There has been a massive increase in people seeking treatment for mental health issues and the NHS has responded by offering services. This includes:

The Long Term Plan reaffirmed its commitment to invest more in mental health services more quickly than overall NHS budget. This will include specialist work in suicide prevention.

Need help?

One of four people will suffer from mental illness at one time in their lives. The good news is that there are plenty of different options to seek assistance and the majority of us recover with time. However, it is important to know what assistance is available, and who can offer it.

You can get help from your doctor or your local health center or a mental health service in your area. These teams are comprised of nurses, occupational and psychotherapists and speech therapists. They collaborate with people who use their services. Depending on the type of help you need you might be provided with individual or group therapy.

You will be asked to fill out a form by your GP so they can refer you to a mental health team in the community. They will also speak to you about the kind of help you need. Then, you will be viewed by someone from a mental health team, which may include a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker. In some cases your evaluation and treatment will be conducted by a specialist in clinical nursing. You can contact the NHS 111 helpline for assistance if you're in an emergency. If you are already receiving mental health support It is recommended to contact your primary team first, unless it is outside of hours, or on a weekend or bank holiday.

The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health included plans to establish more multidisciplinary, community-based, place-based mental health teams that have links to primary care networks. These teams will increase the quality of the mental health services delivered to people experiencing a crisis, and offer support to them in their own homes and communities instead of in hospitals.

The plan also aims to make crisis services more accessible by decreasing waiting times and opening more beds. It also proposes the introduction of mental health transport vehicles, and ensure that all ambulances have a mental health liaison nurse in their control rooms to improve the way that people who are having a mental health crisis are helped in times of crisis.

Treatment options

The NHS offers a variety of treatment options to treat mental health conditions. Less severe disorders are often treated by GPs and more serious disorders require a specialist team. These teams are located in primary and community healthcare facilities and psychiatric hospitals. There are also safe spaces where you can seek assistance when you're in a crisis.

Talking therapies are among the most common types of treatment for depression and anxiety. These programs, previously referred to as IAPT (Interactive Assessment and Psychotherapy) have seen their referral numbers increase every year since they were launched in 2008. The NHS Long Term Plan commits to expanding these programs so that 1.9 million people will be able to access them by 2023/2024.

Psychiatric medicines are also a vital element of treatment. They can help alleviate symptoms by altering how the brain's chemicals function. They can also help reduce the effects of other treatments. Your doctor will suggest the right medication for you.

There are a variety of talking therapies, including group therapy and individual therapy. Some of these treatments are delivered in-person, while others are available via remote access. Some patients prefer to receive treatment in person, but that is a personal preference. Mind is one of the organizations that offer support groups and classes. Their website has a lot of reliable information, but you must be aware that there is lots of inaccurate or misleading information on the internet about mental health issues.

While the NHS is improving its mental health services, it still struggles to cope with demand. In the UK there are 54 mental trusts. The majority of them receive funding from the clinical commissioning group. They are usually located in a specific area however, they are also able to be contracted to provide national services.

The main issue is the lack of resources to meet the growing demand. There are also concerns about the quality of care and the shortage of psychiatrists and nurses. The NHS is working to improve the quality of care by providing more training and developing new ways of working. It also introduces safer and more effective methods to treat people who are in crisis. This includes mobile crisis teams and secure spaces.

We are here to help you

Since the NHS was launched 70 years ago, there have been positive changes for those with mental health issues. The options for treatment have grown and social barriers have been taken down. However, there is much to do.

People who are experiencing mental illness need to receive the assistance they require quickly and easily. The NHS is striving to improve the quality of services to ensure that those in need can get assistance. In 2020/21, we will ensure that all acute hospitals offer a mental health liaison service that is available in A&E and on wards for inpatients and that 70% of these will be in compliance with the core 24 standard by 2023/24. We will then strive to achieve 100 percent coverage.

We will also extend services for people who need them in the community, which includes therapy for talking, which will give hundreds of thousands of patients with severe or common mental health conditions the support they need. We will continue to work on our national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies program (IAPT) to ensure that more people with mental health problems are seen faster by therapists who are qualified.

The NHS provides free, confidential helplines to anyone struggling with a mental health issue. Samaritans Mind and Rethink are some of the helplines available. These helplines are operated by trained volunteers. They provide an environment where you can talk in a safe manner or provide guidance and information on how to get a mental health assessment to manage your mental health issues.

Additionally there are a variety of local organizations that offer support and guidance for those suffering from mental health issues. These can include self-help guides, coping strategies and activities to try. Many of these organisations offer face-toface support groups to those who would prefer it.

The University's Open Door Team offers a drop-in counseling service for students who are struggling or stressed. Nightline is a student counseling service that offers Private mental health assessment uk listening, support and information from knowledgeable volunteers. Charities such as Mind and Rethink are a excellent source of information and can provide support in various forms, including online and through local groups. They also provide various classes and activities, from mindfulness to art classes which can be helpful for those living with mental health problems.

Referring someone to you

Mental health services are under pressure and GPs are forced to make difficult decisions about which specialist services they should refer their patients to. The GP will take a patient's medical history into consideration and then refer them to a service they think can assist. They can send a referral to an NHS trust, or to an independent provider.

A mental health professional will then review the referral and decide whether it's appropriate or [empty] not. If the specialist isn't satisfied with the referral, they'll contact the GP and explain why. They could also ask the GP to alter the referral or ask for more details.

The referral to a local Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) can be made through the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). The system lets doctors and other healthcare professionals to send patients to either a preliminary clinical assessment for mental health or directly to an appointment. However not all CMHTs provide both options, and the system can't be used for every type of mental health referral.

A GP may refer a patient to a mental health specialist in the community service (CMT). They are typically run by a large local healthcare organisation or hospital. CMTs are a great option for those who have to visit a psychologist or psychiatrist, but do not require inpatient treatment. They also offer an early intervention service, where a psychiatrist will work with a counselor to help someone overcome a crisis or improve their quality of life.

CMTs face the challenge of making sure that all referrals are made within a reasonable amount of time. One of the issues is that many referrals are deemed urgent, even though they may not be. This can lead people who aren't in crisis to be overwhelmed and suffer delays.

To combat this problem, some CMHTs have tried to establish more uniform guidelines for what constitutes a referral urgent. This is being achieved by using a standardised referral proforma that requires a referrer determine if the case is urgent. The proforma has a box that the referrer can tick to indicate if the referral is urgent.
