Defra Approved Multifuel Stoves

Defra approved multifuel stoves are an excellent choice for people living in areas that are smoke-free. They burn wood and approved smokeless fuels efficiently and are available in a wide variety of styles to meet every taste.

The Defra Logo is usually on the appliance, or in the specifications to indicate that it can be used for Smoke Control Areas. These appliances also have a high energy rating with low emissions.

Clean Burn Technology

Many of the wood burning stoves we sell are Defra approved, meaning they meet stricter standards for emissions when used in conjunction with wood and other approved fuels. These stoves have been tested independently and are designed to burn a range of fuels. A stove that is approved by Defra will include features such as secondary and tertiary burns which can maximize the amount of energy consumed and minimize harmful gases.

Defra approved multifuel stoves typically have an SE logo or the word SE (which means smoke-free) after their name which indicates that the stove has been tested independently to prove it is able to be used legally in a Smoke Control Area with logs and other approved solid fuels. The testing process includes a series of tests to assess the stove's performance over a range of conditions, and to ensure that the stove can produce five grams of particulates per kilogram when burning wood.

To meet the requirements of this standard, stoves that are Defra-approved have an upgraded top air vent that prevents the user closing the top vent completely. Closing the top vent to far will reduce the flow of oxygen to the fire, causing it to smoulder instead of burn. If you were to do this with a non-Defra-approved stove, you would be in violation of the law and may be prosecuted for a nuisance smoke offence.

To avoid smoke, buy wood that has been seasoned or kiln dried. The wood has been dried for many years, which reduces the moisture content to below 20 percent. You can test the moisture content of your wood using a simple wood moisture tester.

You can reduce the amount nuisance smoke produced from a stove that is Defra approved by using only dry, well-seasoned wood that have been burned or kiln dried. Never burn damp, wet or unseasoned wood. This will cause an increase in smoke and you could be fined by the local authority.

Smoke Control Area Approval

DEFRA approved stoves are made to meet strict air quality requirements that are outlined by the government. They can utilize a variety of fuels including wood and a few 'approved' smokeless fuels in Smoke Control Areas (see DEFRA's indicative interactive tool here).

The fumes from burning untreated wood or [empty] other wet fuels in a stove that isn't DEFRA approved or exempt from DEFRA will annoy your neighbours. This could also result in issues with the local air quality particularly if you live in an urban zone. If you are in an area designated as a Smoke Control Area and burn unauthorised fuels or an appliance not designed to be used with authorised smokeless fuels, you could receive a fine or be prosecuted.

Defra approved stoves are made with secondary and tertiary combustion systems that allow fuel to be burned at lower temperatures which, in turn, produces less particulate matter (PM2.5). This is accomplished through stainless steel liners and convection systems that force air down the chimney even after the fire has been extinguished. This lets the stoves burn wood more efficiently and create less emissions.

A Defra Approved Stove also features an adjustment on the top vent, which prevents it from closing completely. When you shut off the air supply to the stove it stops burning properly and starts to smoulder and produce excessive smoke. Defra approved stoves will allow you to shut the vent just a little but not entirely so that the fire can continue to burn at a lower temperature and still be in compliance with UK laws.

When selecting a brand new Defra approved stove it is important to consider the style and design of the stove and whether it will match the style of your home. There are many designs and sizes to pick from including traditional fireplace chambers and inglenooks, to more contemporary designs that look stunning in open plan living areas.

The majority of Defra approved stoves come with a Portable 5KW Stove - MultiFuel Iron Fireplace - NRG flue outlet so they can be used legally in Smoke Control Areas, which comprise the majority of UK cities and towns. It also saves money on installation costs since the stove requires only a 5" liner, instead of the more expensive 6" liner.

Aesthetics

Multi-fuel stoves don't just have to be functional. They can also add style and charm to your home. There are a variety of models available in different styles that can be a perfect match for your style, whether modern or traditional. They typically have sleeker lines and cleaner designs than wood-burning stoves. This makes them a more appealing choice for any space.

Make sure that the stove that you select fits your space and is compatible to your chimney or flue. Also, make sure that the stove's clearance to combustible substances meets local requirements. Check the manufacturer's instructions to determine the distance you must keep combustibles like furniture, curtains, walls and even furniture from your stove.

Another feature you may want to consider when shopping for an all-fuel stove is the airwash system which keeps the glass clean so that you can enjoy the flame. Some multi-fuel stoves have a grate that is removable, which makes it easier to switch fuel and clean the stove.

These stoves are ideal for homes with a rustic or traditional feel like country cottages. Some models are modern, with simple lines and materials like glass and steel. They're great for urban and contemporary homes with a more minimalist look.
