Defra Approved Multifuel Stoves

Multifuel stoves that have been approved by Defra are a great option for those living in areas with smoke control. They burn wood as well as authorised smokeless fuels with great efficiency and come in a wide variety of styles to meet all tastes.

The Defra Logo is usually displayed on the appliance, or in the specifications to indicate that it is suitable to create Smoke Control Areas. These appliances also come with a high energy rating with low emissions.

A large portion of the wood burning stoves we sell are Defra approved, meaning they have been tested to meet stricter standards for emissions when used in conjunction with wood and other approved fuels. This is due to the fact that these stoves are designed to use a range of different fuels and have been independently tested to ensure they don't create excessive smoke. A Defra-approved stove will also include features such as secondary and tertiary combustion which can maximize the amount of energy and minimise harmful gases.

Multifuel stoves that have been approved by Defra typically have an SE logo or DEFRA log burner regulations SE (which stands for smoke exempt) in their name. This signifies that the stove has been tested by an independent third party to show it is legal to use in a Smoke Control Area with logs and other approved solid fuels. The process of testing will comprise a series of tests to assess the stove's performance over different conditions and to confirm that the stove produces a minimum of 5 grams of particulates per kilogram when burning wood.

To meet this standard Defra approved stoves have a modified top air control which prevents the user from closing it all the way. If you close the top vent too far will reduce the oxygen supply to the fire and cause it to smoulder instead of burn. If you did this with a non-Defra approved stove, you'd be in violation of the law and could be charged for nuisance smoke offences.

To avoid smoke, buy wood that has been seasoned or kiln dried. The wood has been dried for many years and reduces the moisture content below 20 percent. A simple wood moisture meter can be used to determine the moisture content of your wood.

You can lessen the amount of nuisance smoke produced by a stove that is Defra-approved by using only dry, well-seasoned and well-seasoned logs that have been burned or kiln dried. You should never use damp, wet or unseasoned wood because it will produce a lot of nuisance smoke and could lead to an infringement from the local authority.

Smoke Control Area Approval

DEFRA approved stoves meet the strict air quality standards set by the government. They can use a range of fuels including wood, as well as some 'authorized' smokeless fuels in Smoke Control Areas (see DEFRA's indicative interactive tool here).

The smoke from burning untreated wood or other wet fuels in a stove that is not DEFRA approved or exempt will annoy your neighbours. It can also impact the local air quality if you live in a city. You could be fined or prosecuted for burning unapproved fuels in a Smoke Control Area or use an appliance that is not designed to work with smokeless fuels.

Defra approved stoves are made with secondary and tertiary systems of combustion which help burn fuel at lower temperatures and, consequently, produce less particulate matter (PM2.5). This is accomplished through the use of stainless steel liners and an exclusive convection system that forces air down the chimney - even after the fire has been put out. This allows stoves to burn wood more efficiently and create less emissions.

A Defra Approved Stove will also feature an adjustment on the top air vent, which prevents the stove from closing all the way. When you cut the air supply, the stove will stop burning properly, smoulder excessively and then start producing smoke. Defra approved appliances allow you to shut the vent, but not completely so that the flame can be burned at a lower heat and still comply with UK legislation.

When selecting a new stove that is Defra-approved it is essential to take into consideration the style and design, and whether it will fit into the style of your home. There are many designs and sizes to choose from that range from traditional fireplaces to inglenooks, to more modern designs which look great in open-plan living areas.

The majority of Defra approved stoves have an outlet for a 5kW flue, which means they can be used legally in Smoke Control Areas, which comprise the majority of UK cities and towns. This will also reduce your installation costs, since the stove will only require five" flue liner, instead of a more expensive 6" liner.
