Bunk beds add drama to kids' rooms and also give them a sense of adventure. Ms. Keenan adds a shelf to store books or a reading lamp in each sleeping space to make bunk beds more attractive to children.
A lot of our bunk beds for kids can be converted into two twin beds. This is perfect when you plan to make them move to their own bedroom in the future. Choose from finishes like white, brushed gray and rich walnut.
Stairs and Ladders
When choosing kids beds bunk there is the option to pick between stairs or Kids Beds Bunk ladders. Ladders are less expensive and easy to install and offer an easy way to climb into the top bed. They are also considered safer than staircases, because they have a larger surface for children to walk on and have a built-in handrail. They also have grooves on the steps, which help prevent slippage when climbing up or down the bed.
However, if you prefer the style and look of stairs, they may be a beautiful addition to your bunk bed. Staircases can also be used in rooms with limited space since they aren't as imposing as ladders. They can be constructed from wood or metal and can be matched to a wide range of bedroom designs. Some staircases come with storage drawers which can be an ideal way to expand the size of bunk beds.
Another thing to take into consideration when deciding between stairs and a ladder is the age of your child. It is recommended that no one sleeps on the top bunk under the age of 6, older children who are comfortable climbing vertically might be better off using stairs rather than a ladder. If you are planning to use your bunk bed for guests, like younger children or adults with limitations in mobility, it's recommended to use stairs.
A straight staircase along the side of the bunk requires a minimum of 95" of space on each side. If you do not have the space, you can opt for the u-shaped stairs that does not require as much room but still allows you to reach the top bunk in a safe and securely. Certain beds offer the option of detaching the stairs when they're not in use, which reduces their footprint and makes them more versatile for multipurpose rooms. You can also find staircases that connect to the bottom of the bed and eliminate the requirement for a separate handrail, and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
Guard Rails
Guard rails let children climb in and out of their beds on their own, giving them a sense of independence and confidence. However, they must be set properly, ensuring that there aren't any gaps or movement occurs between rails of the guard and bed frame. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer when installing guard rails, and ensure that you examine them regularly to ensure that they're not loose or have holes that could cause the entrapment.
One of the most important safety concerns for bunk beds is to keep them free from electrical devices as well as other items that could become projectiles when your kids play or sleep. Make sure you place bunks away from windows, which could be a danger to fall in the event that children climb on the top of the bed.
You may want to install an evening light on the ladder to illuminate the steps up and down if your child wakes at night to use the bathroom, or are woken by a storm to leave their room.
Another excellent security feature for bunk beds is a safety net, that can be put up on the top of the bunk bed kids to stop children from falling over while they are asleep or playing. This is a great idea for older children, who are more likely to sleep on the top bunk.
Guardrails must be firmly attached to the bunk bed structure and not removed without the use tools. Openings in the guardrails above the mattress foundation must not be greater than 3.5 inches to avoid strangulation and entrapment. Place the wedge block shown on Figure 1 in each opening of the uppermost guardrail member and above the mattress foundation. Apply 33 lbf (147 N) in a direction perpendicular the plane of the larger edge of the block for one minute.
It is a good idea to inform your children to not hang any objects on the guardrail or ladder for example, clothing, belts, and sporting equipment. Instead you should utilize a clothes rack to prevent the objects from creating a strangulation risk for your child. Also, ensure that more than one kid should not sleep on the top level of the bunk, since this could create an imbalance that could cause falls.
Mattresses
Be aware of the age of your child and their size when choosing a mattress for bunk beds. A bunk mattress should last for at least eight years or until siblings do not share bedrooms, so you'll want to choose a mattress that is designed to adapt to the needs of your child and still provide sufficient support as they grow older.
Bunk mattresses are usually twin or full-size, and there are plenty of options that can accommodate either. If your child has allergies or asthma choose an allergy-free mattress that has an anti-dust barrier and a moisture-wicking cover. Mattresses with an antimicrobial coating will shield the foam against harmful bacteria and germs.
Another crucial aspect to consider is the feel of your mattress. Kids generally weigh less than adults, which means they need a mattress that feels firm but also comfortable. Many latex and hybrid mattresses come with a firm side and a soft side to accommodate both children's requirements.
Memory foam mattresses work well for kids, but they're not our first recommendation as they can trap heat and may be too hard on young spines. Consider a hybrid or a latex mattress, which offers strong support and cooling infusions that allow your guest or child to sleep comfortably.
Low-profile mattresses are usually the ideal choice for bunk beds for children. These are designed to be thinner than standard mattresses and increase safety rail height for the top bunk. They reduce "filler" material to provide top quality and durability with slim designs.
Consider an innerspring model or a hybrid with upper comfort layers that can be removed and replaced as your child develops. These models will provide you with an idea of the longevity of the mattress as your child grows. You can also add a mattress skirt or bed pad to prevent it from sliding. Some mattresses have side rails or a lip built in to prevent this.
Stores
Bunk beds can be a great way to save space in shared kid rooms. Bunk beds are also a less expensive alternative to purchasing two full-sized single beds. Some bunks offer the option of a trundle bed which can be hidden under the bunk that is not being used.
To maximize storage and space in a room with bunk beds, think about installing a combination kids bedroom furniture set which includes desks, dressers or bookcases. This will allow you keep all your child's clothing as well as toys and personal belongings in one location instead of cramming everything into overstuffed chests or closets. These kids bedroom furniture sets are available from a number of retailers and typically comply with all safety standards of the federal government.
Stacking bunks can provide a playground for imagination as kids can transform the spaces below into secret spaces for play or cozy spaces. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked 6 bunks in this room to create the ultimate best kids bunk beds space that can be used for sleeping, playing and even superhero cape twirls. The room features bubble walls covered with Chasing Paper and a ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Blue Jean to create the perfect escape.
If you cannot install a staircase to your bunk beds then a ladder is a good alternative. They are constructed with a single socket, Flange, and 90 Degree Side Outlet Fittings. They can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease distance between ladder rungs. The rungs of the ladder are also set in a way that they are directly in contact with the ground, instead of above it, so that climbing is less intimidating.
Another way to maximize space in a room that has bunk beds is to install loft beds for kids that can be moved down to just above the floor. This allows you to slide dressers, desks or toy chests beneath the beds. This is an excellent way to maximize space in small bedrooms or large family homes where beds have to be capable of accommodating multiple sleepers.
