How to Replace window replacements Panes

A damaged window pane can be a nuisance. It could be a chance to upgrade your windows to energy efficient or insulated ones and enjoy benefits like increased comfort, increased resale values and reduced utility costs.

This is a project you could take on yourself for a fraction of the cost of hiring an expert. You only need the proper tools and a few minutes of your time.

Glass

In addition to a new pane, the following components are needed: latex glazing putty; glazier's points; pliers; and the use of a heat gun to warm the old putty, if needed. Wear safety goggles and gloves prior to starting. Working with broken glass could result in serious injuries.

Take out any broken glass pieces remaining. It is best to use pliers for this, but a flathead can work as well. Then, use a wooden chisel or putty knife take the remainder of the old putty from the frame and replace window pane the sash. Be careful not to scratch the window sash. Be careful and slow. This can be done best on a ladder, not the ground. Also, ensure that someone on the ground to keep it in place.

Make sure that the window frame is ready to receive the new pane when you have removed the old glue. Measure the width and height of the opening for the sash by subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). Take these measurements to the nearest hardware store or home center, and get a piece of stock glass cut to size. You can also cut the glass by yourself if you have the right tools.

After installing the new glass Apply caulking on the edges. This will make the glass weatherproof. Install a glazier's point on both sides of the frame. This will secure the pane. The points should not be too tight that they create friction between the frame and the sash However, they should not be loose.

Before putting the putty on, knead it thoroughly until it's soft and free of lumps. Make it into pencil-sized strips. Apply the first strip to the frame's corner. Work from corner to corner to ensure it's even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier’s points are small triangular metal pieces which help to secure the glass into the window frame without damaging the delicate surface. It's simple to learn how to use this secret tool, and you'll be able to save money on the expense of a professional installation.

After getting rid of the old putty glazier points and any residue clean the frame thoroughly with an utility knife. Lightly sand the frame in the rabbet grooves if needed to smooth out rough areas. Take the dimensions of the frame and note down precise measurements. Take these dimensions to an hardware store or home center and have the new pane cut slightly smaller than the frame's opening. This will ensure a secure fit and will allow room for expansion and contraction.

Then, use the tip of your chisel, or the back end of the putty knife to pierce the glazier's facets, as shown in Figure 11. The glazier's points should be aligned with the top edge of your pane, and the raised shoulders should be just below the lip.

Apply a thin layer of glazing compound to the rabbet grooves and edges of the glass. This will seal and protect the edges. Allow it to dry completely and cure.

Once the glazing compound has dried, you're ready to install the new window sash. First, coat the wood with a heavy coat of Linseed oil. This will prevent the newly-created putty from drying out or cracking due to the moisture it absorbs. Use a brush to apply this coat, or the point of the blade. Then, use the chisel on the back of the tool or the back of the handle to gently hit the new sash, or glazier's point into the rabbet grooves. Repeat this process in intervals of 10 inches all around the frame.

Putty

A baseball that is thrown, an errant rock or a falling branch can cause a window to crack or break. Fortunately, windows can be repaired by simply putting a brand new piece in the proper place. The glass is held in place using small clips made of metal called a glazier's point and putty, which is often called glazing compound. Before installing a new pane, first get rid of the old one and clean up the area using the help of a rag, the pull-type paint scraper or a wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves when you work. If the window is attached to the frame, you'll need to use a heat gun to soften the adhesive before taking it off.

If you are planning to install the original sash, take off the molding that supports the old pane. Then you can sand the sash down to make sure it's flat and ready for a new caulk. Once the sash is reinstalled it is possible to apply a silicone caulk on the glass. This will ensure that it won't leak over time or discolor.

Remove the glazing points from the rabbets and the grooves in the sash where the glass sits. If they're difficult to work out, try placing a hand tool like a heat gun to soften them before you do. When using a heat tool, make sure to not scratch the sash and its railings.

After the old points of glazing and putty have been removed, prepare a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope with glazing compound between your fingers and then make it about 1/2 inch thick. Press it into the rabbets, where the glass will be placed. The glass should rest against the putty on both sides. If necessary gently tap your glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack you can fill it with a solvent-based glass glue or silicone caulk prior to pressing it into the sash. If not, you'll have to apply putty over the crack to form a tight seal and keep water out. When the putty dries and the film is oily, wipe it off the glass with the help of a rag. Allow it to dry completely prior to painting. If you paint before the putty is fully dry, it won't create an effective seal and could leak or discolor over time.

Paint

If you've had a broken window pane, then you may be worried about the cost of a new one. But the truth is that replacing a single glass pane doesn't require a huge amount of money If you can do it yourself. Even a double-paned window can be replaced for a fraction of what it will cost an expert.

If you're working with a large glass window first ensure it is securely fixed to the frame. By using the correct tools and techniques you can complete this task easily and speedy.

When you're ready to start taking off the old window by removing the glazing points of metal that are attached to it. These are tiny metal triangles which act as "nails" that hold the window in place. They are submerged beneath a glaze putty or bead which hardens into an unbreakable wedge which holds the wood frame in place and conceals the edges.

After removing the old pane, clean the frame and the wood. Scrape off any paint that has been used and sand down the rabbet grooves in which the glazing points were. These should be sanded down to bare wood to allow you to paint them the same color as the rest of the frame. After sanding the wood then apply a layer of flax oil. This will help extend its life.

The next step is to measure the dimensions of the window opening. You'll need to take vertical and horizontal measurements of the entire opening as well as the thickness of the old pane. To get the exact size of the new pane, subtract 1/8 inch from both measurements. This will also allow for expansion and contraction of the glass in times of seasonal changes. You can take these measurements to a hardware store or home improvement store and have the glass cut for you.

Now, it's time to bed the new window pane. To do this, place the pane inside the frame and move it around until a 1/16 inch of putty remains between the edge of the glass and the sash on all four sides. Use a putty knife to smear the putty evenly, making sure that there isn't an excessive amount of excess putty in the corners and along the edges. When the putty dries, it can be painted with the same color as the frame to prevent water and air from leaking into the frame and causing fogging.
