The slot is the ideal option for wideouts that are fast, as they can open up more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list who benefits from slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable player on intermediate and short routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other possession-based receivers are at the lowest of the list. They're more effective on shorter and intermediate routes than in deep areas. Jeudy will be the Rams main slot payouts receiver this season is a sleeper selection. Courtland Cooper and Amari Sutton are likely to play a bigger role in downfield targets. Hamler will be a natural on short-to-mid-long and intermediate routes, because it was where he excelled when playing for the Bills in 2021. Some receivers are better at playing inside, while others struggle to do so on the outside. Robby Anderson, for example was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He logged 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to just 26% on boundary routes. That's a huge improvement and shows how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned in the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, is inside most of his passes and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However, he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers are usually more effective when lined up inside, as they can get targeted way down the field, and often are in one-on-one coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper in the top five on our list.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks also belong to this group. McDuffie leads the NFL in forced fumbles, with seven, and Moore has the best tackle-stop efficiency (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo maximized McDuffie's skills by using him in the slot for nickel and dime packs and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. Additionally, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been an enormous advantage when playing in the slot themes.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers like Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are just as good. As a whole, wide receivers with high slot receiving grades score touchdowns around the same rate as players who play on the perimeter. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent in their targets when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers rather than other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends.

This is why it's fascinating to see a player like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022, since he plays slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. He's actually running more routes in the slot than a lot of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.

He also plays at the X-position, and can make big plays outside. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this list however, he's highly skilled and is an excellent fit for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a different player who can put up big numbers with targets of both kinds, is a further example. He's among the top players in the game at taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb catcher who is contested.

Another player on this list who's a true slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has been positioned in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him a key player in the defensive line. He has struggled to stop passes from the outside and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This has been a result of playing alongside subpar linebackers and safeties that can't match up with Hilton's size and speed, as well as his route-running abilities.
