A car won't start unless the ignition switch transmits an electrical signal to the starter motor. Over time, normal wear and tear can cause the switch to fail.

1. Make sure you check the Switch
A malfunctioning switch is among the most common ignition issues. It controls the moment relays are activated, and deactivated, acting as bridge. Because it doesn't transmit the full power of devices like the starter, it's a lighter component that is less likely to fail. The switch can still be damaged or corroded.
One sign of a damaged switch is a difficulty turning the key. This can be due to many factors, including not inserting the correct key correctly or wearing down the mechanism over time. It's not unusual for people to mix their keys up with keys from someone else's. This could cause mechanical damage.
Before calling a locksmith, you might want to try a few things. First, you'll want to ensure that the battery is fully charged and there are no other electrical issues in the system. You should also check the voltage of every component to ensure they are supplying enough power. Once you've done these steps, it's now time to start troubleshooting.
The ignition switch is easy to replace. It's connected to the ignition cylinder, a round module that holds everything together. To replace it, you'll require a flathead screwdriver, and something that is long enough to push the pin inside. You can employ anything from a paintbrush to a kabob stick, but avoid anything that is brittle, as it can cause damage to the hole.
When you're ready to do the work, you'll need to take off any trim pieces that cover the area around the ignition switch. After you've removed the trim pieces take off any screws that hold the switch in position. Then, gently remove it. Depending on the model, you may have to cut off any cables that connect to it. You can learn how to do this in the instruction manual for your vehicle.
It's best to get the ignition switch replaced by a professional when it's not working. It's not easy to replace the ignition switch, without disabling the steering column. This could result in the unintentional deployment of airbags if you do it incorrectly. Therefore, it's often best to have your locksmith take care of this for you.
2. Check the Wire
The car may not start if you cannot turn the key or it will not start. This could be due to any variety of components in the ignition system. Understanding how the ignition system works will help you identify problems and make the appropriate repairs.
The ignition switch is a low voltage multi-pole electrical switch that is operated by a key. It has four positions: off run, accessory, and "lock." If the switch is in the lock position (which usually has a red indicator) the ignition circuit is live and it's impossible to start the engine.
You can use a voltage meter to quickly test the ignition switch or ignition coil. If the ignition switch is running, the voltmeter should show approximately 12.6, If the voltage is lower than that it indicates that there is an open circuit within the system. This could be at the battery, the solenoid or even the ignition coil itself.
Connect the electrical connector to the ignition switch so that no other components can interfere with your test. Then, set the voltmeter to the continuity or resistance mode and put one lead on one of the ignition switch's terminals. The other lead should be connected to the positive terminal on the battery. If the voltmeter is "open" or does not register any voltage, you should replace the switch.
Use a new ignition key and a high-quality ignition cylinder when replacing the switch to ensure your vehicle runs and starts properly. Also, when replacing the ignition switch, you must be careful not to hit the ignition cylinder pins with your tools, or they'll get stuck and your engine won't start. In certain vehicles, you'll need remove the steering column and the gear selector to get access to the ignition cylinder. This can be difficult and is not recommended unless you have an owner's guideline that says it's safe to do so. Otherwise severe damage to the steering column and shifting mechanism is possible.
3. Check the Cylinder
If you've tried the battery, the wiring, and the ignition switch but still can't get your car started It could be time to check the cylinder. It's the component that holds your key and is mechanically connected to the steering wheel lock so a would-be thief can't drive the car without keys.
You may observe that your key will not rotate if the cylinder is worn out. The pins in the cylinder may become stuck when they adapt to the shape of your key. This can cause your car to not start. Or, the cylinder might be loose and a tap using a small tack hammer can aid in releasing it. Be careful not to mix the springs, and ensure that the key is properly installed.
Another indication that your cylinder is failing is when you have to move the key around and try different positions before it gets started. This is a bad sign, and it must be addressed immediately, since it will only worsen over time.
To check the cylinder, you'll have to disconnect your battery, and then remove the cover from your steering wheel until you're able to access the ignition module. The old ignition switch should be simple to take off, as will the cylinder made of steel. If you don't have a spare ignition switch lying around, it's likely possible to take your original ignition switch and cylinder to a locksmith to reuse them as long as they're in good condition. After replacing the ignition switch and cylinder, ensure that you connect the wiring to secure it, then reattach the covers and panels you removed.
4. Check the Spark Plugs
The spark plug is your ignition system's final link. The engine cannot run when the spark plug is broken. It can be that your car ignition barrel replacement will not start at all or it will run poorly. In either case, the reason is likely to be one of the things that prevent or impair electricity from jumping across the spark plug gap, which ignites your engine's air and fuel mixture.
Be sure to wear protective tools and gloves before working with your spark plugs. Spark plugs can get very hot and can cause serious injuries if touched with bare hands.
If a spark plug goes bad, you might notice that the tip of the electrode's central portion has some light brown or gray residue on it. The electrode could also be covered with a dark layer. These deposits, also known as corrosion, can prevent high-voltage electricity from crossing the spark plug gap and igniting your engine.
If you suspect that your spark plugs may be the culprit you could test them by remove them from the tube that is inside the ignition coil. You can do this by disconnecting the coil from the plug wire and following the appropriate procedure for your car to remove components that cover the spark plugs. After removing the plugs, place them on a surface that is grounded, and begin the engine. If they're good you should see a strong blue spark crossing the gap between the tip of the central electrode.
If you don't see any spark, you have found the problem. The next step is to work back through the ignition system chain, testing each part until you find out what's stopping the spark plugs from doing their job. All systems will wear out and eventually break, and this is particularly relevant to ignition systems. However, regular maintenance can to slow down the process and prevent a major problem at the worst moment.
