Window Repair; Www.Youngwooapt.Co.Kr, sashes must be checked regularly for mold, mildew, and damage. You can reduce the cost of repairs in the future by catching these issues early before they get out of hand.

The sash is the interior frame that is vertically moved up or down in windows that open. This article will teach you how to perform several simple sash repair.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes can add a classic look to your home. They are also sturdy and last for a long time when they are maintained properly. They may, however, become damaged or degraded with time, due to exposure and normal wear. Fortunately, sash repair specialists can bring your windows back to their original condition and keep them looking great for a longer period of time than replacement windows.

The first step to sash window repairs is addressing weather stripping, which is found on both the sash as well as the frame. It can cause drafts if it's worn out or loose. Begin by identifying the window's brand and the date of manufacture for the glass (etched on the glass's corners, or the aluminum spacers between panes). Remove the sash and mark its width and height so that you can purchase replacement weather stripping that matches.

Next, remove the sash and set it on a table so you can access all four sides. If your sash has been double-hung, you must remove the weights using their ropes that should have fallen into the pocket in the jamb lining. Once you've removed the sash using a utility knife, you can use it to cut away the old weather stripping at the corners, and then take it off by hand or using a putty knife.

After the sash has been cleared and clean, you can put in the parting stops. These are long pieces wood that divide the two sashes. Pam prefers to use standard 1/2-inch by 3/4-inch window trim from the lumberyard. But, you can substitute with a scrap piece of wood.

After removing the stopper for the parting and cutting it to length, apply a thin coat of glazing compound on the bottom of the sash. Smooth it out using your putty knife, then let it dry for at least a day. When it's completely dried, apply a top coat of acrylic latex paint. This coating will protect the putty and give your sash a new look.

Sash Hardware

The hardware that holds window sashes is prone to wearing out from the wear and tear of use and the result could be a door or window that isn't able to open or close easily. The good thing is that fixing and replacing this hardware is usually quite simple and inexpensive. If a sash isn't easy to operate, try spraying some lubrication into the jamb channel and then open it to see if it fixes the problem. If the issue persists it's most likely the sash balance. You'll need to remove the window sash to access the hardware.

Ideally, window sashes must move open and shut with minimal effort however, this can be an issue when the weights are worn or if the sash meeting rail isn't properly glazed. This issue can be caused by a number of reasons, such as insufficient maintenance or the wrong weight rating for a particular window sash.

If the hinge arms of a window begin to slide, this could cause the sash to slide and eventually land on the frame in the corner opposite the hinge arm (Photo 1). To fix the problem ensure that the sash is centered in the frame opening and then take it off. If the sash is screwed to the hinge arm, you'll have to loosen the hinge arm and replace it (Photo 2). Install the new sash next (Photo 3).

Old windows, especially those in older homes, may be difficult to close and open due to hinges that are sagging and a general inefficiency. In many cases it is a matter of making a few minor adjustments that can help these windows function smoothly and save homeowners money on energy bills.

It is crucial to have the tools needed before you start. Mark the hinge channel location on the frame (Photo 1) with pencil. This will help you get the channel back on position correctly after you've completed. Remove the sash, and then remove the hardware including the parting beads (Photo 2) and the cords or chains which hold it in place. Heat gun with nozzle shield and a medium setting can soften any hardened putty. Remove the old sash, and keep it in a bag labeled.

Sash Weights

Sash weights can be changed to enhance the efficiency of your window sash, and also reduce energy costs. Sash weights are hefty lead or iron cylinders enclosed in a concealed cavity and linked to the moveable the sash with a rope. They function as counterbalances and allow you to open and shut the upvc window repair without the need for mechanical or electrical devices. The sash weights are often ignored or discarded by homeowners and turned into scrap when they fail. Consequently you may have to find replacements.

A sash weight that has fallen out of the cavity is difficult to recover, so you will want to find a new one that fits properly. You will also require a new piece of string, a length of sashcord and a few sashpulleys to secure the weights you are replacing to the cord.

Mortise and Tenon joints are used to join older wood windows. The wood pegs that hold the parts together can be removed by a pin punch and hammer. Most of them have large diameters on one side and a smaller diameter on the other, so it is essential to remove the smaller-diameter ones first. Later sashes utilized glue instead of pins. They can be cut with a knife and mallets.

Once the sash is freed and removed, you can take off the sash stop and gain access to the weight pocket. Usually, this is done through a hole near the bottom of each jamb. The hole is then covered with an access panel of wood that can be ripped off so that you can see the inner workings of the frame.

Once you have the sash stopped and the access panel removed, you'll be able to take off the old sash weight and replace it with the new. Weigh the sash first because the weights you've got may not be the right size. Once the new weight is installed you can tie a string around it and thread it through the sash pulley. Then nail the string to the boxed frame, leaving a few inches of string protruding from the head to allow for future adjustments.

Sash Cords

In the majority of double-hung windows, a chain or cord is attached to the weights. This keeps the sashes of the jamb balanced. Over time, these cords may become damaged and make it difficult to raise the windows. A new sash cord will restore the ability to move the sash up and down and will keep it in its position when it is opened.

The first step in replacing sash cords is to locate and remove the access panels in the jambs. They are usually fixed or screwed in and must be removed or moved. You may be able to use a hammer and chisel to prise them off, but it's always better to lay down dust sheets prior to starting any work.

After you have removed the access panel, you can begin to work on the sash. Make the small parting beads (also called "tie rails") out of their grooves with a chisel or flat bar. These are often wedged in or nailed in, but they can be prised free and it's worth your time here. If the sash remains in place, remove the mortise and tenon joints with the help of a hammer and pin or screwdriver, then remove the wood pegs that are on each component. The sash should move freely now, but it may need some lubrication to feel less stiff.

With the sash in an open position With the sash in an open position, measure the sash chain or cord to extend from the pulley at the top of the jamb to the sash slot in the bottom. Cut the chain or cord and attach it as described in the step 6 above. You can employ a hammer, nail or screws, but nails are less likely to cause damage.

Unless you've bought an upgrade kit to replace the old counterbalance system it is recommended to keep the original balancing weights in place. They're not expensive and simple to install if you purchase them at architectural salvage stores. Depending on the size of your window, one or two sashweights could be needed to keep the sash in an open position.
