Buying a Pram Newborn

Prams and pushchairs are the multi-functional, multi-purpose companions of caregivers and parents. They are the co-pilots of your child's new journey.

A pram newborn is designed for infants and newborns. It comes with a the most solid, sturdy carrycot with soft and safe walls.

A pram is equipped with a bassinet, however it can be converted into a stroller when the baby is ready.

Safety

The newborns of today are extremely fragile and should be kept as safe as is possible. Buying a stroller or pram equipped with safety features will ensure that your baby is safe and secure during travel. A pram or stroller must include a break that is working, a 5-point harness (2 shoulder straps; 2 waist straps; and the crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person driving it. Be sure that the model you are considering meets these standards before you buy.

Find a stroller that allows your newborn to ride in the recommended lie-flat position. This position is supportive for your baby and prevents a dangerous spinal curve which could lead to problems with their spine. It also reduces the chance of SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome) or asphyxiation by ensuring that the airways are free. Most prams can be used from the moment of the time of birth. They come with an adjustable seat that reclines to lay flat for infants, and can be converted to a folding pushchair for older children.

The suspension of the pram will determine how smooth it rides. A pram that has a lot of suspension is likely to be more expensive but it could be worth paying for this feature if you plan to use your pram daily for a couple of years or more.

Always read the directions and carefully read the warning labels on your stroller or pram. When not in use, place your stroller in a safe area away from dangers such as bicycles, traffic or other people. You should also remove any bags or other objects from the handles, as they could cause your baby to get caught or choke.

A stroller or pram should never be left unattended with a child in it even if they are asleep. They could get squirming into the pram and get stuck, or be pushed away and cause injuries. Hanging bags, or other items from the handles is not an ideal idea as they can fall and strike your child on the head.

Comfort

Having the option of lie flat seating is an absolute essential for infants as it promotes better back and lung development. A lot of prams come with cocoons or carrycots that creates a cosy nest-like atmosphere for your newborn and is able to be removed from the frame. Some seats, like the bucket-style seat on the egg2, don't recline completely flat, but they provide an enjoyable ride for your child.

Some prams include a separate bassinet or seat for infants. This allows you to easily switch between the sleeping and sitting positions depending on the needs of your baby. It is often referred to as a "travel system" and is the initial setup you should test out with your baby.

Choose a stroller with two shoulder straps (ideally with padding) and a functional five-point safety harness that fits your bub's body securely. Make sure there aren't any gaps or places where fingers could get caught. Also, ensure that the buckles are simple for older children to operate. It's also worth considering whether you'd prefer a pram with a parent-facing feature or not - it's ideal to keep an eye on your child and helping them feel secure by the familiar sight of their parents.

This is a fantastic method of keeping eye contact with your baby and stay in contact, particularly when they're sleeping. If you're looking for a travel system, make sure to check the frame's compatibility with your chosen car capsule and this will prevent the need to wake them up when changing between car, pram and back again.

Convenience

When buying a pram newborn it is essential to consider the needs of your baby's transportation. Some prams come with a carrycot or bassinet, which allow your baby to lay flat (essential for their spinal development and breathing) while others come with a seat that can recline into a flat position. It is also a good idea to look at what other accessories are included in the pram, such as an infant changing bag and a footmuff that are essential to keep your baby warm during the colder winter months.

Some prams and strollers can be converted into travel systems. You can connect a car pod to a frame with adaptors so that you can move your child from the car to the pushchair without waking them up. These are useful for those who have a hectic lifestyle or don't have a big enough boot for prams, however it's worth keeping in mind that your baby will need to be old enough and able to sit on their own before you can switch them from car capsule to pram.

Another feature you may want to keep an eye on is the ability to raise and lower the infant's seat from a low to high setting, which helps maintain eye contact with them and keeps them close to you. This is something our parent tester found very useful for her 10-month old boy! One example is the Graco Near2Me, which lets your child 'glide towards you at the press of the button.

Also, make sure you are able to fold it up easily and ensure that the safety harness you use is safe and fits comfortably (five-point instead of three-point) and can be adjusted as your child grows. You should also be able to store shopping and changing bags in the basket underneath (although remember that putting on too much weight could cause it to tip over). If you're not sure which to choose, test out some different models at your local store.
