Defra Approved Multifuel Stoves

Defra approved multifuel stoves are a great choice for those who live in areas that are smoke-free. They burn wood as well as authorised smokeless fuels efficiently and come in a wide variety of styles to meet all tastes.

The Defra Logo is usually on the appliance, or in the specifications to indicate that it is suitable to create Smoke Control Areas. They also have a high energy rating and have low emissions.

Clean Burn Technology

A large portion of the wood burning stoves that we sell are DEFRA legislation stoves approved, meaning they meet stricter standards for emissions when used in conjunction with wood and other approved fuels. This is because these stoves have been built to work with a variety of different fuels and have been independently tested to ensure that they don't emit excessive smoke. Additionally, a Defra approved stove has features like secondary and tertiary combustion that can help maximize the amount of energy in the burn and minimise harmful gasses.

Multifuel stoves that have been approved by Defra typically have an "SE" logo or the word SE (which is a reference to smoke exempt) in their name. This means that the stove has been tested independently to confirm that it can be used legally in a Smoke Control Area with logs and other approved solid fuels. The testing procedure includes several tests to test the stove's performance in various conditions, and to verify that it produces at least 5 grams of particulates/kg when burning wood.

To achieve this standard, Defra approved stoves come with a modified top air vent that prevents users from closing it completely. If you close the top vent too much will decrease the flow of oxygen to the fire, DEFRA Approved Contemporary Stoves causing it to smoulder instead of burn. If you did this with the use of a non defra stoves approved stove, you could be in violation of the law and could be prosecuted for infractions of nuisance smoking.

The best method to avoid nuisance smoke when using the wood burner is to purchase kiln-dried or seasoned wood. This is wood that has been dried for many years which helps reduce the moisture content to less than 20%. A simple wood moisture meter can be used to measure the moisture content in your wood.

You can lessen the amount of nuisance smoke generated by a Defra-approved stove by making use of dry, well-seasoned and well-seasoned logs that have been burned or kiln dried. Never burn damp, wet, or unseasoned wood. This can cause a lot more smoke and could result in you being penalized by the local authority.

Smoke Control Area Approval

DEFRA approved stoves are designed to meet strict standards for air quality that are laid out by the government. They can use a range of fuels, including wood, as well as some 'authorized smokeless fuels that are permitted in Smoke Control Areas (see DEFRA's indicative interactive tool here).

The smoke from burning untreated wood or other wet fuels in a fireplace that isn't DEFRA approved or exempt from DEFRA will cause a lot of irritation to your neighbors. This can also affect the local air quality If you reside in an urban area. You may be charged with a fine or even arrested if you burn unauthorised fuels in a Smoke Control Area or use an appliance that is not designed to work with smokeless fuels.

Defra approved stoves have secondary and tertiary combustion systems which burn fuel at lower temperatures. This produces less particulate matter (PM2.5). This is accomplished by the use of stainless steel liners and a unique convection system which pushes air down the chimney, even after the fire has gone out. This lets the stoves burn wood more efficiently and create less carbon dioxide.

A Defra Approved Stove also features an adjustment on the top vent to prevent it from being closed all the way. When you cut the air supply to the stove, it will stop burning properly, and smoulder a lot, and begin to emit smoke. Defra approved stoves allow you to shut the vent a bit but not completely so the fire can continue to burn at an lower temperature, and still be in compliance with UK legislation.

When selecting a new Defra-approved stove, it is important to consider the style and appearance and whether it will fit into the style of your home. There are lots of styles and sizes to choose from, from traditional fireplace chambers and inglenooks to more modern designs that look great in open living spaces.

The majority of Defra approved stoves have an outlet for 5kW so they can be used legally in Smoke Control Areas, which comprise the majority of UK towns and cities. This can also reduce your installation costs, since the stove will only require five" flue liner instead a more costly 6" liner.
