How to Do a Broken Car Key Repair

You're headed to work in rush, and put your car keys into the ignition. Then you try to turn it around, and it breaks inside the lock!

Lexus.jpgThere are a few options you can attempt to solve the issue before calling a locksmith. Here are some quick solutions. Super Glue.

1. Contact an expert locksmith

One of the most devastating things that can happen to a car key fob repair service owner is a damaged key in a lock. This situation is even more difficult if it happens while the driver is hurrying to get somewhere or to drop off an infant. In this case it is essential to act quickly and attempt to get the key out of the way.

It is recommended to contact an expert locksmith for this job, because he or she will be able to use the correct tools to take out the broken key and not cause damage to the lock. A lot of people look around their car for something small and rigid like a paperclip or toothpick, but this isn't likely to work as it's too heavy to enter the lock.

The best solution is to look for a pair of tweezers, as these are quite thin and can easily get into the key hole inside the lock. They should also be rigid enough to grasp the broken part of the key and remove it. If you don't have tweezers, it might be worth searching for a set of key extractors which are typically available in auto parts stores. They are narrow and flat with small hooks that can be put into the key hole and then grip on the broken piece of the key.

Another option is to find a magnetic key hook that is able to be affixed to the metal inside the lock and then pull it out. This is not always the best option since it can get caught under the lock and cause further damage. In such a situation, it is best to call an expert locksmith.

Some people attempt to stick the two pieces of their snapped car key with superglue as it will help them get it out of the lock. This can be dangerous as the metal pieces could snag and break later. It is also important not to turn the key as this can cause further damage to the lock or the ignition cylinder. It is best to contact an expert locksmith who will be ready to take the damaged key and then make an immediate replacement.

2. Drill through a hole

Even with a spare key you may not be able to access your vehicle if the key breaks inside the lock. In these cases, drilling out the lock is the best option.

First, you will want to make sure that the key hole is set to take a basic tumbler car key. If it isn't then you won't be able to drill out the pins without damaging the door and possibly damaging the lock mechanism.

It is important to keep in mind that you'll be drilling through an outer plastic layer as well as an inner metal layer. A small drill bit is enough to cut through these layers, but you need to be sure to not go any deeper than that. If you drill too deeply it may damage the internal wiring harness or cause the drill bit to get stuck inside the hole.

It is also recommended to wear a face mask and protective gear when working using drills. This will stop dust and dirt from getting into your respiratory system.

It is also a good idea, in the event that the key fragment is broken and is sticking out of the lock, to have pliers and tweezers handy. If there is enough of the key protruding to be grasped by tweezers, or pliers, this should suffice to pull it out of the lock. If not, you'll need to use a tool like this to wedge it in the lock, and then turn it toward the key to grab it and pull it out.

3. Drill a nail

If you smash your car key in half, it can leave you stranded. Luckily, there are a few methods to fix it without paying for locksmith. The first option is to utilize a screw or nail. These can be found in your home or at a local hardware store. However, it is best to search for a nail that is as thin and as long as you can. You can then insert it into the hole, and then apply epoxy glue to join the two pieces together. It is also important to ensure that the nail's back is level. This will allow it to fit into the slot cut in the key. This will prevent it from moving and potentially breaking again in the future.

4. Super Glue

A lot of car owners tend to make use of DIY hacks such as using super glue to repair a broken car key, but this is not a safe option to make. You could end up damaging the lock and having to spend more money on finding a replacement at the dealership or a locksmith.

First, take a look at the keys that have been damaged and make sure they are identical in terms of size. This step is essential to ensure that all glued pieces are aligned correctly and that the key will fit into the lock after they've been joined. After that, use a piece of sandpaper with fine-grit or a metal file to smooth out the edges of the broken pieces of the key. This will strengthen the bond of glue and decrease the likelihood of a future loose key.

After finishing the edges, apply only a small amount (about a pea-sized amount) of super glue to one end. Be careful not to apply too much, as this can cause the key to become too thick and may be difficult to fit into the lock. After aligning the two pieces of the broken key then press them together. After a few moments the glue will begin to set and join the key fragments.

Another household item that can be used to to remove a damaged car key is a bobby or paperclip pin that can be made into a pick-like device and placed inside the lock. This technique is particularly useful when the damage is located inside or close to the keyway or the ignition hole.

Another important thing to note is that if the damaged car key is equipped with electronic components, it will require the cutting of a new key from the dealer or a professional locksmith. The key must be reprogrammed with a different code, and the chip inside the key must be changed. If, however, only the shell or metal portion of the key is damaged the key, it will usually only require an entirely new key cut, and doesn't require any replacement or reprogramming of electronic components.
