Replacing Double Glazed Windows

No matter if you're looking for uPVC sash windows or aluminium casements, there's an extensive variety of options to match the style of your property and your energy efficiency requirements. Modern double glazing comes with a myriad of benefits, including noise reduction as well as UV protection. It also provides security through multipoint locking mechanisms.

But, what do you do when your double glazing shows signs of wear and tear?

1. Excessive Condensation

In the winter, when windows and doors are closed, condensation may form inside the glass panes if the air temperature is warmer than the window's surface. This is a natural occurrence that can be prevented by opening windows, improving ventilation more generally, running a dehumidifier and keeping moisture levels low with extractor fans. However, if condensation forms regularly on the interior of your windows this is a sign that the double glazing has failed and it needs replacing as soon as possible.

Condensation on the outside of the windows is normal and is a sign that your double glazing system is working exactly as it is supposed to. The condensation that forms outside your windows in mornings is due to the temperature of the cold glass dropping below the dewpoint of surrounding air. This causes the water vapour in the air to be drawn into the cold window where it condenses. This is made more difficult by plants that produce excess moisture in your house and by high levels of humidity.

If condensation appears in your double glazing, it is an even more serious issue. It's a sign that your seal between the glass panes is broken. This allows warm air from your home to enter while the insulating gas escapes. This could cause serious damage to the double glazing and should it not be addressed it will have a significant impact on your energy bills.

Installing replacement double glazing immediately you detect this kind of condensation can drastically decrease the chance that the issue gets worse, saving your money in the long run. Replacement of your double glazing could also be a great opportunity to upgrade to A-rated energy-efficient windows that will make your home more comfortable and reducing costs for energy.

2. Wear and tear signs

Double glazing provides a number of advantages, including noise insulation and savings on energy bills. But, like every other item, double glazed windows have a lifespan and it's crucial to be aware of indicators that they're reaching the limit of their utility.

One of the most obvious signs is visible condensation that is visible. It is caused by the temperature difference between the two glass panes and if you observe this it's a good indicator that the window seal has failed and it's time to get the windows replaced.

If the window seal fails the cold air can get into your home. This is not just a waste of electricity, but also causes damp and mould. Both are costly to repair. Additionally, both damp and mould can be harmful to health as they can create allergens and irritants which can affect the health of your family.

Draughts are a sign of sealants that have begun to wear. This allows outside noise into your home, which can be a distraction. This can also affect the work you want to do at home or just how relaxing your home can be.

In the end, if windows do not open or close easily, it's a sign that they need to be replaced. It could be a security issue if the windows replacement glass don't open in a crisis situation like a house fire. This is something you should not ignore. A qualified window fitter can examine the condition of your current windows and give suggestions on the best method of action.

3. Draughts

If you've noticed drafts passing through your windows, it's usually a sign that seals in your double glazing have burst. Sealant is used to hold the glass panes and provide insulation. However, it can be damaged by weather changes or simply aging. In the result, cold air comes into your home, and warm air is emitted which can cause draughts and lower energy efficiency.

Another reason why draughts may be causing the problem is that the window's frame is distorted and not sealing correctly. Moisture can also get trapped within the window frame, creating the draughts to increase as time passes. This is a serious issue and it is important to have your double glazing replaced as soon as you can to avoid any further problems.

A misted double-glazed window is a sign that the sealed unit has let out or the gas has escaped between the panes. This is a serious problem and it will need replacing immediately to stop water from entering your home, preventing heat from escaping and decreasing the efficiency of your insulation. If your windows are covered by warranty, you can ask the company to replace them.

Chips and cracks in your double-glazed Replacements Windows aren't always a sign that they need replacing however, they can have a negative impact on the overall performance. They can also reduce the amount of light that flows through, causing drafts. Additionally, if there are deep cracks or chips on your windows, it is unlikely that they will be able to withstand the weight of a replacement unit which will require the creation of a new window frame.

4. Increased Utility Bills

Energy costs are a major cost for a household and that's why it's important to keep them as low as is possible. Energy bills that are high not only consume a significant portion of your budget, they also put unnecessary stress on the environment, something we all want to try and do less of. One of the biggest causes of skyrocketing energy bills is leaking windows, which allow heat to escape from your home, but also create drafts that force you to use more energy to heat your property. Installing double glazing using energy efficient windows can reduce your energy bills and will save you money year after year.

If you see condensation appearing between the panes of your double glazing it's a clear indication that they need to be replaced. This is an indication of a faulty seal, which means that air is leaking out of the house. The insulation may not be functioning properly.

If your double glazing is misting, it's time to replace the glass. This is a clear indication that the seal is broken and water is getting trapped between the panes of glass. Double glazing will prevent the entry of moisture into your home and stop heat from leaving and keep your home warm.

You can save energy and enhance the appearance of your home and save heat by replacing your double-glazed windows with energy efficient windows. It will also increase the value of your home which will make it more appealing to buyers in the event that you decide to sell. You can expect to save PS115 in heating costs per year with double glazing that is classified as B. This will pay for your windows.

5. Faulty Windows

If you have a double glazed window that has become foggy, misty or hazy, this is an early sign that the seal has failed. It's also a sign that the glass replacement on windows has lost its insulation value and could lead to draughts and condensation. In addition, the gap around the edges of your windows can allow water to enter and damage your wall or plaster. This can also be a serious fire risk.

It is important to have your double glazing repaired immediately if the glass has become misty. This can be a security issue. It could also cost you more in energy bills due to the loss in insulation.

The air humidity between your IGU's (insulated glass units) can cause misted windows. The gas in the glass - typically argon or krypton - assists in insulating the glass, and if the seal fails, this gas escapes, causing the window to fog up.

Check your warranty to determine whether it covers premature seal failure. In some instances manufacturers offer a prorated warranty, scaled according to the age of your windows, and this might be a viable option.
