A highly experienced psychiatrist consultant will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your ADHD. This includes a thorough medical history, as well as an assessment using the common ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.
After your assessment After your assessment, you will be informed whether medication is appropriate for your situation. This will take place during your follow-up appointment (which can be done in person via video link or via phone). Your physician will go over the various options for medications available. If you decide to start taking medication, we can help you to titrate your dose to maximize the benefits/side effects balance for you.
This is a process which can take several weeks and requires adjusting your child's dosage gradually until the appropriate balance is reached. It is not uncommon to to titrate as high as three different medicines before you can find the one that is most suitable for your child's ADHD. It is essential that parents are involved in the titration process and keep an eye out for their child's behavior, so they can inform the doctor whether the medication is working or causing adverse reactions.
If you do not decide to return to NHS treatment the medication you take will be provided with an individual prescription that you will need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in the consultation fee). You'll need to attend six-monthly appointments to monitor your medication. This includes blood pressure and pulse measurements. Annual reviews are also required.
Follow-up appointments
Once the evaluation has been completed, you will be able to schedule appointment with the psychiatrist as appropriate. Typically, the appointment will take place through a video call using zoom however in some instances it is possible to schedule an audio-only consultation (again at an extra cost).
We will then go over the options for treatment and then decide on a bespoke, individualised ADHD medication titration. This will include a review and discussion of your medication dosage and any adverse effects you may be experiencing. The cost for these titration consultations is PS150 for face-to face sessions and PS60 for telephone or online video consultations. Medication costs are additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.
The psychiatrist will ask you questions about your family history as well as the impact of your ADHD symptoms on your life and any relationship problems or mental health issues that you might be suffering from. This is due to the fact that ADHD is an inheritable condition, and it is important that we assess any family history that could suggest that you are at risk of developing the disorder.
During this assessment it is essential to be truthful and open with the doctor, as they will be using the information you provide to determine if you are able to meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is an important step because an incorrect diagnosis could lead to inappropriate medication prescription.

Make sure that your GP accepts a Shared Care Agreement, which means that you will be referred to them when you leave the clinic to get a prescriptions for medication.
Medication
Medication is a key part of the journey for many who are looking for an official ADHD diagnosis. The process of getting prescriptions from an NHS psychiatrist can be a hassle and time-consuming. NHS waiting lists can be notoriously long, and GPs may be reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.
One method to circumvent this is to ask your GP to refer you to Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). This means you can select one that provides a private assessment and titration service. This can cut down on wait time considerably and can be more convenient if you're working and have a full schedule.
After you've been identified as a candidate for this treatment, your chosen clinician will examine you and decide whether or not you require to be monitored for a dose of medication. You will need to fill out forms that are different for each provider, but the most common ones are self-reporting questionnaires and medical histories that go to childhood and adulthood. These will help your clinician identify any conditions that could indicate that you shouldn't be taking ADHD medications if they are prescribed.
If you are being titrated the medication will consist of a mixture of stimulants and nonstimulant medicines. These will be carefully assessed and monitored to determine the right combination for you. The titration process can be lengthy and may require several additional appointments before you are stable on your dosage.
The frequency of your follow-up appointments is contingent on the type and amount of medication you're taking. They can be scheduled for monthly or quarterly. This will include your physician making sure that you are on the right medication, logging any side effects you've experienced and making any necessary adjustments to ensure that you remain in a safe dosage. You'll also have to attend a regular health check which can include blood pressure and pulse readings, as well as weight and weight measurements as well as an annual check-up.
For some individuals, it may be that they are satisfied with their medication and don't need any further discussion on their titration. If you need to discuss your titration plan or treatment plan in more detail it is likely that you will be referred back to the private clinic that performed your initial evaluation. In this case, the titration will be included in the consultation fee. The medication will be provided through the private prescription. This could cost more than an NHS prescription since the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
