Saab Key Programming

Saab cars that were built prior to 1994 come with an immobilizer system built on coded keys. Adding an extra key requires an entirely new transponder and programming. This is usually done by the dealer using a Tech2 diagnostic tool.

This can be expensive. You should always keep an extra set of keys available.

Transponder key

The transponder is a piece of key that is equipped with an electronic chip. This chip sends out a signal when the key is put into the ignition. The car will then check the signal to determine whether it matches that of the key. If the signals match it will unlock and begin. This is an excellent way to guard your car against theft.

Transponder keys are a common feature in automobiles, but it is important to know that they're not as secure as classic keys made of metal. While the metal portion of a traditional key may be cut and copied but a transponder key is protected by an electronic chip. The chip contains a unique code which is programmed into a car's computer in order to identify it.

When a Saab key fob is used, the car recognizes it and allows it to turn on. However, it is only able to do this if the fob is unmodified and has a chip that has been programmed to match. Otherwise, the car would reject the key and not start.

The next step is connecting the wires of columns and row to your microcontroller. This is the most challenging part of the project and will require a good deal of soldering. There's no standard way to do this, but it is crucial to plan the route you'll take and solder the rows and columns. For this keyboard, there are 5 rows and 17 columns, which means there will be 22 microcontroller pins and wires to connect.

After the columns and rows are soldered, it's the time to connect them to key switches. Solder a diode to each key switch pin. This will shield the pins from current, and prevent them from getting shorted. Jumpstarting the battery

Most people keep a few sets of jumper cables in their trunks in case of emergency, but jumping a battery in newer automobiles might not be the most efficient option. A voltage spike when the battery is connected to another could cause damage to the components, rendering your car undriveable.

Connect the cables to the vehicle operating. Let it run for two minutes. Attach the red clip to the positive terminal on the good battery (it will have "POS" or "+" on it). Attach the other end of the black cable to an unpainted, clean metal surface under the disabled car's hood. The engine block is a good choice. The black cable should not be connected to the negative terminal of the dead battery. This could create sparks, which could ignite gasoline in the engine compartment.

Once the cables are connected, you can start the vehicle and let it run about five minutes. Then disconnect the cables in reverse. Most locksmiths can't help you if you have only one working key and the dealer will charge you for the cost of replacing the computer in your vehicle to make a replacement. However, we can reset and reprogram the computer's EEPROM to accept the new key, without replacing the entire system. This can save you a significant amount of money. It's also much less expensive than waiting until you lose your only key.
