About avon books online Publishing
Avon Books was founded by the American News Corporation in 1941 as a competitor to Pocket Books. They published a variety of genres at first. Avon Books entered the market for romance in 1972 with Kathleen Woodiwiss’s novel The Flame and the Flower. Avon Books quickly became a major player in the field. After Newscorp bought Hearst's book publishing division and merged it with Harper Collins in 1999, Avon focused exclusively on romance. They are now an imprint of HarperCollins, which also owns Harlequin.
In the beginning, Avon published digest-sized paperbacks (similar to the current Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine) in series like Avon Western Reader and Avon Science Fiction Reader. They also published comic books. Joseph Meyers hired an experienced team of editors with strong connections and contacts, including Donald A. Wollheim whose stories in the genre of science fiction and stories of fantasy are highly sought after by collectors.
As a paperback publisher, Avon was among the first to realize that women were a significant and underserved market for its books. Avon's sales representatives were primarily middle-class women, and therefore, Avon sought to appeal to women with books that were entertaining and intellectually stimulating.
In addition to the classics, Avon also produced a collection of contemporary works by authors that were not well represented in the paperback market. The titles included Avon Bard, which featured translated books by Latin American authors such as Marcio Souza and Joao Guimaraes Rosa. The Avon Bard line was eventually folded into the more established Avon Camelot and Discus imprints in 1987.
Following the merger, Avon largely dropped its non-romance hardcovers and paperbacks, moving those to sister company Morrow and focusing entirely on romance. Avon's books are less expensive than other publishers and they have built their name on quality and value.
Although Avon has been through its fair share of scandals, including lawsuits filed by alleged victims of sexual harassment, the business is still profitable and is a major player in online marketplace. Avon has also committed to social responsibility by donating to breast cancer research and domestic violence programs.
About Avon Fiction
Avon Books was founded in 1941 as a publisher of paperbacks. It is among the oldest publishers in the world. It was initially owned by American News Corporation, the publisher was created to be a rival to Pocket Books. Avon's pocket-sized paperbacks were more popular than the Pocket series in the early days. They included ghost stories and sexually explicit romances and fantasy novels. Hearst bought the Avon brand in 1959.
The 1970s were a decade of romance for Avon with multiple blockbuster titles hitting the bestseller lists. Kathleen Woodiwiss’ Shanna spent over 33 weeks on the bestseller list. It was followed by sexy romantics from newcomers Rosemary Rogers, and Elizabeth Lowell. The sexy books of Avon featured males wearing cleavages on their covers.
Avon published a monthly romance book that was marketed as "Avon Romance Treasure" and featured a beautiful front cover that read "clinch". This banner was used to publish popular authors such as Brenda Joyce and Susan Wiggs.
After the digital age exploded, Avon launched a special e-book edition each month that was designated as an "Avon Impulse" title. The major online retailers sold the ebooks. The imprint made it easy for readers to purchase a an hardcover copy of the title with the technology of print-on-demand.
Today, Avon is an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. This is a great prequel to the character Kerr Avon from Blake's 7 (BBC sci-fi from the 1980s). The author does an excellent job of imitating the witty style of dialogue that the series is well-known for. There are plenty of sexy scenes to keep the reader entertained however this is for fans of the series only and wouldn't be enjoyed by anyone who isn't.
Few historians are as fair as Manko was to Avon. She shows that even a huge, successful company can have blind areas, poor decisions and poor management. Her meticulous research and shrewd grasp of business operations will be a surprise to many readers.
It is difficult to rank Avon's role in the growth of the romance genre, but it is definitely in the same league as Mills & Boon and Harlequin. They invented the bodice ripper, and also created a stable of authors that included Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers, and many others. The covers were more sexy and the heroines experienced more sexual encounters than simply sleeping with their hero.
Avon also published a lot of fantasy and science fiction. They did this in digest format, about the size and shape of an modern short story magazine and made them popular. Collectors love a few of these.
The company published a variety of books, both original and reprints written by contemporary writers, and some of the most famous authors of the past. The company also published a wide range of children's literature, but that has decreased in recent years. Many of these were scary tales or fairytales with an ethical message, although some were solely to entertain.
