DEFRA is the acronym for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and they handle regulations and policies concerning the environment, farming and food. Defra approved stoves have been passed rigorous tests to ensure they adhere to the government's strict rules for smoke emission levels during operation. They are specifically designed to burn the fuels of wood and coal more efficiently. This means they produce fewer pollutants.

This is good news for those living in a Smoke Control Area because the law currently bans the release of smoke within these areas unless using an DEFRA approved stove and an authorised fuel. In the past, it was possible to install a non-Defra-approved stove in a Smoke Control Area as long as you used only approved fuels like wood. However, as of January 2022, the law is changing and any non-approved stoves are not allowed to be installed at all unless they've been equipped with secondary or tertiary combustion system which can drastically reduce their production of particulate matter, carbon dioxide, NOx and organic gaseous compounds.

In the case of our Defra approved stoves, they're also equipped with a mechanism which prevents you from closing the top air vent all the way down as this can cause the fire to smoulder and emit smoke into your space. These stoves feature an adjustable air feed that allows you to open the top vent just a small amount and still have an efficient, safe burning.

Another advantage of purchasing a Defra approved stove is that it can be fitted with a 5-inch chimney liner. This is important since there are a variety of building regulations which state that you need an elongated chimney with at least 5 inches of diameter.

A lot of the Defra Exempt stoves we stock at Stove Supermarket are also multi fuel stoves that will allow you to burn approved smokeless fuels, as well as seasoned wood. They are usually referred to as Defra stoves or Defra approved woodburners. They are often abbreviated to SE.

Unlike older stoves, which are not suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas, the latest Defra woodburning and multi-fuel stoves come with secondary and tertiary air systems in order to ensure that the wood is completely burned prior to it leaving the chimney.
