Speedy wideouts are among the biggest benefit of moving into the slot as they typically are more likely to be open in the field when their route isn't obstructed by a cornerback or linebacker. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list that benefits from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable receiver on intermediate and short routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the low end of the list. They're more effective on shorter and intermediate routes than in deep areas. Jeudy is a great choice for a sleeper this year as the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are expected to be involved on more downfield targets. Hamler will be a natural on short-to-mid-long and intermediate routes, as it was where he excelled when playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be a great replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The amount of snaps a receiver takes in the slot could be a good indicator for their ability to run deep routes. It is not always a true reflection of a receiver’s skill set because some receivers are better in the slot and can't play deeper.

For instance, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery leads the league in targets per game (4.8) but is placed sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is because the majority of his targets come from outside, and it's a challenge to get a first down in a wide-open, deep and wide-open route.

On the other hand, some receivers excel in playing inside and aren't able to do much on the outer. Robby Anderson, for instance was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his routes in the slot, compared to just 26% on boundaries routes. That's a huge difference, and indicates how much more efficient he is when aligned in the slot.

Additionally it is worth noting that the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). However, he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more efficient when they line up inside. They can be targeted further down the field and are often swarmed by one-on-one coverage. This is why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper on the top five spots of our list.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also in this group. McDuffie is the leader in the NFL in forced fumbles having seven, and Moore has the highest tackle-stop efficiency (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by using his slot to play nickel and dime packages and then moving him to the outside while playing base defense. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been a huge benefit when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While top NFL receivers such as Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are also just as good. Wide receivers who have high slot grades have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the perimeter. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent in their target distribution when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers.

This is why it's fascinating to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 since he plays slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of the sets. In fact the slot receiver is running a higher number of slot routes than most players listed on this chart. This is an excellent way to generate matchup advantages for your team and helps explain why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season.

Lamb also plays at the X-position and makes huge plays outside. Lamb isn't as explosive as some of the other players in this list, but he is still an elite wide receiver that is a good fit in the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a different player who puts up big numbers with targets of all kinds, is a different example. He has a very high slot receiver rating and is among the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws, but he's also an excellent contested-catch threat.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays to date. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him a valuable part of his team's defensive line. He's struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is a result of playing with poor linebackers and safeties who aren't able to match Hilton's size and speed. He also has a great ability to run routes.
