What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep welcome kits are an excellent way to fix your equipment until you get to the trailhead and have it repaired professionally. The trick is to know what to do when you need it.

Dentures that are repaired at home over a long period of time can cause the loss of bone, irritation and tumors.

Tools

It is important to be equipped with the right tools on hand when you are out in the field. This kit was developed with this in mind, and includes all the essential hand tools needed for repairing items on the field. The tools are made of metal and feature very little plastic, which means they can withstand use. The kit includes a canvas zippered pouch for coalcracker tools, a reamer, twist awls, cutting shears and Gimlets (5MM). It also includes a bottle of coalcracker oil, a guidebook and a wooden spool a reamer, and the twisted an awl.

Repair Patches

Think about adding adhesive patches to your kit if there are a few holes in your gear. These patches made of heavy-duty materials have high-performance glue applied on a tough polyurethane backing that lets a tear that is triggered by pressure to recover. The patches are available in clear or colored versions and offer durability against punctures as well as sunlight, moisture and extreme temperatures.

If your kit doesn't include any of the items listed above, you may want to consider adding a waterproof Aquaseal wader sealant. This water-tight adhesive will bond to fabrics and metals to create a permanent fix. This is ideal for repairs to drysuits, and can be used in the field. Let the sealant cure for up to 12 hours prior applying the repaired gear.

The most essential field fabric repair kit for nylon tents that have silicone impregnated, packs, rainwear and more. This kit includes one Clean Tape patch and a sil-nylon repair swatch along with a 1/4-ounce tube of Gore-Tex Sil-Fix repair adhesive & sealant and brush. Apply patch to clean, flat surface. Allow a minimum 1/2 inch overlap. Release the paper and rub the adhesive side down with moderate finger pressure.

Surface preparation is crucial for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone or oils on boots and shoes can cause adhesion issues. Make use of Seam Grip with Cotol 240 Cure Accelerator for the best results.

Adhesive Patches

If you're on the trail and aren't able to do complete vulcanising repairs, these adhesive patches will get you back in the saddle with no hassle. Apply the self-adhesive patch, then apply it by rolling it around.

Clean up the area that has been punctured, then use the tube-scuffer or sandpaper to roughen the surface, which helps glue stick. Then spread a thin layer of glue on the patch and cover an area at least as big as the patch. Wait a few minutes for the glue to dry before pressing the patch into place and holding it securely in the desired position.
