Clean Burn Technology
A DEFRA-approved stove is a multifuel or wood-burning stove that has passed a rigorous examination designed by the UK Government Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. This test makes sure that the stove is able to burn approved smokeless fuels, such as logs or briquettes, in Smoke Controlled Areas. This type of stove isn't just better for the environment and the environment, but it's more beneficial for your neighbors too because it reduces nuisance smoke.
These DEFRA stoves have a a specialised combustion system that lets them sleep or slumber longer than other stoves. They will burn any smokeless fuels that are approved in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining the required heat output for your home. They do this by limiting the oxygen supply into the firebox, forcing the fuel to burn at a low level until it is eliminated.
Defra stoves are often referred to as SE stoves or smoke-free stoves. They also will have an emblem or label with the DEFRA Logo. You might see them marked as 'Ecodesign compliant 2022' to indicate they will meet the new Ecodesign emission limits when they go into effect next year.
There are a variety of factors to take into account when buying a DEFRA. Included in this are the model of stove, the types of fuel that can be burned, and the amount of heat it's capable of producing. There are also some additional features you may want to think about, DEFRA Approved Traditional Stoves such as a simple remote control system or an air-washing system.
When selecting a DEFRA woodburning or multi-fuel stove, it's crucial to consider the style of decor that you would like to have in your home since there is a range of styles available. There are many traditional models to choose from if you want to fit stoves into an existing fireplace or inglenook. But, there are also contemporary and modern models that look stunning without a mantel or surround. It is also important to consider the fuel that you're planning to use, as there are DEFRA exempt wood burners as well as many specifically Defra approved stoves that allow for the usage of smokeless fuels that are approved by the government.
Smoke Controlled Areas
Smoke Control Areas are defined in most UK cities and towns. If you live in one of these areas you'll need a DEFRA-exempt stove or multifuel stove. These stoves are designed to adhere with the Clean Air Act regulations, and have been tested for smokeless combustion.
The main feature of the DEFRA approved stove is that they have been designed with Clean Burn technology, which is how they are able to be smoke free. This is accomplished by delivering a continuous supply of oxygen into the combustion chamber until all the fuel has been consumed. This means that the fire cannot be shut off as in a traditional stove and therefore it will continue to burn at a low level until the fuel is completely consumed and the flue gases are exhausted.
This allows you to use the stove legally in a Smoke-Control Area, with authorized fuels. These include wood and manufactured smokeless fuels such as anthracite and smokeless briquettes and firelogs. This is different to stoves that are not Defra approved, and can only be used in a Smoke Control Area if they have been equipped with a specific Smoke Control Kit.
It is possible to fit the Smoke Control Kit on a wood burning stove that is not exempt from DEFRA However, this is not recommended. You could put your family at risk of exposure to toxic gases and toxins which can cause lung damage. Additionally, the use of a non-DEFRA exempt stove within a Smoke Control Area can result in massive fines.
Stovax has a wide selection of multi-fuel and wood burning fireplaces, stoves, and fires that are all DEFRA exempt and can be used in areas with smoke control. It is important to remember that all new stoves must be installed by a HETAS certified installer to ensure they are fitted safely and comply with the requirements of current building regulations. A DEFRA-approved kitchen appliance that can be used in Smoke Control Zones helps reduce emissions, which has led to a reduction in the amount of sulphur dioxide that is in the air. Ecodesign regulation across the EU will be in effect in 2022. It will establish emissions limits and minimum efficiencies.
Smokeless Fuels
There are many things to consider when choosing an appliance that is smokeless fuels. The stove must be approved by DEFRA to be used in areas with smoke control. This means that the appliance has undergone rigorous tests to ensure that emissions from particulates are minimized. There are also stoves that use smokeless fuels which burn more efficiently than traditional coal. This is better for the environment and your neighbors.
Smokeless fuels are usually anthracite based and come in the form of Briquettes. They are made to be more environmentally friendly than traditional coal, and they can last 40 percent longer. Smokeless fuels also produce more heat and release less carbon dioxide than traditional coal.
They are more expensive, but have many advantages for you and your family. They are much easier to ignite and do not produce more soot or Ash. This means that your stove's grill and the glass screen won't require cleaning as frequently. They also produce a more lively flame and do not emit as much nuisance smoke.
It is crucial to remember that if you reside in a smoke control zone, you are only allowed to burn authorised fuels and wood in your stove. You may be penalized if you burn fuels that are not approved. If you use a woodburner that is not DEFRA-approved, you may produce smoke that could cause a disturbance to your neighbors.
This is why it's essential to purchase a DEFRA exempt stove that allows you to use non-smokeless fuels in your home. The stoves that fall into this category have gone through rigorous tests to ensure that they meet the DEFRA regulations and that they do not produce nuisance smoke. This is achieved by ensuring that the stoves are equipped with the most modern combustion technology that stop part-burned combustibles from being released into the air.
Warranty
DEFRA stoves can be multi-fuel or wood burning stoves that have been approved for use in Smoke Control Areas. They have undergone rigorous testing to ensure they are clean and efficient burning, with low emissions, and optimal performance. They also come in a variety of styles to fit your style and home.
DEFRA Approved Traditional Stoves approved stoves are called SE Stoves in the market, Smoke Exempt Stoves or Smoke Control Stoves that are approved for use in the Area. These terms all refer to the same type of stove that has been tested to meet strict UK laws that limit the use of smoking for a certain amount of time.
A Defra Approved stove can only be used to burn dry wood and approved smokeless fuels, such as blue flame or anthracite oval anthracite. If you attempt to burn anything other than approved smokeless fuels, it will create a nuisance smoke that could cause respiratory problems for those who suffer from asthma. It is the obligation of the installer and the consumer to ensure that the appliance is appropriate for their particular property using the Defra calculator, ensuring all chimney parts are correct, ensuring minimum distances to combustibles have been adhered to and the hearth size is suitable for the stove that is being installed.
Stoves installed incorrectly may cause damage, leakage, and void warranty. The installation must be done by a certified HETAS engineer to ensure that the stove is safe to use and is properly installed. Consumable items such as glass, door and glass rope seals, paint finish internal lining plates, baffles and firebricks aren't covered under the warranty. These are considered as customer replaceable parts and are available from us if needed. Damage to the stove caused by high moisture or salty air environments is not covered by the warranty.
Purchasing a DEFRA stove is an investment into your home, not only for the warmth it will provide you with but also for the security of knowing that you are doing what you can to help safeguard the environment and your neighbors too. You can rest assured that the DEFRA-approved wood burning or multi-fuel stove will last for many years.
