Bunk beds add drama to kids' rooms and provide the feeling of adventure. Ms. Keenan adds a shelf to store books or a reading light in each sleeping nook to make bunk beds more attractive to children.
Many of our kids beds bunk beds beds can be converted into two complete twin beds, Kids Beds perfect if you plan to have your children move to their own bedrooms in the near future. Choose from finishes like brushed gray, cream white and rich walnut.
Ladders or Stairs
When choosing kids beds bunk there is the option to choose between stairs or ladders. Ladders are more affordable and easy to install and offer a straightforward means of climbing into the top bed. They are more secure than stairs, since they provide a greater surface area for children to walk on and have a handrail that is integrated. They also have grooves on the steps, which help prevent slippage when climbing up or down the bed.
If you prefer the style and appearance of stairs, then they can make a more elegant addition for your bunk bed. They can also be used in rooms with limited space as they do not protrude like ladders. They can be constructed from metal or wood, and they can match an array of bedroom designs. Some staircases are equipped with storage drawers that can be an excellent way to expand the size of a bunk bed.
When choosing between a ladder and stairs take into account the age of your child. It is recommended that no one sleep on the top bunk below the age of 6, older children who are comfortable climbing vertically may be better off with stairs instead of a ladder. If you intend to use your bunk bed for guests, for example, older children or adults with limited mobility, it's recommended to use stairs.
A straight staircase along the sides of the bunk requires a minimum of 95" of space on each side. If you do not have the space, you can opt for an u-shaped staircase that does not require as much room but allows you to reach the top bunk in a safe and safely. Some beds come with the option of removing the stairs when they're not being used, which reduces their footprint and makes them more suitable for rooms with multiple uses. You can also find staircases that connect to the ends of the bed and eliminate the requirement for a separate handrail, and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
Guard Rails
Guard rails provide children with the confidence and freedom to climb in and out of bed on their own. They must be positioned correctly to ensure there are no gaps or loosening between guardrails and the bed frame. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer when installing guard rails, and ensure that you check them regularly to ensure they are not loose or have holes that could result in trapping.
One of the most important safety tips for bunk beds is to keep them free from electrical devices and any other objects that could turn into projectiles if your children play or sleep. Make sure you place bunks away from windows, as they could be a danger to fall in the event that children climb on the top level.
You might want to put an evening light on the ladder so that it can illuminate the steps up and down when your child awakes at the night to go to the bathroom, or wake up due to an erupting storm and have to leave their bedroom.
Another excellent security feature for bunk beds is a safety net that can be put up on the top of the bunk to keep children from falling down while asleep or playing. This is a great idea especially for older children, who tend to sleep on the top bunk.
The guardrails must be secured to the bunk beds and can't be removed without tools. Openings in the guardrails above the mattress foundation shall not be larger than 3.5 inches to prevent entrapment and strangulation. To test this, insert the wedge block as shown in Figure 1 into each opening in the lower edge of the uppermost guardrail member and above the mattress's underside foundation. Apply 33 lbf (147 N) in a direction that is perpendicular to the plane of the largest edge of the block for a minute.
It's also recommended to teach kids not to hang anything on the ladders or guardrails for example, such as clothing, belts and sports equipment; instead, a clothes rack is recommended to ensure that these objects do not pose a strangulation danger for your child(ren). Also, make sure that more than one kid should not sleep on the top floor of the bunk, as this can create an imbalance that could cause falling.
Mattresses
Take into consideration the age and size of your child when choosing a mattress for bunk bed. A bunk mattress should last at the least eight years or until the children are no longer sharing the same bedroom. You should select one that grows with your child and still provide enough comfort as they get older.
Bunk mattress sizes are usually twin or full-size, and there are many alternatives that will accommodate either. If your child suffers from asthma or allergies, opt for a hypoallergenic bed with an anti-dust barrier and a moisture-wicking cover. Kids are likely to experience many accidents and spills, which is why a mattress with an antimicrobial layer will help keep the foam safe from harmful bacteria and germs.
Another factor to consider is the feeling of your mattress. Kids are usually heavier than adults, and require an appropriate mattress that is firm but also comfortable. Many latex and hybrid mattresses have one side that is firm and the other soft side to meet children's needs.
Memory foam mattresses are a good choice for children, but we wouldn't recommend them because they tend not to cool effectively and can be a strain on the spines of small children. Consider a latex or hybrid mattress, which provides strong support and cooling infusions that allow your guest or child to sleep comfortably.
A mattress with a low profile is typically the best choice for kids bunk beds. They are designed to be slimmer than standard mattresses and increase the height of the safety rails for the top bunk. They reduce "filler" materials to provide top quality and durability with slim designs.
If your child is looking to try a mattress more hefty than a regular bed, consider an hybrid or innerspring model with comfort layers on the top that can be removed or replaced as your child develops. These models will give you an idea of how the mattress will stand up as your child grows, and you can always include a mattress skirt or mattress pad to stop it from slipping off the frame. Some beds even have side rails or a lip built-in to prevent this from happening.
Storage
Bunk beds can be the ideal way to save space in shared rooms for kids. They can also be an affordable alternative to buying two separate single beds. Many bunks also offer the option of an trundle bed that can be hidden beneath the bunk that is not being used.
To maximize storage and space in a room with bunk beds, consider installing a combination kids bedroom furniture set that includes desks, dressers and/or bookcases. This will let you keep all of your child's personal belongings, clothing and toys in one place without cramming them into overstuffed closets or chests. These sets of kids bedroom furniture can be found from a variety of retailers. They are safe to use and meet federal standards.
Stacked bunks can be an ideal playground for the imagination as children can transform the spaces beneath into cozy places to hide and play. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked six bunks to create the ultimate children' space. It can be used for sleeping, playing or even for superhero cape twirling. The room is decorated with a bubble wallcovering of Chasing Paper, and the ceiling is painted Benjamin Moore Blue Jean.
If you are unable to build a staircase to your stacked bunk beds A ladder is a good alternative. The ladders are constructed using a single socket, Flange, and 90 Degree Side Outlet Fittings. They can be easily adjusted in order to increase or decrease distance between ladder rungs. The ladder rungs can also be placed in a straight line with the ground rather than higher to aid in climbing.
Another method to maximize space in a room that has bunk beds is by installing loft kids beds that can be lowered down to just above the floor. This allows you to slide desks, dressers and toy chests right under the elevated beds. This is a great way to maximize the space in smaller bedrooms or large family homes where beds have to be able to accommodate multiple sleepers.
