Mental Health Services on the NHS

The NHS has responded to the increase in mental health problems by offering services. This includes:

Psychiatrylogo-IamPsychiatry.pngThe Long Term Plan has made the commitment to increase the investment in mental health services faster than the NHS budget in general. This will include specialized work in suicide prevention.

Need help?

One in four people will suffer from mental illness at some point during their lives. The good news is that there are many different ways to seek help and most of us recover over time. It is crucial to know what help is available and who can provide it.

You can seek assistance from your GP, your local health center or a mental health team within your local area. These teams comprise of nurses, occupational and psychotherapists and speech therapists. They work with the people who use their services. You can get individual or group therapy, based on the kind of help you require.

You will be asked to fill out a form by your doctor so that they can refer you to a mental health professional in the community. They will also ask you to specify what kind of support you need. You will then be examined by a member of a mental illness Assessment health team that could include a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker. In some cases the assessment and treatment will be conducted by a specialist in clinical nursing. If you're in crisis, call the NHS 111 helpline for immediate assistance. If you already receive mental health support, it is best to contact your regular team first, unless it's out of office hours, on a weekend, or a bank holiday.

The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health outlined plans to create more multidisciplinary, community-based, place-based mental health teams with links to primary care networks. These will help to improve the quality of the care delivered to people who are suffering from an illness of mental health and offer assistance in their homes and communities instead of in hospitals.

The plan also aimed at help make crisis services more accessible by reducing waiting times and allowing more beds. It also proposed to introduce mental health transport vehicles and make sure that every ambulance has an official who is a mental health liaison in their control rooms to ensure people suffering from a mental health crisis are supported in emergency situations.

Treatment options

The NHS provides a wide range of treatment options for mental health conditions. Disorders that are less severe are usually treated by GPs however more serious conditions require a specialist team. These teams work across community and primary mental health services as well as psychiatric hospitals. You can also seek help in a secure environment should you be in a state of crisis.

Talking treatments for anxiety and depression are among the most popular types of treatment. These programs, previously referred to as IAPT (Interactive assessment in mental health and Psychotherapy) have seen their referral numbers increase each year since they were first introduced in 2008. The NHS Long Term Plan has committed to expanding these services to 1.9 million people by 2023/2024.

Psychiatric medications are another crucial component of treatment. They can improve symptoms through altering the way chemicals work in your brain. They can also be used to reduce the effects of other treatments. Your doctor will suggest the best medication for you.

There are many kinds of talk therapy, including group therapy and individual therapy. Some of these therapies are delivered in person, while others can be performed remotely. Some patients prefer treatment in person, but this is a personal decision. There are also a lot of charities that offer support groups and classes like Mind. The website contains a wealth of information that is reliable however, be aware of the fact that there are many false or misleading claims on the internet regarding mental health issues.

The NHS is advancing the mental health system, but it's struggling to meet the demands. In the UK, there are 54 mental health assessment test trusts. They receive the majority of funding for their services from the clinical commissioning groups. They are typically located in a particular region however, they are also able to be commissioned to provide national services.

The main issue is the insufficient resources to meet the demands of the rising population. There are also concerns about the quality of care and a shortage of nurses and psychiatrists. The NHS is trying to improve the quality of care by introducing new methods of work and delivering more training. It also provides safer and more effective methods to treat those who are in crisis. These include mobile crisis teams and mental Illness assessment safe space.

Helping you

Since the NHS was launched 70 years ago, there have been many positive changes for people with mental health issues. The treatment options have gotten better and social barriers have been taken down. But there is much more to be done.

People who are suffering from mental health problems need to be able to get the help they require quickly and easily. The NHS is striving to improve the quality of services to ensure that those who need them can get them. By 2020/21, we will make sure that all acute hospitals have a mental health liaison service that is available in A&E and on inpatient wards and that 70% of these will be in compliance with the core 24 standard by 2023/24. We will then strive for 100 percent coverage.

We will also extend services for people who need them in the community, including psychotherapy, in order to provide hundreds of thousands more patients with severe or common mental health issues the help they need. We will continue to develop our national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies program (IAPT) to ensure that more people suffering from mental health problems are seen faster by qualified therapists.

The NHS offers free, confidential helplines to anyone struggling with mental health issues. Samaritans Mind and Rethink are some of the helplines that are available. These helplines are run by trained volunteers and provide an environment where you can talk in a safe manner or provide information and advice on how to tackle your mental health concerns.

In addition, there are a number of local organizations that can provide support and guidance to people with mental health problems. Self-help guides, coping techniques and other activities are available. Many of these organisations also offer face-to-face support groups for those who prefer this method.

The University's Open Door Team offers a drop-in counseling service for students experiencing stress or depression. Nightline is a student counseling service that offers private listening assistance, information and support from knowledgeable volunteers. Charities like Mind and Rethink are a great source of information and can provide support in a variety of ways such as online and through local groups. They can also offer many classes and activities, ranging from mindfulness to art groups, which may be useful for people who suffer from mental health problems.

Referring someone to you

Mental health services are under strain and GPs must make difficult choices regarding the best specialist services to refer their patients to. The doctor will take the patient's medical history into consideration and then refer them to a service they think will be able to help. They can refer a patient to an NHS trust, or an independent provider.

A mental health professional will then review the referral and decide whether it's appropriate or not. If the specialist isn't happy with the referral they will call the GP to discuss their decision and provide why. They could request the GP to modify the referral or request additional information.

Referrals to a local Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) may be made via the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS). The system allows doctors and other healthcare professionals to refer patients to either a preliminary clinical assessment service for mental health or directly to an appointment. Not all CMHTs provide both options, and the system cannot be used for all kinds of mental health referrals.

A GP may also refer a patient to a mental health specialist in the community service (CMT). They are typically run by a large hospital or local healthcare organization. CMTs can be a good option for those who want to consult with a seasoned psychologist or psychiatrist, but do not require inpatient treatment. They can also offer an early intervention service in which psychiatrists work with a therapist in order to help someone overcome any crisis or improve the quality of their life.

One of the challenges faced by a CMT is to ensure that all referrals are assigned within the appropriate timeframe. One of the challenges is that many referrals are deemed urgent, even though they may not be. This can lead people who aren't in a crisis to be rushed and suffer delays.

To combat this problem, some CMHTs have attempted to establish more uniform guidelines for what constitutes a referral urgent. This was achieved through a standardised form that asks the referrer if they believe the case is urgent. The proforma has a box that the referrer is able to tick if the referral is urgent.
