A good robot vacuum cleaner can make a huge difference in controlling allergens such as pet hair and dust. But not all models are created to be the same.
There are many options available depending on whether you are looking for an animal-friendly vacuum or a robot to work with your other cleaner.
1. Eufy RoboVac G30 Edge
The G30 Edge is the newest model in Eufy's budget line of robot vacuum cleaners. It's a glossy black model with blue and rose-gold accents that looks like the design of a smartphone. This model is easier to use than previous models and has features like BoostIQ which automatically increases suction power for better cleaning on all surfaces. Smart navigation is used to avoid the repetition of the same area which is an issue that is common with bounce-navigation.
It is effective in getting rid of pet hair, crumbs, and dust on hard floors but falls behind the best automatic vacuum for pet hair models when it comes to removing flour from carpet. In our tests, it failed to pick up 74% of the powder on hard floors and 26% on carpet.
The G30 Edge is unique in its ability to map out your home using a digital map. This allows it to remember which rooms it has cleaned before and prevents it from returning to those rooms, a major frustration with other robots that rely on the use of old-fashioned magnetic tape to define no-go zones.
The G30 Edge has other conveniences that include a "Find My Robot" mode that blasts out a loud tune until it's found and a directional pad that lets you to manually move the robot. It also has a built-in auto return function that can send it back to its charging base when the battery is depleted, an important safety feature.
2. Neato Botvac D-Shape
The Neato Botvac D-Shape is a remarkably capable robot with an impressive list of intelligent features. It is able to clean floors efficiently and climb up carpets with high piles easily. The app also offers advanced features such as boundary lines, remote control access while the robot is in operation, and a variety of other options.
This model is the most recent in the long-running line of robots by Neato. It is unique because it has a "D shape when seen from above. The design offers a number of advantages, including better corner cleaning and a larger bin of dust than the majority of models. The D-shape design allows the robot to reach under furniture more easily than models that have a circular design.
When it is first time to begin a cleaning process when cleaning, the D-Shape will stop briefly to make use of infrared lasers that spin to scan and assess the area. Then, it will begin to clean in a grid, moving systematically from one area to another until the floor is completely covered. This method of cleaning is more efficient and thorough than the random approach taken by some competitors.
The d-shape design also allows the D-Shape to have a large dust bin, with 700ml, compared to 400- 600ml for similarly priced robots. This extra capacity will help you save time and effort by making it easier to empty the dust bin. The D-Shape also features a flat front side that helps it get around obstacles like chairs and tables. In our tests, we found that the D-Shape sat under a stool with four legs, and also underneath an electrical cord that was exposed. However, it was able get out of the way each time.
3. Roomba I3+ EV
The Roomba EVO i3+ is a fantastic option for pet owners. It's great on hard floors, and it does a great job of cleaning up debris like pet hair, rice, cereal and other small particles. It struggles a little bit on carpet, but is better than most robots in this price range. The Roomba EVO is also very good at moving between different kinds of flooring. It doesn't stall on transitions as older models. The dual multi-surface brushes flex and adapt to various flooring types. They also resist tangling pet hair.
The i3+ EVO has weaker obstacle avoidance than some of the other robots that we evaluated. It repeatedly encountered objects such as pet toys, handbags, and shoes before retracing its course. It also had trouble dealing with salt that was coarse, which it blew over and around rather than picking up.
The i3+ EVO comes with a variety of amazing features that make it worth the extra cost over other Roomba models, such as the ability to empty the dustbin automatically and advanced control via the app. You can schedule cleanings, create specific routines and set no-go zones for areas you do not want the robot access. The smart scheduling system can suggest additional cleanings during peak allergy times depending on your routine. The system for navigation is not reliable and sometimes vacuums in erratic patterns such as diagonals or zigzags instead of parallel to walls.
4. Shark AI Self-Empty, XL
This smart robot is able to map your home in detail and more accurately than you. It also has dual brushes that can be adjusted to different flooring types and prevent tangling, which makes it the ideal option for households with pets. You can control the robot via the app, or turn on it hands-free with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The dock, which is dubbed Omni, automates tasks like filling and cleaning the robot's water tank and debris bin, emptying it as well as charging and drying mop pads.
It's a great price. The Shark AI Self-Empty XL is less expensive than many other robots on our list and yet comes with advanced features, such as mapping and an automatic self-emptying trash bin which holds a decent amount of debris. We tried it out in a home with a mix of bare carpet and low-pile flooring and found it to maneuver and clean exceptionally well, even getting into corners. The vacuum also does a decent job of removing pet hair on carpeting, though it doesn't have the same power as some of our top picks.
However, the Roborock S4 Max is better constructed, takes less time to recharge than the Shark and comes with more automated and scheduling options as well as support for no-go zones. We'd still recommend the Shark when you're looking to buy something less expensive or in the event that you prefer using your mobile phone to monitor and control your device rather than a remote that is specifically designed for it.
5. Bissell SpinWave Dry & Wet
This robot does mopping and vacuuming. The two-tank system used by this robot allows it to mop or vacuum at the touch of the button. In our tests, it was able to easily switch between surfaces and was excellent at cleaning pet fur from carpets and hardwood floors. It also comes with an edge-sweeping brush that can remove pet hair from baseboards and walls, and the ability to schedule your schedule.
This robot is another solid choice if you're looking for an affordable model that comes with additional features. It was able to maneuver around obstacles in our testing and can be operated via an app or your voice. It even has scheduled cleaning and has a large dustbin to collect messes before they become full. It could take up to 166 mins to complete its task, but this is still more efficient than other robots we have test.
The front-facing camera on this robot lets you to track the cleanliness of your home's cleanliness through a map with an app. It's particularly helpful if you're trying to find an item that you're looking for or your children spill glitter from your decorations on your flooring. You can avoid a lot frustration by finding the lost item immediately. The lithium batteries that do not fade can last for as long as 130 minutes on a single charge.
6. Roomba 694
The Roomba 694 appears classy and offers a thorough cleaning. It is very adept at moving its self and can move under furniture without getting stuck. It's also great for rugs and carpets with a low pile. It can get stuck on rug tassels, and it's difficult to maneuver small spaces such as corners. It also has trouble collecting pet hair from all surfaces.
Despite the 694's limited feature set however, it still performs better than most of the competition. It managed to grab an excellent score on our cereal-carpet test. It also passed our cat-litter test with only a few stray pieces of litter left behind. It's less effective on hardwood floors though. The side brush scatters large cereal pieces that stick to the floor instead of sweeping. It also had a hard to collect table salt from a clean floor, with a lot of grains skidding across the floor and beyond its reach.
It allows voice control via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant via an external device (sold separately). It is able to learn about your cleaning habits and creates custom schedules. Cliff Detect and an edge-sweeping brush ensure it gets into difficult-to-access corners. Dirt Detect sensors alert it to heavily soiled areas. It comes with a dust bin that automatically emptys, and it has a battery life of around 60 minutes. The pricier iRobot J7 comes with a more sophisticated set of features and performs better on all surfaces. It is also more durable, has a bigger dustbin, can charge faster and is able to navigate obstacles like electrical cords better.
