ADD and Treatment

ADD and treatment is typically associated with problems at school, home or work. The psychiatric disorder may be difficult for doctors to diagnose and treat.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most popular name used for this psychiatric disorder. Mental health professionals employ brain imaging using SPECT to determine ADHD.

The symptoms of typical ADD include being easily distracted, forgetful, and disorganized. The use of stimulants and antidepressants can ease the symptoms.

Limbic ADD

The most common form of ADD, also known as classic ADD or hyperactive-impulsive ADD, is characterized by inattention, a lack of organizational skills, difficulty staying on task, and trouble with memory. Brain scans show that people suffering from this type of ADD are able to maintain normal activity while concentrating and at rest in the prefrontal cortex however, they have less activity in their cerebellum as well as the basal ganglia. These areas help produce dopamine, which is an important neurotransmitter that is responsible for motivation, calmness and concentration. This type has a limited attention span, is easily distracted by sounds or other stimuli and has a hard time shifting attention. They are unable to fall asleep and frequently awake in the middle of the night with anxiety. They are often overwhelmed by their emotions and have short tempers, and are quickly frustrated with tasks and easily angered.

People suffering from Ring of Fire ADD have all the core symptoms of classic ADD, but they also have difficulty shifting their attention from thought to thought and from task to task. They are sensitive to noise, light, and touch. They talk too quickly and are highly impulsive. They are susceptible to low energy, moodiness, and anger. They also tend to get stuck in negative thoughts and guilt feelings.

It is possible to mix limbic ADD with depression. However, it is different because it increases activity in the limbic part of the brain at the moment of rest and while concentrating. It can be treated by supplements such as L tryptophan (5-HTP), saffron and inositol that increase alertness, mood and mental clarity. Amino acid GABA is also helpful to calm neural activity, inhibiting nerve cells from firing irregularly or in excess.

It is crucial to differentiate between ADD and mood disorders like Bipolar Disorder, which also can trigger irritability, anger, and poor self-esteem. The main difference between ADD with Limbic Symptoms and Bipolar Disorder is that ADD has a more consistent level of irritability over time. Bipolar Disorder tends to suffer from symptoms that occur in waves.

Overfocused ADD

Overfocused ADD patients tend to get caught up in negative thoughts and behaviors that result in excessive worry. This is due to rigid behaviors similar to people suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). They can become emotionally upset when asked to switch their attention between different activities, and they may react with a resentful or argumentative behavior.

These people tend to have an inability to keep their cool and their irritability stems from a chronic negative or low-grade sadness "glass half-empty syndrome" and often feeling of despair and desperation. They might also have difficulty learning, struggle with memory issues, or experience severe anger and aggression.

People who have hyper-focused ADD may be rigid when it comes changing tasks and become engrossed in their job or pastime. They are prone to missing deadlines at work, and forgetting appointments at home, and they might not finish tasks or school assignments. They can also be very stubborn and resentful if they are reprimanded or chastised by their teachers or parents.

Children with overfocused ADD can be angry and stubborn, and can throw temper tantrums if their interests are not accepted. They may be obsessed with particular toys, activities, and video games. They also have difficulty expressing their emotions, and can be extremely sensitive to rejection or criticism.

This form of ADD can be difficult to identify, particularly for children. These children often don't understand that their problem is due to their inability to shift their focus from one thing to another. This is the reason it's crucial to seek help from an expert, since children with this type of behavior are more likely to be misdiagnosed by family physicians and even psychologists. This type of ADD is usually treated using diet changes, supplements, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. This kind of ADD is extremely difficult to treat even with stimulant medication due to the fact that it can cause hyperactivity. Functional neuroimaging is a method to differentiate between the seven different types of ADD. It is particularly helpful in diagnosing overfocused ADD.

Anxious ADD

Many people suffering from ADD suffer from high levels of anxiety. Comorbidity, which is having more than one disorder simultaneously, is common and affects as much as 50% of people suffering from ADD/ADHD. Stress and anxiety can be similar to the symptoms of ADD/ADHD, and misdiagnosis can lead to improper treatment and even more frustration.

Anxious ADD can lead to problems at work, school and social settings. This kind of ADD could cause low performance and feelings of inadequacy. People suffering from anxious ADD tend to avoid difficult tasks and events because they believe they're not capable of completing the task.

They also fear being judged or critiqued. Because of this, they tend to hide their issues from others. People with anxiety can become so anxious and stressed that they suffer from panic attacks. These panic attacks can be serious and life-threatening. They trigger a pounding of the heart, sweating and difficulty breathing. Unlike Classic ADD, those with Anxious ADD have increased activity in their basal ganglia as well as the amygdala. These organs operate on an instinctual basis, and are able to prioritize safety. This causes a shutdown of PFC and makes it difficult for these individuals focus.

When a person has add adult treatment/ADHD and anxiety their symptoms are more difficult to treat. This is due to the treatment programs for ADD/ADHD which are designed to stimulate brain activity, can increase anxiety among people with anxiety-related ADD.

Psychiatrists at Amen Clinics use functional neuroimaging techniques, such as SPECT scanning, to determine where in the brain there are low and/or high levels of activity. This helps them differentiate between the seven types of brain and determine the best method of treatment.

To diagnose ADD/ADHD, a psychiatrist takes a thorough medical history and performs physical examination. The doctor may also inquire about the patient's mood and behavior in order to assess the patient's overall performance. Sometimes, medications are prescribed to treat ADHD and ADD. However, in most cases patients also need other therapies, telearchaeology.org including cognitive behavior therapy and diet, exercise sleep strategies, and desensitization. This can help improve their ability to manage their emotions and improve their overall performance.

Temporal Lobe ADD

This type of ADD affects the brain's temporal lobe, which is responsible for memory and mood. People suffering from this kind of ADD struggle to process and store information, experience mood instability, and have severe anger or aggression issues. They might also experience sensory issues, such as experiencing like they're in a dream, seeing shadows or objects change form or hearing sounds that others don't hear. They are irritable, sensitive and easily overstimulated.

The symptoms of this kind of ADD are similar to those in Classic ADD, including short attention spans disorganization, difficulty in following instructions or staying on task and procrastinating. This type of ADD is not associated with excessive impulsivity or hyperactivity. This type of ADD is more common in women. People suffering from this type of ADD might have low levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine which can cause feelings of depression and poor self-regulation. Some of the symptoms include difficulty sleeping and feelings of anxiety or irritability.

In this case, qEEG brain mapping scans of the brain show that individuals with over-focused ADD have normal activity in their anterior cingulate region, the brain's "gear shifter," but they are experiencing difficulty shifting gears. They are unable to shift from one thought or task to the next, and they become stuck in negative thinking patterns and behaviors.

psychology-today-logo.pngThis is a form of ADD which means that people are extremely motivated and hardworking but they also tend to get distracted by mundane or insignificant tasks. They can lose track and be embarrassed or exhausted due to their actions. They may be struggling in relationships due to their tendency to be impulsive and reactive. They also have trouble multitasking and working with others. In certain situations, they could be depressed or anxious. They could be susceptible to panic attacks and hallucinations. The use of medication is not advised for this kind of ADD, because it doesn't treat the root of the symptoms.
