A veterans disability lawsuit could be a solution for many veterans suffering from disabilities as a result of their military service. The Department of Veterans Affairs offers benefits to veterans, including medical treatment and special programs.
According to a lawsuit filed Monday, Black veterans have disproportionately more difficulty getting these benefits. The suit was filed on behalf of Conley Monk Jr. by Yale Law School's Veterans Legal Services Clinic.
PTSD
If people suffer from trauma, it can cause them to develop symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These symptoms could include flashbacks, nightmares or anxiety that cause anxiety. The condition may also cause a person to avoid certain locations or situations that remind them of the trauma. This can cause people to feel lonely and depressed. The lawsuit was filed by Marine Vietnam veteran Conley monk and Yale's Veterans Legal Services Clinic. The lawsuit cites data that show that between 2001 and 2020, the percentage for Black veterans of disability claims was rejected at 29.5 percent, compared to 24.2 percent of white veterans.
The lawsuit seeks compensatory damage for Monk and Black veterans who were wrongfully denied benefits. It also aims to force the VA to reassess hundreds of other claims that were wrongly dismissed. The lawsuit was filed in federal court this week.
Traumatic Brain Injury
TBI can be mild, moderate or severe and symptoms may be immediately visible or they may appear within a few hours or even weeks after the injury.
