The Department of Veterans Affairs has systematically discriminated against Black veterans by refusing disability compensation claims at a significantly higher rate than white veterans, as per a lawsuit filed on Monday. Conley Monk is a 74-year-old Marine Corps veteran from the Vietnam War who filed the lawsuit. He claims that VA has denied his disability claims at a much greater rate than white veterans over the past three decades, according to the agency's records obtained by Monk and the Yale Law School Veterans Legal Services Clinic.
Monk, who is an ex-psychiatric nurse and retired, says that the discrimination by the VA has caused him and other black veterans to suffer in ways that have affected their health, homes work, education and employment. Monk wants the VA to compensate him for benefits he has been deprived of and to amend its policies on race discharge status, discharge status, and denial rates.

The data revealed that Black Veterans were statistically less prone to be granted an application for disability than white veterans from 2001 to 2020. In addition, the average denial rate was 6.3% higher for black veterans than it was for white veterans.

He claims that the VA has a debt for the past denials of disability benefits.
