There are many things to consider when choosing a new stove. From the enticing appeal of dual functionality to the practical issues of installation, compliance and safety.
DEFRA approved back boiler stoves are the ideal solution to these issues. They emit very little smoke since they use the absolute minimum amount of combustion air.
Clean Burn Technology
A back boiler stove that is defra-approved is an excellent choice if you want a clean burning stove that can provide heat to your home and provide hot water to radiators. The stoves come with an integrated steel boiler that can be used for heating your central heating system while the fire is burning inside the stove, this means it's a more efficient way to use wood burning stoves.
The majority of our defra certified back boiler stoves come with an airwash system that is pre heated which helps keep the glass doors clear of ash and soot deposits. They also come with a secondary combustion system that is able to reburn any unburned particulates produced during the initial burn. This keeps the flue gas clear, which leads to a more efficient burn and lower fuel costs, [Redirect-Java] which can save you money on your energy costs.
Some of our stoves are more efficient than this and have been independently tested to meet the latest more stringent DEFRA emissions standards to be Defra SE (Smoke Exempt) approved. They do this by having an adjustment on the top vent that prevents the vent from closing completely that would shut off the oxygen supply to the fire. This causes it to smolder rather than burn cleanly which results in more pollutants being released into the air.
The moisture content of the fuel can also be a significant factor in the amount of smoke that is released from a stove. We recommend burning only dried, seasoned wood with minimum moisture content of 20 percent to ensure your stove burns as efficiently and effectively as it can. Most of our Defra approved stoves have a built-in moisture sensor that will adjust the burn rate according to using damp or wet wood.
Some manufacturers have gone a step further to enhance the efficiency of their stoves by incorporating an advanced clean burn system, which is controlled by a chrome pull lever on the base of the stove that opens and closes the vent which draws air into the fire and reburns the initial smoke that was produced during the initial combustion process. Our Defra SE approved ranges are now even more efficient. You can save money on your energy bills.
Easy to Clean
A defra approved back boiler stove will allow you to run your central heating and hot water off the same system. This can be achieved by running a loop from the other tappings on the back boiler (there are typically two) to the hot water tank, then using thermosyphoning to bring the heat into the house. This means that your boiler will never run out of hot water, as it will be fed from the tank.
To ensure that your stove is operating at its peak performance you need to clean it regularly. Start by ensuring that the stove is not hot to the touch. Next, clean the main body of the stove as well as the door with a clean cloth. We would recommend using a microfiber towel, since they are much less rough than cotton ones.
After cleaning the inside of your stove It is a good idea to clean the glass. Glass cleaners are available in a variety of hardware stores and will help remove stubborn marks and stains. Glass cleaners should be used with caution since too much of it can harm glass surfaces.
Over time the seals around the glass of your stove's and doors could begin to wear out. It is important to replace the seals at least once a year to avoid gaps that let heat escape. Based on the model you pick it is possible to do this easily using stove rope that is available from many hardware stores.
If you own a defra approved stove with an Eco Design 2022 compliant back boiler, then the combustion process is more efficient than traditional wood burning stoves. This is due to the fact that the most recent technologies have reduced the amount of combustibles that are part-burned that are released into the atmosphere. Stoves that are compliant are more environment efficient and are also less expensive to run.
A back boiler stove is always more expensive than a regular multifuel stove since it produces more hot water. But, it's an extremely cost-effective way to heat your home, because you can run both your central heating and hot water through the same system.
Easy to Install
Boiler stoves are stylish and efficient option that can supply hot and warm water for your central heating system. Contrary to other multi-fuel stoves that require connection to an existing gas boiler a wood burner with back boiler can connect directly to your mains hot water supply and central heating source and eliminate the need for a separate heating system.
Wood burning stoves that include a back boiler are also an excellent choice for those looking to be green. In addition, because they burn pellets and logs, they generate fewer emissions than gas or oil heating systems, making them a great choice for those concerned with the impact their energy usage has on global warming.
While many people may be confused about how a wood burning stove with a back boiler functions installation of one is relatively simple. It's important to ensure the stove is correctly installed and is connected to your heating system. This is best done by a qualified heating technician. They can verify that your stove is installed correctly and connected to correct systems. They can also ensure that all safety devices are installed.
Defra Approved stoves, or Defra Exempt Stoves as they are sometimes referred to and have passed the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA guidelines stoves) requirements for smoke emission levels. They can be used in Smoke Control Areas. They have been tested and modified to ensure that they create a very efficient burn and can be used with wood or smokeless fuels.
As as such, DEFRA approved stoves, like the Defra Exempt Dunsley Yorkshire and our most popular Hi-Flame Aidan are able to offer high efficiency and very low harmful emissions. They have been tested to the latest Eco Design regulations, which limit the amount of particulate matter CO2, NOx, and organic gases that the stove will produce during its normal operation.
Smoke Control Areas Suitable
Smoke Control Areas are in place in most UK cities and towns. The burning of logs on old stoves or open fireplaces may result in a fine if the smoke is deemed to be an annoyance. If you choose the right appliance for your home, back boilers that are Defra-approved stoves are not subject to these restrictions.
Wood burners that are exempt from Defra have been designed with Clean Burn technology, which ensures that fuel is burned efficiently and produces a minimum amount of smoke. You can still enjoy a stunning fireplace if you live within a smoke-free zone, however logs must be limited to smokeless mineral fuels.
To be in compliance with Defra requirements, these stoves feature airtight chambers for precisely controlled airflow. They typically employ triple airflow systems to ensure that combustion byproducts are burnt up before they are able to escape the chimney. This reduces the nuisance smoke and minimises the accumulation of soot that could block the flue or reduce gas efficiency.
It is essential that you purchase your Defra approved stove from an Expert Local Retailer who will ensure that the appropriate size of stove is selected for your space to provide the highest efficiency in heating and that it is installed correctly by a HETAS registered installer. They can also help you determine the best chimney liner for a secure installation and offer advice on whether your home needs additional ventilation.
Modern DEFRA approved stoves are superior to traditional open fires or wood burning stoves. They offer a minimum 75 percent efficiency, which is does not only lessen your carbon footprint but also helps you save money. Defra approved back boiler stoves can be used in smoke controlled areas and will require at least 6mm stainless steel twin-wall flexible chimney liner. This is cheaper than the larger 12mm liners required for Ecodesign stoves.
