Counter Strike New Revealed

Valve finally announced Counter Strike New after weeks of rumors. It's an update to CS:GO that will bring the game onto the Source 2 engine and make some major visual changes.

It also introduces responsive smoke grenades and sub-tick updates for servers. It has got a lot of armchair gamers going crazy but it looks like an incredible upgrade for regular players.

Smokes

Counter Strike New has a huge update that will change the way smokes are used in the game. These changes, known as responsive smokes, are a game changer. Smokes will now expand to fill spaces naturally and move around objects on the map. They will also react to the lighting of the game, making them look better and more realistic. Smokes will also be able interact with gameplay events. This will provide new tactical opportunities. For instance, bullets could force smoke to briefly make clear sightlines, while Hex grenade explosions will disperse smoke obstruction.

The biggest change to smokes is that they'll be a more dynamic element of the game. Smokes in earlier versions were a fixed-shaped object with a limited ability to move and blocking. Rather than an update of 64 ticks every millisecond, the CS: GO will now be able use sub-ticks (or as Valve calls them, "micro-ticks") to communicate with the server. Each of these tiny increments of time will be recorded by the client and sent to the server, which will return the updated game state to players. The servers will now know the exact moment you fired your shot or jumped, peeked, and other inputs.

The video doesn't cover everything. However it does state that each piece sent by the client has a date and time and that the server will gather all information in chronological order from all players prior to sending it back. According to the video it is believed that a CS: GO server will be able to send up to twice as much information as a 64-tick server.

This means that even when the tick rate of the game increased to 128 Hz, it will still be able handle your commands immediately. The micro-tick updates also reduce input lag by ensuring that the server responds to your commands without glitches or delays.

This is clearly only the beginning of the technical enhancements Valve is making to the game. The company is implementing dynamic smoke and particle systems to improve the way smoke interacts with the surrounding and is updating all maps with high-resolution lighting, textures and Case Chroma models. Source 2 tools and features will be used to update all CS cosmetics and weapons.

Maps

The coming update for Counter Strike New will bring new maps to the game alongside some old favorites that are getting facelifts. The updates are currently being tested in a limited beta. The first set includes an upgrade and touchstone map that will not see major changes to gameplay, while other maps have been revamped or rebuilt using the brand new Source 2 Tools.

Overpass is one of the maps that has been modified to make use of the new engine's unified lighting system.
