How to Replace a Saab 93 Key Fob
Every car should have a key fob that has an electronic remote that can lock and unlock your car. The batteries inside these devices could be faulty.
If you're thinking of buying a Saab 93 and don't have two keys, you can get one for about $400. This involves buying a new TWICE module from a dealer and installing it using an exclusive hand-held computer known as a Tech2.
Replacement Keys
Many used Saabs have one key. It is a good idea to invest in a spare as soon as you can since it's cheaper to do so than replace the entire vehicle in case you lose your only key. It is essential to rotate the keys to prevent wear and tear.
If you lose your primary key you will need to replace the CIM (Column Integration Module) or TWICE (Theft Warning Integrated Central Electronics) module along with a new key and special programming to convince the car that you are not trying to steal it. The replacement of these modules can cost upwards of $400, and the components are ordered via mail so it is not a one-time job for the majority of locksmiths or dealers.
The good news is that most modern Saab cars can have an additional key added to the system without having to replace the original computer inside the vehicle. The dealer will employ a handheld device called Tech-2 to program the second key into the vehicle. Certain independent garages are able to do this, but the procedure is more complicated and they will have to reprogram the EEPROM of your car's computer so it will accept the new key.
Replacement Key Fobs
Saab owners who lost their key last year or had it stolen require a new replacement as soon as they can. The steps needed to obtain an additional working Saab 9-3 key fob require the dealer's service department. This could cost hundreds of dollars, which includes the cost of a replacement key, a new TWICE module (theft warning integrated central electronics) and reprogramming to convince the car that the additional key is not a stolen one.
The process is more affordable should you have a spare. The new key must be paired with the original TWICE unit, and a used one is unlikely to work in this application, but genuine OEM replacement can typically be obtained from the dealer at a fraction of the cost.
It is easy to remove the case from a brand new saab keys Key Fob. Use a flathead tool to pry open the case and be sure to not harm the electronics inside. After you have removed the electronics and battery, you can replace the case with the shell of the previous key fob. The two pieces should be aligned and then gently press them together so that they click into their place. Once everything is in place, you can resynchronize the new fob. You should be aware that the process of adding a key is more complex than replacing the emergency key. The dealer will need to use a special tool called the Tech-2.
Replacement Ignition Keys
If your car's keys won't start when you turn it on or it won't start when you press the starter button, first ensure that the transmission is in Park. This will stop your car from moving if the lock on your transmission fails or if your manual transmission slams into gear.
In most instances, it's the electronic components on the key fob, which determine how the car recognizes the key once it's put into the ignition. The key made of steel is easy to duplicate but it's the electronic component of the key fob which makes the car recognize keys.
This is not something that a locksmith can do. It has to be done by a dealer or a specific handheld computer referred to as a Tech2. Locksmiths are not able to accomplish this. This is only possible through a dealer or a handheld computer called Tech2.
If you already have a working key fob then adding another isn't going to cost more than $200. The other expense is the actual production of the key made of metal, should you require it. Many dealers can do this, however it could take some time to get the key and the car programmed.
