It is essential to replace a damaged or cracked window as quickly as possible. This can lead to an energy loss or moisture build-up between the two panes.

Replacement-Doors-300x200.jpgThe average homeowner can replace a window pane for only a fraction of the cost of replacing a complete window. To replace a window pane you'll need to remove the window that is in use clean the frame, then apply the new glue.

Remove the old Pane

The first step to replace the window pane is to remove the old pane from the window. It is essential to wear safety equipment such as gloves and a face mask. If you can, it is best to work on the ground and use a ladder that can be secured securely to prevent falling. After the old window is removed, you can start working on the frame of the window replacement panes. It is recommended to lightly sand down the area. Apply a layer of linseed to the frame of the wood to allow the glazing compound to remain flexible.

When you are ready to start the actual project Make sure that your work area is clear of any debris and that you have all the tools you'll need. You will require an utility knife to scrape away any old putty that remains on the glass or in the frame of the window. It could require some effort and time, but this is necessary to ensure the highest quality finished product.

Once you've removed all the old putty you will have a clean opening for your new pane. To ensure that the new window will fit take a measurement of the opening and subtract 1/8" from the width and length. You can also take a piece of the old window pane to the hardware store to match the type of glass and the thickness.

Window panes can make your home more efficient by reducing heat losses, glare and noise. Replacing just one window pane is a simple job.

After replacing the broken pane, you will need to seal and caulk the edges of the new window to keep it in position. This will not only give your window a stunning appearance, but also make it energy efficient and waterproof. Installing a window film can help you save money on your energy bills by cutting down on the amount of heat that is lost through your windows.

Remove the Putty

The glazing putty that is used to hold panes of glass in their frames can be very difficult to remove. It is often difficult to remove since it hardens and dries. To avoid this, it is best to take out the old putty prior to installing the new one. It's not an easy task to get rid of window putty but with patience and effort it is possible. It is recommended that you wear gloves made of leather and eye protection while working with glass because it can be very dangerous.

To begin removing the putty, first take out any nails or spriggs that are holding the window in place. These nails were used to hold the window in place prior to when double or upvc glazing was available. These nails are typically located in the corners and can be removed with the use of a screwdriver, or a hacksaw if visible. If any are hidden, you'll need to make use of a small chisel or putty chisel in order to break them off from the frame.

Once the nail is removed you will need to use mineral spirits to wash away any remaining pieces of old putty. This product is available at most hardware stores. It should be used in a space that is well ventilated. It is also recommended to apply the oil in short bursts to avoid over heating the wood and paint because this could cause it to crack or explode.

Another option is to employ the heat gun to soften the putty. This will work better on putty that has been painted over or hardened and can be extremely effective. Make sure to move around when using the heat gun since being stationary for too long could cause burning of the wood and result in cracked glass.

Steel wool can also be used to take away the putty. However this method is not as efficient and may cause a mess. This should be used only as a last resort, and is not recommended for homes with children.

The removal of the metal Glazing Points

A hurled baseball or errant tree branch can cause a lot of damage on a windowpane. While many people think that a broken windowpane will require a full replacement of the frame and the sash it is possible to restore the view and cut down on energy bills by replacing only the glass.

The first step in replacing window glass is to take off the metal points which hold the previous pane in place. With a putty knife scrape off as much softened glaze as is possible to expose the points. There should be at least four of them, evenly spaced on each side of the frame. Once you can see the metal using needle-nose pliers, hold each one in your hands and pull straight out. Be careful not to pry too hard. If the point is inflexible or breaks, you may end up damaging the frame and will need to replace it.

After the putty and the metal glazing points have been removed, you can start to prepare the frame to accommodate the new pane. Make sure that the grooves are clean and free from cracks and dents. A heat gun can be useful for this, but remember to be careful and use a low temperature to prevent the wood from warping or causing damage.

If the glass is double-paned you can take a piece of the previous pane to check that the new one fits correctly. Apply a thin layer of silicone sealant on the inside frame rabbet, then press the glass into it. Then, trim any excess sealant using the blade of a razor and apply a coat of exterior paint to complete the job.

If you only have one pane of glass to install, skip this step and go straight to the next. If the new glass is a different thickness from the original, purchase an appropriate-sized piece of glass from a local glass cutter. Before installing the new pane place a glazier's pushpoint in every corner of the frame rabbet (two on each side for a small window, and more for larger windows). This will add extra support to the pane, and also help keep it from getting smashed in time.

Installing the New Pane

Window panes aren't just there for aesthetics, they also improve efficiency in energy use, shield the home from rain and insects, and increase security. When they fail or are damaged, it's crucial to replace them as soon as you can. Many homeowners are unaware of the best way to replace a window. It's actually quite easy to change a window. All you need is some supplies and simple steps.

Begin by removing the old windowpane. Be careful not to cut yourself. Make sure you keep a towel nearby to clean any remaining glass. Save the shards in case of require a new window. Once the old glazing is removed and a tape measure is used to find the dimensions of the frame's opening. Note these down and subtract 1/8 inch from each side to get the new glass size. This will result in a tight fitting glass and allow for the natural expansion and contraction. Take the measurements to your local hardware or home improvement store and have them cut a piece of new glass for you. If you can, bring a shard from the window that is already in use to match the thickness and style.

After the new pane is in place After it is in place, apply a small amount of caulk made from latex around the edges to create an airtight seal between the frame and glass. Then, place glazier's pointing into the holes in the wood frame around the edge of the glass. There will be two points per side for eight points total.

You can also install any wood molding that is left around the frame's edges. Make sure to wash the molding and putty well before reinstalling them, so they won't interfere with your new pane.

It is tempting to put off replacing a damaged glass pane, but this can result in further damage to the glass and surrounding sash. It also increases the chances that you'll have to replace the entire window at some point. Replacing a damaged window pane is a fairly simple task that is achievable by anyone with basic tools.
