Many medications can help those with cerebral palsy lessen muscle spasticity and improve flexibility. However, some medications may cause unwelcome side effects and can create safety hazards, especially when used for long periods of time.
Surgery isn't a cure for CP however it can improve mobility and reduce pain. It can also reduce seizures, which are life-threatening for those with CP.
Diagnosis
Cerebral PALSY is a category of non-progressive disorders that affect movement, posture and the muscles in the legs or arms. The condition is typically diagnosed in the early stages of childhood or even in the infant stage and is caused by brain injuries or abnormalities. The injury could have occurred in the womb or shortly after the birth of the baby. However, doctors may not be aware of the exact cause.
The doctor will examine your child to determine if he or she has CP. The doctor will conduct baby a physical test to assess the muscle tone as well as reflexes and movements. They will also monitor your baby's growth as time passes to determine whether or not he is making progress towards milestones.
If the doctor suspects there's something wrong, they could decide to conduct an imaging exam. An MRI is the most popular test, which utilizes magnetic fields and creates detailed images of your baby’s brain. The MRI can detect changes in the brain of your child that are related to CP. Another alternative is an ultrasound which uses sound waves to make images of your baby's head and other organs. This test is more suitable for infants who are still very young, but it may not be as reliable in identifying problems that are connected with CP.
A doctor could refer your child, addition to an MRI or CT scan, to a child physiatrist (a doctor who has received specialized training in pediatric diseases that affect the spine, muscles, and nerves). These specialists can help provide a more precise diagnosis and create an appropriate treatment plan for your child.
Treatment
Each child's CP is unique and requires an individual health plan. Your family is likely to be working with a group of specialists, which includes a neurosurgeon, pediatric neurologist as well as a physical rehabilitation and medicine specialist and a child developmental specialist. These experts will form a treatment group that includes your family and oversee your child's development.
Doctors can make a diagnosis of CP based on your child's symptoms as well as their history. They will also perform an examination to look for indications of the condition. This includes muscle weakness and tightness in walking and moving, speech and intelligence problems, and abnormal reflexes.
In certain instances, doctors may be able in some cases to determine that your child may develop CP when they observe specific risk factors. For example, if your child is born in the breech position or has a difficult labor and delivery in which case they are more likely to be diagnosed with CP. Babies who are small for their gestational age also have higher risks. The complications that can arise during labor and delivery, including infections, a high fever and other conditions that can hinder oxygen flow to the brain, can also increase your child's risk of cerebral palsy.
The use of medicines can improve your child's movement and reduce stiffness and pain in muscles. They can be administered by mouth or injected into muscles or infused into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. The drugs can also be used to treat seizures and other disorders like epilepsy which are often associated with cerebral palsy.
Preventing CP
You can reduce the risk of CP by taking steps to lower your genetic risk. Regularly attend prenatal appointments and address health issues prior to becoming pregnant, if it is possible. Make sure you are current on your vaccinations during pregnancy. Certain infections, such as rubella and cytomegalovirus are linked to an increase in cerebral palsy among infants.
Babies with CP might be slow to learn how to sit, crawl, or walk. They may have low muscular tone (hypotonia) which makes them appear sloppy or relaxed. Or they may have a high level of muscle tone (hypertonia) which makes their bodies appear rigid or stiff. They may show signs of speech problems or seizures, or prefer one side of their body.
About 75% of CP patients have spastic CP. This causes muscles to be stiff and tight. Some people only have some muscles affected, while others suffer from severe spasticity, which affects their entire body, which includes their mouth and face. This kind of CP is known as spastic hemoplegia, and it can cause a curved spine (scoliosis) or difficulty swallowing.
Dyskinetic CP is a different type of CP. It causes movements that are slow and twisty or fast and jerky. It can make your legs or face appear to be writhing, and you might get a little drooling. Some people with CP might have more than one type of CP. Each type is different.
Living with CP
Cerebral palsy affects people in different ways, from mild to severe. Some people suffering from CP require little assistance, while others are unable to move and require wheelchairs. A severe case can result in spastic quadriplegia.
Children suffering from CP may benefit from physical, occupational and speech therapy to improve their posture, balance and mobility. Surgery is sometimes required to correct problems in their joints or bones. They may be afflicted with hearing loss, fatigue and pain, as well as excessive drooling and difficulty detecting sensations. Some people with CP experience depression that is more prevalent in the CP population than in the general population.
Many adults with CP reside in their home, take part in community activities, cerebral palsy and receive personal assistance. They may also be able to find work but some may have to make adjustments. People who have CP tend to be prematurely old because their bodies are unable to handle the additional stress.
Even with severe symptoms people with CP can lead a fulfilling and happy life. They may have a family, friends and careers. They can also join support groups, which can help them connect with other people suffering from CP and locate local resources. Many foundations and organizations offer financial assistance to families to ease the burden so that they can concentrate on receiving the best care possible. If your child's cerebral palsy was caused by medical negligence from a healthcare professional, you may be entitled to compensation.
