Stimulants are the most commonly prescribed medication prescribed to children with ADHD.

Stimulants
ADHD medication providers most often prescribe stimulants. They increase the levels of neurotransmitters (chemicals) in your brain, which are known as norepinephrine and dopamine. This helps you concentrate and pay attention.
There are a variety of side effects that can occur particularly if stimulants are used for a long time. Discuss with your doctor what to expect when taking these medications for adhd, and also about possible changes in your mood, appetite and heart rate and how they affect your sleep.
If you take any stimulant medication for prolonged periods of time, you could be at risk of developing addiction or abuse. Addiction is when you feel like you are unable to resist the urge to use a stimulant, even if it has negative side effects. Other health issues that may be caused by the use of stimulant medications include depression and suicidal thoughts. If you suspect you or someone you know could be taking these drugs to harm themselves or others, contact your local police department or other authorities right away.
Some of the most commonly used stimulants used to treat ADHD are amphetamines and methylphenidate (brand-name medication Ritalin, Concerta or Dexamphetamine). Amphetamines are available in immediate-release (short-acting) or extended-release (intermediate-acting) tablets, capsules or liquids. The majority of these medications are taken once or twice daily.
The amphetamines that have a longer acting effect are more effective than their shorter-acting counterparts. They last from six to eight hours and assist you in navigating the day with fewer "ups and downs."
Extended-release stimulants can be combined with an immediate release medication in the afternoon. This is beneficial should your ADHD symptoms start to show up later in the day or you find yourself with an irritability as a result of the medication wearing off early.
A small amount of a long-acting stimulant at bedtime is also an option to help you fall asleep. It's not recommended to take this medication on an empty stomach as it can result in a loss of energy and could cause sleepiness.
In the initial stages of treatment, insomnia can be a relatively common side effect that occurs with stimulants. It can be alleviated by not taking the medication close to the time of bed and getting enough sleep every night.
Another side effect associated with stimulants is anxiety. It can be severe or mild and may result in tics, which are rapid movements or sounds like eye blinking or throat clearing. It can also worsen the symptoms of depression and bipolar disorder.
Although changes in blood pressure and heart beat are possible, these effects are typically not significant. Your doctor may prescribe an medication to lower your blood pressure and Medication Adhd adults improve your heart's function in the event that you begin taking stimulants for ADHD.
Insomnia can also be a result of ADHD medication Adhd adults. It's less of a problem if you begin taking stimulants with a prescription sleep aid or by using a relaxing or meditation technique before going to bed.
