On the other hand, certain receivers excel at playing inside and can't do much on the outside. For instance, the Panthers handed Robby Anderson 978 snaps last season, and he ran 74 percent of his slot routes, compared to just 26% for boundary routes. This is an enormous difference and shows just how much more productive Robby Anderson is when he's aligned with the slot.

Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, lines up inside most of the time on his passes and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is a master in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers are typically more efficient when they line up inside, as they are able to be targeted down the field, and often have one-on-one coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks also belong to this group. Both have been able to generate pressures in the pass game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles, and Moore being the most effective tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by using his slot to play nickel and dime packs and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. Additionally, Moore's ability to stop big run plays has been a huge asset when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also worth noting that their slot counterparts are equally excellent. Wide receivers who have high slot grades score touchdowns about the same as those on the outside. This is mostly because quarterbacks have a more stable target distribution when throwing to slot and outside receivers compared to other inside options like tight ends and backfield pass-catchers.

It's therefore interesting to see a player like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets and flanker in two of them. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than a lot of the players on this list. This is an excellent opportunity to increase matchup benefits for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system.

Of course, he also plays the X position and makes huge plays on the perimeter as well. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this list but he's a very high-graded receiver and is an excellent player for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman, another player who is able to put huge numbers on both types of targets, is a further example. He has a very high slot receiver grade and is one of the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws however, he's also a formidable player for contested-catch.

Another player on this list who's a true slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has been positioned in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets, and the fifth-highest EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him a valuable part of his team's defensive unit. He's had a difficult time stopping passes from the outside and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is because he's been playing with linebackers and safety players who can't match Hilton's speed, size and ability to run routes.
