Defra Approved

You may have noticed across our site that a number of our wood burning stoves are listed as being DEFRA exempt or DEFRA approved. These terms may seem like an esoteric term to the average homeowner, but they're not.

DEFRA is the acronym for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and they handle regulations and policies concerning the environment, farming and food. Defra approved stoves have passed rigorous tests to ensure that they comply with the strict regulations of the government regarding emissions of smoke during operation. They're also designed to burn approved fuels such as wood and coal more efficiently, which means that they produce far fewer pollutants.

It's a great thing for those who reside in Smoke Control Area since the law currently prohibits smoke emissions in these areas, unless you use an approved DEFRA stove and an approved fuel. In the past it was possible to install a non Defra approved wood stove in a Smoke Control Area, as long as you used only authorised fuels. As of January 2022, the rules will be changed and stoves that are not approved aren't allowed to be used unless they are equipped with a secondary and third-party system that will reduce their productions of particulate carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and organic gaseous substances.

Our Defra approved ranges are also equipped with a mechanism that prevents you from closing down the top air vent completely. This could lead to the fire smouldering and emitting smoke into your home. The stoves have an adjustable air supply that lets you open the top vent just a small amount and still have the safety of a clean, efficient burning.

A Defra-approved stove can also be equipped with a 5-inch chimney liner. This is important as the majority of codes require a chimney to be at least 5 inches in diameter.

Smoke Control Areas

If you reside in a zone of smoke control, you will need a Defra approved stove if you want to legally burn wood in your home. The stoves have been tested by DEFRA to ensure that they meet the strict standards for smoke emissions that are required in areas of smoke control. On the Defra site, you will find a list of places where a stove that is Defra-approved is required.

Multifuel stoves and Defra exempt stoves

A Defra approved stove, also referred to as a DEFRA multi fuel or wood burning stove has passed a rigorous test designed by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The UK government agency is responsible to protect our natural environment, promoting agriculture and food industry and ensuring a flourishing rural economic. The tests that Defra approved stoves must pass are designed to ensure that the appliance only produces low levels of smoke and grit when it is operating.

Stove Supermarket has a range of Defra Exempt Stoves that are multi-fuel stoves. This means that you can burn authorised smokeless wood as well as well-seasoned fuels. They are often called Defra stoves or Defra approved woodburners. They are usually abbreviated to SE.

The most modern Defra woodburning and multi-fuel stoves come with secondary and tertiary ventilation systems that ensure that the wood is fully burned before it leaves the chimney. This is a cleaner process than leaving a log on the stove for long periods of time. It also reduces the amount nuisance smoke that can be produced.

If you live in an area that is a Smoke Control Area, or in the process of moving into one, then a Defra exempt stove is a great option for your home. It is not only more environmentally friendly and efficient, but it also helps in reducing the amount of smoke that can cause a disturbance to your neighbors.

You are still able to use an open fire, barbecues or a pizza oven in your backyard. However, excessive or toxic smoke could be considered a nuisance, and you could be fined. In the Smoke Control Area, you are not allowed to use open flames or stoves for burning damp, rotten, or wet wood or any other fuels.

Burning Other Fuels Other Than Petroleum

Defra Approved Stoves are designed to burn various fuels, including wood. They burn wood with such efficiency that they comply with the strict government regulations for emissions when operating in smoke zones for control. This means that you can use them legally in any smoke control zone provided you're burning authorised fuels such as pellets, logs and Briquettes. Stoves that have been certified by Defra will be marked with the SE' logo that stands for Smoke Exempt.

A Defra-approved stove is different from a standard multifuel stove because it has secondary air vents that pre-heat air before it enters into the firebox. This pre-heated air helps to ensure that the entire fuel is ignited and burned, which results in an efficient combustion process. This also helps prevent the accumulation of soot that can block the chimney. Defra stoves also have internal baffle plates which help to regulate the flames and ensure an even heat distribution.

Using non-Defra approved stoves in areas that are smoke-free could result in heavy fines from the UK government's Department for Environment, defra stove Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). If you wish to avoid being accused of being prosecuted by Defra, only use a DEFRA-approved stove that has been tested according to the government's guidelines.

DEFRA stoves are also referred to as Clean Burn stoves. They are compatible with all kinds of fuel, but they are ideally suited for dry soft and hard wood. The air vents aren't shut completely, which means there is always oxygen available to ensure clean combustion.

This technology is not just compliant with the current government's standards for air quality, but also future Ecodesign requirements which will come in 2022. A large portion of Stovax wood burning and multi-fuel stoves we offer will carry this SIA Ecodesign Ready mark which indicates that they comply with the new, stricter emission standards. These new standards are part of the government’s continuous efforts to keep the air in the country healthy and clean.

Installation

If you live in a Smoke Control Area, a DEFRA approved eco design stoves-exempt multifuel stove can help you to comply with the regulations. These wood-burning and multi fuel stoves have been tested independently in order to ensure that they comply with the strict standards of smoke emission required in a Smoke control area. These stoves can be used to burn wood or other approved fuels, such as coal, without worrying about the levels of smoke they generate.

Stoves that are DEFRA approved are able to reduce smoke levels by using advanced combustion technology that creates less smokiness. These stoves employ a second stage of combustion that burns the waste products that were burned in the first stage. This makes them more efficient and cleaner. In addition to the reduced emissions, these stoves also reduce the amount of soot that accumulates within the flue and chimney.

This is great news especially if you live in a smoke controlled area as it means that you can sit in front of a real fire more often and for longer with the additional benefit of lower energy bills. Due to the less pollution, these types of wood burning and defra Stove multi fuel stoves are eco-friendly since they can be used to burn a wider range of materials than other stoves.

The majority of stoves can be converted to DEFRA exempt by using the simple kit supplied by the manufacturer. This kit alters the air vents on the stove so that they do not shut at night. This is known as slumbering and it allows part-burned combustibles to be released into the air instead of going up the chimney where they can block the flue. DEFRA approved stoves do not slumber and are more sustainable for the environment. They also block chimneys less often.

To get the most benefit of your DEFRA approved stove, it is recommended that you have it professionally installed by an HETAS Registered Installer or an official from the Building Control Office. This will give you peace of mind that your installation has been done to the proper specifications and is in compliance with the latest regulations. It will also help protect your warranty since the installer is able to self-certify their own work.nrg-defra-4-5kw-eco-design-stove-multifu
