Transponder Keys
Transponder keys (a portmanteau for transmitter and responder) contain an electronic chip in their heads. When they are fitted into a car that has transponder technology, the chip sends low-level signals to a receiver located near the ignition switch. If the chip is programmed to do so it will trigger the engine to switch on. Transponder chips were developed to stop car thieves from stealing cars and that is why they are present in a majority of modern cars.
Transponder technology was first used in World War II, when coded messages were transmitted over radio frequencies to determine whether incoming aircraft were friendly or hostile. General Motors created the first transponder key in 1985, for its Corvette. Since then, they've been standard on most new cars, and can also be retrofitted into older models.
If you have a car that has this type of security system, make sure you always keep an extra transponder card at hand, as it only works if the chip is scanned properly. It's not foolproof. Some people have found ways to trick the system. These kits include tutorials on how to bypass the transponder with wires and electrical relays.
Proximity keys
Proximity keys are among the most recent keyless entry solutions, which are now being used on a variety of vehicles. They let drivers unlock their vehicles by touching the door handle using the key fob they carry in their purse or pocket. The key fob will then communicate with the car, disengaging the immobiliser and allowing for the engine to begin.
There are some disadvantages for proximity key systems however. If the key fob becomes damaged or lost, it is unable to be used to start your car. It could be expensive to have a locksmith or dealership replace it. Batteries also power the fobs, which means they'll have to be replaced regularly.
The proximity key technology has the disadvantage of removing the cause-and-effect cycle we are used to when using physical keys. When using a traditional key, when you touch the lock and it opens, you know you have the key. With proximity-sensing keys you'll need to be within a certain distance of the vehicle to activate it.
Despite their downsides proximity keys are an amazing invention for those who aren't looking to be locked out of their car. In the event of an emergency, always have an additional key on hand if you own a proximity key. If you need a new key, contact the local Pop-A Lock to inquire about replacement costs and to receive a price for services.
Keyless Entry Systems
The days of hiding keys in the home are over, and landlords can offer tenants better security by installing an entry system that is keyless. These systems sync to back-end software, allowing landlords to keep track of entry and exit. In addition, these systems make it simpler for tenants to enter the property in case in the event of a crisis.
Keyless entry systems transmit encrypted signals to an inside receiver. The receiver interprets the signal and opens or starts the engine. It also detects the presence of a driver and adjust the vehicle's settings in accordance with their preferences. It will automatically close the door in the event that, for instance the driver has an item in his bag.
Although most keyless entry systems are incredibly safe, some are vulnerable to attack. For example the term replay attack refers to when the remote control signal is recorded, and then repeated to the device at a later point. This can be prevented by adding an algorithm to the keyless entry system that makes sure that each transmission is distinct from previous ones.
Another advantage of a keyless entry system is that it doesn't require changing locks after every tenant's move. This is a significant cost of the process of transferring units, and it makes sense for landlords to avoid this expense whenever possible. Additionally with a keyless entry system the only thing that is required is to reset the code, which is much quicker and easier than replacing the entire lock.
