It's a great thing for those who reside in Smoke Control Area because the law currently prohibits smoke emissions within these areas unless using an approved DEFRA stoves ratings and reviews stove and an approved fuel. In the past, it was possible to install an non Defra approved wood stove in a Smoke Control Area, as long as you used only authorised fuels. In the case of our Defra approved stoves, they are equipped with a mechanism which will stop you from closing the top air vent all the way down since this could cause the fire to smolder and emit smoke into your room. Instead, these stoves have an adjustable air flow that lets you open the top vent slightly and still keep a safe and efficient burn.

A stove that is approved by Defra can be fitted with a 5-inch chimney liner. This is important because the majority of codes require a chimney to have a minimum 5-inch diameter.

Many of the Defra Exempt stoves we stock at Stove Supermarket are multi fuel stoves which allow you to burn authorised smokeless fuels as well as seasoned wood. These stoves are also referred to as Defra stoves, Defra approved wooden burners and are abbreviated SE.

Unlike older stoves, which are not suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas, the latest Defra multi-fuel and woodburning stoves feature secondary and tertiary air systems to ensure that the wood is completely burned prior to it leaving the chimney. This is a more efficient process than just leaving a log fire on the stove to burn for a long time and it reduces the amount of nuisance smoke that is generated.

If you are living or planning to move into a Smoke Control Area then a Defra-exempt stove will be an excellent choice for you. Not only will it be more environmentally friendly but it will also help minimise the nuisance smoke that can irritate your neighbours.

You are still able to use open fires, barbecues and pizza ovens in your yard but be aware that toxic or excessive smoke could be a statutory nuisance and could result in a fine. You are also not allowed to burn wet, damp or rotting wood, or other fuels in an open flame or stove within the Smoke Control Area.

Burning Other Fuels Other Than Petroleum

Defra Approved Stoves are made to burn various fuels, including wood. They burn wood so efficiently that they meet the strict regulations of the government regarding emissions when operating in smoke control zones. They can be used in any smoke control area provided they are burning approved fuels, such as pellets, briquettes or logs. Stoves that are Defra approved are usually identified with the a 'SE' logo which signifies Smoke Exempt.

What makes the Defra approved stove distinct from traditional multifuel stoves is that they have secondary air vents which pre-heat the air prior to it entering the firebox. This pre-heated air helps ensure that all the fuel is ignited and burned, resulting in more efficient combustion. This also prevents the accumulation of soot that can block the chimney. The Defra stoves come with internal baffles that help control the flames and ensure a uniform heat distribution.

Using non-Defra approved stoves in smoke controlled areas could result in heavy fines from the UK government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). To avoid being accused of trespassing by Defra you should purchase and use a DEFRA approved stove that has been tested to meet the government's strict standards.

DEFRA stoves are also referred to as Clean Burn stoves. They can be used with all kinds of fuel, but are ideally suited for dry hard and soft wood. They are designed with air vents that can't be completely closed so the stove will always receive oxygen to support pure combustion and minimize noxious gases and [Redirect-302] soot.

This technology is not just compliant with the current government's standards for air quality but also with the future Ecodesign requirements that will come in 2022. A large portion of Stovax wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves we sell will bear this SIA Ecodesign Ready mark which indicates that they comply with these new stricter emissions standards. These new standards are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure that the air we breathe healthy and clean.

Installation

If you reside in a Smoke Control Zone, a Defra-exempt multifuel stove can help you comply with the rules. These wood burning and multi fuel appliances have been tested by independent experts in order to ensure that they meet the strict standards for smoke emissions required in a Smoke control zone. These stoves can be used to burn wood or other authorised fuels like coal without concern about the amount of smoke they produce.

Stoves that are DEFRA approved are able to reduce smoke levels using advanced combustion technology that creates less smoke. They employ the second stage of combustion that burns the waste products that were burned in the first stage. This makes them cleaner and more efficient. These stoves can reduce not only the amount of carbon dioxide emissions, but also the amount of soot in the chimney and flue.

This is a great benefit for those who live in a smoke controlled area since it means you can enjoy a real fire more often and for longer, with the additional benefit of lower energy bills. Because of the reduced levels of pollution, these types of wood-burning and multi fuel stoves are also eco-friendly since they can use a wider range of materials than other stoves.

A simple kit provided by the manufacturer can make many stoves DEFRA-exempt. This alters the air vents on the stove to stop them from closing at night. This is known as slumbering, and allows part-burned combustibles and flammables to escape into the air instead of going up the chimney where they could hinder the flue. DEFRA approved stoves don't sleep, and therefore are better for the environment and far less likely to block a chimney.

To make the most of your DEFRA approved stove it is recommended you have it professionally installed by an HETAS registered installer or a Building Control Officer. You will have peace of assurance that the installation was done according to the correct specifications, and is compliant with the current regulations. Additionally, it will also ensure your warranty since the installer will be able to self-certify their work.
