Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes can add a classic look to your home. They are also sturdy and last for a long time when they are maintained properly. Remove the sash, and then remove the hardware including the parting beads (Photo 2) and the cords or chains which hold it in place. Heat gun with nozzle shield and a medium setting can soften any hardened putty. Remove the old sash, and keep it in a bag labeled.

Sash Weights

Sash weights can be changed to enhance the efficiency of your window sash, and also reduce energy costs. Sash weights are hefty lead or iron cylinders enclosed in a concealed cavity and linked to the moveable the sash with a rope. Unless you've bought an upgrade kit to replace the old counterbalance system it is recommended to keep the original balancing weights in place.
