechanical parts, they will wear out over time. The process of replacing a hinge on a window is essentially a simple process but it can be easier with someone else to help you hold the frame up.

It is also worth checking that the uPVC hinges are opening and closed in the correct direction. Look for the arrows that are on each hinge to determine which direction the window should be opened.

The problem with the hinges on windows could be caused by improperly opening the window in a certain way or due to inadequate installation at the factory. This can often be resolved by sending us a photo via our website and we will be pleased to offer you advice.

Regular lubrication of the hinges is essential. Applying a light engineering lubricant on the hinges is an ideal method of doing this. We recommend using the lubricant that doesn't contain solvents, like 3-in-1 Multi-Purpose oil. Regularly lubrication will help the window open and close more easily. It can also reduce the possibility of a window sticking and prevent corrosion. The ideal time to do this at least once a year. WD40 and other solvent based lubricants are not recommended as they could damage parts of your uPVC window.

5. Draughts

Draughts in Upvc windows can be caused by different factors. The hinges can also become disaligned as a result of wear, causing an opening between the frame and sash. They can be repaired by giving them thorough clean, however when they're beyond repair, it could be necessary to have them aligned or replaced. Secondly the interlock, this is located on the hinge side of the window and can also be misaligned, and again it may be possible to just give them a thorough clean, however in some cases it might be necessary to have these replaced.

The next most common reason for draughts is window seals. These are susceptible to being worn out or damaged over time and will allow air to escape through the gaps. This can be prevented by replacing them with high-quality weatherstripping. Replace the windows made of Upvc with low-emissivity glasses. This will help to regulate indoor temperatures and decrease the possibility of draughts.

The final method to cut down on the amount of draughts is to use a draught-excluder. These are usually fabric tubes filled with a filler which can be placed over your window sill. They will keep your home warm by blocking cold air.

The windows made of upvc can continue to provide excellent insulation and security to your home with regular maintenance and repairs. However, it is important to realize that all windows have a lifespan and they may reach an point at which it is more efficient to replace them than repair them. So, if you are having issues with your upvc windows, it's best to seek professional assistance as soon as you can.Glass-Replacement-150x150.jpg
