How Does Machine Espresso Work?

Machine espresso uses precision pressure and incredible filter technology to produce the perfect cup of coffee. How exactly does it work?

Espresso is created by forcing hot water under high pressure through finely ground coffee. The process is similar to that of making drip coffee. However it is the pressure that makes the main difference.

The Head of the Group

The group head is the portafilter you put in when making espresso. It disperses the water into the portafilter, and regulates the pressure during the extraction. There are numerous kinds of group heads, each with its own advantages and drawbacks. Some are focused on temperature stability, others on pre-infusion capabilities, and still others are designed to control the lever. Some have a combination, such as the E61. This is a popular choice among baristas since it provides multiple benefits in a single package.

As you can see in the photo above, the group head has numerous notches that you can place your portafilter before twisting it manually to secure it. A rubber gasket is located within the notches to make a seal when you insert your portafilter. The notches on the head allow for a precise placement of the portafilter, which is necessary for an even extraction.

In addition to allowing you easily connect your portafilter, the group head is also responsible to ensure that the temperature remains even. It does this by cycling hot water through the brew container and around the portafilter to ensure that it is always at the correct temperature for extraction. This is important, as even a few degrees can make the difference between good and great espresso.

The Pump

The motorized pumps that are used in rotary espresso machines provide the nine atmospheric bar pressure required for espresso extraction. This differs from manual piston machines that rely on levers. The pressure builds by removing tap water from a reservoir, and pumping it through a heat exchanger prior being shot through the ground coffee in the group head.

Pumps tend to be less expensive than piston-driven machines, and they tend to last longer, although both types of machines may degrade with overuse and insufficient cleaning. They also create mechanical complexity and can lead to an expensive price for even the simplest models.

This can lead to over-extraction as the boiler that produces steam also heats the water to boil. In addition, these machines frequently have to restore their pressure between cups, which takes time and energy.

Many espresso machines use either a vibration or rotary pump. A vibration model utilizes a rotating disk to generate pressure, while a rotating model pushes hot water through the ground at a fast speed. Both types of machines can make a great espresso, but the rotary models are quieter and more durable than vibration pumps.

The Boiler

melitta-automatic-espresso-machine-serieThe boiler is the component which heats the water to the optimal temperature for extraction. The steam that is produced reaches the portafilter which holds the ground espresso and is then pumped down into the cup. The steam causes enough pressure to push the grounds of the coffee through. This creates a layer crema that is then poured over. This is one of the main characteristics of a great espresso.

There are three distinct types of espresso machines, each having different pumps and brew temperature. There are also different ways that the brew may be controlled as well as the size of the cup the machine can produce.

The first espresso machines were steam types. The first espresso machines were steam types. The coffee tasted bitter and burned. The modern espresso machine was invented by the Milanese makers Luigi Bezzerra & Desiderio Pavoni.

The most commonly used espresso maker is a semiautomatic machine that has an electric pump. These are what people imagine when they think of an espresso maker. Semi-automatic machines require you to grind and tamp the beans yourself while the pump controls the flow of water and pressure. This is an excellent compromise between human touch and the mechanised consistency.

The Filter

Espresso machines typically have filters that separate the grounds of coffee from hot water. The filter is also a vital component of the machine's temp control, as it prevents overheating.

It also helps with flavor, as a filter allows for a longer bloom time. This lets the beans release their nuances, and allows for a better extraction.

It is important to remember that even the most efficient filter could result in a poor cup of coffee. The quality of the beans and the extraction process are still very important.

It's here that the magic happens. This is what makes espresso taste so delicious. The grouphead, sometimes referred to as the brewhead, Machine espresso is where the portafilter (the container you place the coffee ground into) is placed when making espresso.

In an espresso machine that is driven by steam, hot water is heated in an airtight container to produce steam, which is then pushed through the grounds at a high pressure. These machines are cheaper and easier for the user to maintain than pumps-driven models. However, they are not as efficient in their ability to provide the perfect conditions for brewing, as they only operate at 1-1.5 bars of pressure. However, the perfect shot requires 9-10 bar.

In recent years, espresso machines powered by a compressed air pump have become increasingly popular. They use an air-compressor to push hot water through the ground and are much more mobile than electric steam-driven espresso machines.
