A window that is damaged is an annoying and inconvenient issue. It can let hot or cold air in your home, and leave a gap which allows dirt or moisture to get into. This can affect your energy efficiency as your AC or furnace will have to work harder in order to keep your home comfortable. A cracked window can be repaired with strong-duty tape. A tape strip placed over a crack can stop it from worsening. A crack that extends into the glass or is too big to cover with tape, will need to be completely replaced.

Broken glass can be caused by various factors: a pebble from a lawnmower that hits the window; drinking a drink that is set too heavily on a glass-topped table or a pet's euphoric jump when you open the door. The frames of your window can move over time and break the packaging material that holds the glass sheets in place.

Wear thick work gloves in the event of a broken pane of glass. Place a cardboard box near the pane to collect any fragments. Then remove the sash from the frame and work on a flat surface such as a table. Wear a mask to avoid breathing in the glass shattering.

After removing the old glass, take off any varnish and paint from the window frame. You can use a heat gun to soften old glazing putty or window Repair the metal points that held the glass in position.

You can then measure the opening for the new pane. You should always get your replacement glass slightly smaller than the opening of the original to allow for expansion and contraction. You can request that your local hardware store or your home center cut it to these dimensions.

Place the glass into the frame. Fill any gaps with silicone caulk. You can purchase it at a home improvement shop. Smooth the caulk using a putty knife. Add glazier's points to the corners of the glass and frame around every six inches, to ensure that they secure the pane in the right place.

Condensation

Condensation can happen on double-glazed windows, regardless of whether they are old or brand new. This is particularly true in winter when colder air comes into contact with warmer glass. This can cause problems but it's not typically an problem. Condensation on windows is a sign that your double glazing system is functioning correctly.

However, it can be a sign that the seal is failing and water is leaking through the crack between the window panes. You might notice an appearance of milky water on the window or beads appearing across its surface, and this is something that needs to be addressed to stop mold, mildew or any further damage.

Condensation is easily removed. A technician will drill a tiny number of holes into the window frame, allowing the moisture trapped to escape. This process is referred to as defogging. It can also help to remove any stains caused by the trapped moisture.

Defogging does not fix the root issue of a faulty window seal. In fact, it may not even if the condensation is gone, window repair since the damaged air between the panes is still there. This could mean that you will still not get as much insulation from your windows as you should.

These window seals, which help keep the glass in place, are made of uPVC or aluminum. There can be issues such as the loss of energy and draughts if the window seals fail.

The failure of the insulating gases in double-glazed windows is the common cause of misting windows. The argon gases keep the glass in place, and create an airtight sealing however, if it gets damaged or worn out, the gas can escape. The gases released by argon can lead to condensation between the glass panes.

The issue can be resolved by replacing the window seal and re-inserting glass. You can apply an anti-fogging treatment to stop any further condensation. The best method to do this is to contact an expert to complete the job for you.
