According to a lawsuit filed on Monday, Black veterans have disproportionately more difficulty receiving these benefits. The Yale Law School Veterans Legal Services Clinic filed the suit on behalf of Conley M. Monk Jr.

PTSD

Quil Lawrence of NPR reports that a VA whistleblower informed the veterans that VA documents showed that Black veterans were denied benefits at a higher percentage than their white counterparts.

The lawsuit was filed by Marine Vietnam veteran Conley Monk and Yale's Veterans Legal Services Clinic. The lawsuit cites figures showing that between 2001 between 2001 and 2020, the average rate for Black veterans of disability claims was rejected at 29.5 percent, as compared to 24.2% of white veterans.

The lawsuit seeks compensatory damages for Monk and other Black veterans who were unfairly denied access to benefits. The lawsuit also seeks to make VA to reconsider tens of thousands of other claims which were wrongly denied. The lawsuit was filed in federal court this week.

Traumatic Brain Injury

TBI can be mild, moderate or severe and symptoms may become visible or they may appear in the hours or even weeks following the injury. Some people suffering from PTSD benefit from taking antidepressants such as selective serotonin receptor inhibitors or SNRIs. These medications can help reduce symptoms and aid in getting through daily activities.

The lawsuit cites a study that discovered that between 2001 and 2020 the average rate of denial for Black veterans who applied to receive disability compensation was 29,5%, as opposed to 24,2 percent for white veterans.
