Defra Exempt Multi Fuel Stoves

There is a variety of multi-fuel stoves exempt from defra regulations. DEFRA recommended stoves approved stoves meet government regulations and are engineered to burn fuel efficiently with low emissions.

You may have noticed across our site that a number of our wood burning stoves are categorized as being DEFRA exempt or DEFRA approved. These terms might seem like jargon to the average homeowner, but they're not.

DEFRA stands for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and they handle regulations and policies concerning the environment, farming and food. Defra approved products have gone through rigorous testing to ensure that they adhere to the government's strict guidelines for smoke emissions when operating. This is good news for anyone who lives in a Smoke Control Area since the law currently prohibits emissions of smoke within such areas, unless you are using a DEFRA approved stove and a fuel approved by DEFRA. In the past, it was possible to install a non Defra approved wood stove in a Smoke Control Area, as long as you used only authorised fuels. But, as of January 2022, the law is changing and stoves that are not approved are not allowed to be installed unless they have been fitted with secondary or tertiary combustion system that will drastically reduce the production of particulate matter and NOx, carbon dioxide and organic gaseous compounds.

Our Defra approved ranges are equipped with a mechanism that stops you from closing down the top air vent completely. This could lead to the fire to smolder and release smoke into your home. These stoves come with an adjustable air feed that lets you open the top vent just a small amount and still have an efficient, safe burning.

A stove that is approved by Defra can be equipped with a 5-inch chimney liner. This is crucial because many building codes require a chimney to have a minimum of 5 inches diameter.

Smoke Control Areas

If you live in a smoke-control zone you'll need a DEFRA-approved stove to legally burn wood within your home. DEFRA has tested these stoves to ensure they meet the strict standards for smoke emissions required in smoke zones for control. Multi Stoves Fuel

A defra recognized stoves approved wood stove, also referred to as a DEFRA Multi Fuel or Wood Burning Stove, will have been through a rigorous test developed by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs. The UK government body is responsible for protecting our natural environment, supporting the agriculture and food industries and ensuring a vibrant rural economy. The tests that Defra Approved Stoves must clear are designed so that the stove produces small amounts of grit or smoke when it is operating.

Stove Supermarket offers a variety of Defra Exempt Stoves that are multi-fuel stoves. This means you can use smokeless wood that is authorised and well-seasoned fuels. These stoves are also referred to as Defra stoves, Defra approved wooden burners and are abbreviated SE.

The most recent Defra stoves for woodburning and multi-fuel come with secondary and tertiary ventilation systems that ensure that the wood is fully burned before it exits the chimney. In the Smoke Control Area, you are not permitted to use open fires or stoves for burning damp, rotten, or wet wood or any other fuels.

Burning Other Fuels

Defra Approved stoves are designed to burn a wide range of fuels including wood. They burn wood so efficiently that they comply with the strict regulations of the government for emissions when operating in smoke control zones. This means that they can be used legally in any area of smoke control as long as you're burning approved fuels such as logs, pellets and Briquettes. Stoves that are Defra approved will usually be identified by the an 'SE' symbol that stands for Smoke Exempt.

A stove that is Defra-approved differs from a typical multifuel stove because it has secondary air vents that heat air prior to entering the firebox. The pre-heated air helps ensure that all the fuel is ignited and burned, which results in more efficient combustion. It also helps to reduce the build-up of soot up and stops the chimney from clogging. Defra stoves are equipped with internal baffles that help control the flames and ensure a uniform heat distribution.

Using non-Defra approved stoves in areas with smoke control could result in substantial fines from the UK government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). To avoid the risk of being prosecuted by Defra you should purchase and make use of a DEFRA approved stove that has been tested to the government's strict criteria.
