add in adults treatment and Treatment

ADD and its treatment are often connected to problems at work, school or at home. The psychiatric disorder can be difficult for doctors to diagnose and treat.

human-givens-institute-logo.pngAttention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common name for this psychiatric condition. Mental health professionals use SPECT brain imaging to determine adhd treatment in adults.

Some of the symptoms are being easily distracted, forgetful and unorganized. The use of antidepressants and stimulants can help.

Limbic ADD

The most common form of ADD, also known as classic ADD or hyperactive-impulsive ADD, is characterized by inattention, a lack of organizational skills, difficulty staying on task, and trouble with memory. Brain scans reveal that people with this type have normal activity in the prefrontal cortex at rest and during concentration, but reduced activity in the cerebellum and basal ganglia, which are responsible for the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that enhances focus, motivation and calmness. People with this type have a hard in shifting their focus and are easily distracted by noise and other stimuli, and have short attention spans. They also have trouble falling asleep and often wake up in the middle of the night with anxiety or nightmares. They are easily frustrated and often get angry.

Those with Ring of Fire ADD have all the hallmarks of the classic ADD However, they also struggle to shift their attention from one thought to another thought and from task to task. They are sensitive to light, noise, and touch; they talk too quickly and are impulsive, and easily provoked to a negative behaviors. They have periods of moodiness and low energy levels, are easily angered, and get stuck on negative thoughts and guilt feelings.

Limbic ADD can be mistaken for depression, but it's distinct from depression in that it causes increased activity in the limbic region of the brain (the part that determines our emotional tone and regulates the level of happiness or sadness we are) and reduces activity in the prefrontal cortex both when we are at rest and while in concentration. It is a condition that can be treated with supplements like L-tryptophan, 5-HTP as well as saffron and inositol that increase alertness, focus, mood, and mental clarity; amino acid GABA to reduce neural activity and prevent nerve cells from over-firing or firing erratically and liver support.

It is important to differentiate between ADD and mood disorders, such as Bipolar Disorder which can also cause frustration and irritability as well as low self-esteem. The distinction is that ADD with Limbic Symptoms has a more constant level of anger and frustration over time, whereas Bipolar Disorder symptoms tend to manifest in waves.

Overfocused ADD

Over-focused ADD patients often get stuck in negative thoughts and behaviors that cause excessive worry. They exhibit rigid behaviors that are similar to those of people suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which is why it's frequently incorrectly diagnosed. These individuals often become threatened emotionally when required to shift their focus from one thing to another and react with a threatening or hostile behavior.

They are prone to having an inability to keep their cool and their anger stems from a constant low-grade sadness or negativity "glass half-empty syndrome," and often feeling of despair and worthlessness. They might also have memory issues, experience extreme anger, and have a short fuse.

People who suffer from over-focused ADD are inflexible when it comes to changing tasks, and may be captivated by their hobbies or work. They are at risk of missing deadlines at work, and forgetting appointments at home and they might not finish homework or other school assignments. They can also be very stubborn and resentful if they are punished or reprimanded by their teacher or parents.

Children with hyperfocused ADD can be angry and stubborn, and they may throw tantrums if their interests are not recognized. They may be obsessed with a particular activity like video games, toys, and toys. They also have trouble expressing their feelings, and can be extremely sensitive to rejection or criticism.

This form of ADD is more prevalent in children, and can be difficult to identify. Children often don't realize that their issue is due to their inability to shift their attention from one thing to another. It is essential to talk to an expert since these children are more likely to be misdiagnosed for ADD. This kind of ADD is usually treated using diet changes, supplements, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. This type of ADD is extremely difficult to treat even with stimulant medication due to the fact that it can cause hyperactivity. Functional neuroimaging is often used to differentiate the seven distinct kinds of ADD, and is particularly useful for diagnosing hyperfocused ADD.

Anxious ADD

Many people suffering from ADD have a high degree of anxiety. Comorbidity, also known as having multiple disorders simultaneously is a common occurrence and affects as much as 50% of people suffering from ADD/ADHD. Stress and anxiety can mimic the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. A misdiagnosis can cause unsuitable treatment and frustration.

Anxious ADD can cause issues with school, work and social situations. This kind of ADD could cause low performance and feelings of inadequateness. People who suffer from anxiety ADD are hesitant to take on difficult tasks or activities because they fear they won't succeed.

They also fear being judged or critiqued. They hide their problems to others. In some instances, people are so anxious and stressed that they develop panic attacks. These can be very dangerous and life-threatening, resulting in sweating, a heart that is pounding and breathing difficulties. Anxious ADD differs from Classic ADD because it has increased activity in the basal ganglia, as well as the amygdala. These areas are instinctive and focus on safety. This causes the brain to shut down the PFC, which can make it difficult for those with this condition to focus.

If someone suffers from anxiety and ADD/ADHD their symptoms are more difficult to manage. This is due to treatments for ADD/ADHD, that are designed to increase brain activity, can increase anxiety in people who have anxiety-related ADD.

Amen Clinic psychiatrists employ functional neuroimaging, such as SPECT scans to determine where in the brain high and/or lower levels of activity are occurring. This helps them distinguish between the seven types and determine the best method of treatment.

A psychiatrist will collect an entire medical record and conduct a physical examination to determine if a patient has ADD/ADHD. Additionally, he or she may ask questions about behavior and mood to determine a patient's overall functioning. Some medications are used to treat ADD/ADHD, however, most patients require other treatments in addition, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or nutrition and exercise, strategies for sleep, desensitization and other relaxation techniques. This can aid in improving their ability to manage their emotions and improve their overall performance.

Temporal Lobe ADD

This kind of ADD is a problem with the brain's temporal lobe which is responsible for memory and mood. People suffering from this type of ADD struggle to learn and store information and experience mood swings and are prone to severe anger or aggression issues. They may also suffer from sensory issues like feeling like they're in a dream, seeing shadows or objects change shape or hearing sounds that others don't hear. They can be irritable, sensitive and easily overwhelmed.

This type of ADD is characterized by similar symptoms to Classic ADD. These include low attention spans and disorganization. It also presents with difficulties staying focused or following instructions. This kind of ADD does not cause an excessive amount of impulsivity or hyperactivity. This kind of ADD is more prevalent in females. People with this type of ADD might have low levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine which can lead to feelings of depression and low self-regulation. The symptoms can include sleep problems and feelings of irritability or anxiety.

In this instance brain mapping scans using qEEG of the brain reveal that people with Over-focused ADD have normal activity in their anterior cingulate region, treatments for add the brain's "gear shifter," but they are experiencing difficulty shifting gears. They are unable to shift from one thought or task to the next, and they get stuck in negative thought patterns and behaviors.

This is a type of ADD that is characterized by people who are extremely motivated and productive but are unable to concentrate on their tasks. They can lose track of their schoolwork and teachers or parents can become annoyed or embarrassed by their behavior. They may have a difficult relationship because they are impulsive or reactive, and have difficulty managing multiple tasks or working with others. In some instances, they might suffer from depression or anxiety. They can be prone to panic attacks and are susceptible to hallucinations. The use of medications for this kind of ADD are not advised, since they do not address the underlying cause of symptoms.
