There are a range of multi-fuel stoves exempt from the defra regulations. Defra approved stoves comply with government regulations, and are designed to maximize efficient combustion and low emissions.
This is especially important especially if you live in a smoke-control zone. However, even if you don't need to, a Defra stove is more beneficial for your chimney as well as your neighbors.
Defra Approved
You may have noticed across our website that a few of our wood burning stoves are categorized as DEFRA exempt or DEFRA approved. For the average homeowner, these terms might seem like jargon they don't need to be aware of however this isn't the truth.
DEFRA is the acronym for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and they handle regulations and policies in relation to the environment, agriculture and food. Defra approved stoves have been tested rigorously to ensure that they comply with the government's strict rules for smoke emission levels during operation. These stoves are also designed to burn approved fuels such as coal and wood more efficiently, meaning that they produce less pollutants.
This is a great news for those who live in a Smoke Control Area as the law currently bans the release of smoke within these areas, unless you are using an DEFRA approved stove and a fuel that is authorised. In the past, it was possible to install a non-Defra certified stove in a Smoke Control Area as long as you only used approved fuels like wood. But, as of January 2022, the law is changing and any non-approved stoves are not permitted to be installed at all unless they have been equipped with secondary or tertiary combustion system that will drastically reduce their production of particulate matter and NOx, carbon dioxide and organic gaseous compounds.
In the case of our Defra approved stoves, they're also equipped with a mechanism that prevents you from closing the top air vent all the way down since this could cause the fire to smolder and release smoke into your room. Instead, these stoves come with an adjustable air supply that will allow you to open the top vent slightly while still maintaining a safe and DEFRA stoves Cost efficient burn.
A stove that is approved by Defra can be fitted with a 5-inch chimney liner. This is important as there are many construction regulations that require you need a chimney with at least 5 inches of diameter.
Smoke Control Areas
If you live in a smoke-control zone you'll need a DEFRA-approved stove to burn wood legally within your home. DEFRA has tested these stoves to confirm that they meet the strict standards for smoke emissions required in smoke zones for control. You can view the list of areas for which you will require a Defra approved stove on the defra Stoves cost website.
Defra Exempt Stoves & Multi Stoves for Fuel
A Defra approved wood stove, also called a DEFRA Multi Wood Burning Stove is one that has passed a strict test designed by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs. The UK government agency responsible to protect our natural environment, promoting the food and agriculture industries and ensuring a flourishing rural economic. The tests Defra approved stoves must pass are designed to ensure that the appliance produces low levels of smoke and grit while it is in use.
A lot of the Defra Exempt stoves we stock at Stove Supermarket are multi fuel stoves which allow you to burn authorised smokeless fuels as well as seasoned wood. They are often referred to as Defra stoves or Defra approved woodburners. They are often abbreviated as SE.
In contrast to older stoves that are not suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas, the latest Defra multi-fuel and woodburning stoves feature secondary and tertiary air systems to ensure that the wood is completely burned prior to exiting the chimney. This is more efficient than leaving a log on the stove for long periods of time. It also reduces the amount of nuisance smoke that could be produced.
If you reside or plan to move into a Smoke Control Area then a Defra-exempt stove will be an excellent option for you. Not only is it more environmentally friendly but it can also help reduce the amount of smoke that could upset your neighbors.
You are still able to use open fires, barbecues, and pizza ovens in your garden but be aware that toxic or excessive smoke could be a statutory nuisance and could result in a fine. It is also prohibited to use damp, wet or rotting wood, or other fuels in an open fire or stove inside an area designated as a Smoke Control Area.
Burning Other Fuels
Defra Approved stoves are engineered to burn a variety of fuels, including wood. They burn wood so efficiently that they comply with the strict regulations of the government regarding emissions when operating in smoke control areas. They can be used in any smoke-control area, provided they are burning approved fuels, such as pellets, briquettes, and logs. Stoves that have been certified by Defra will be marked with the SE' logo, which stands for Smoke Exempt.
A stove that is DEFRA approved British stoves-approved differs from a standard multifuel stove due to its secondary air vents which pre-heat air before it enters into the firebox. This pre-heated air helps to ensure that all the fuel is ignited and burned, leading to more efficient combustion. It also reduces soot build in the chimney and keeps it from clogging. The stoves of DEFRA approved efficient stoves also come with internal baffle plates that aid to control the flames and ensure evenly distributed heat distribution.
The use of non-Defra-approved stoves in areas that are smoke-free could result in heavy fines from the UK government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). If you want to avoid being charged by Defra make sure you use a DEFRA-approved stove that has been inspected in accordance with government criteria.
DEFRA stoves are also known as Clean Burn stoves. They can be used for all kinds of fuel however, they are most effective with wood that is soft and dry. They are designed with air vents that are unable to be closed completely so that the stove will always have oxygen to help ensure the clean combustion process and reduce the risk of noxious gases and soot.
This technology is not just compatible with the current standards for air quality of the government but also with the upcoming Ecodesign requirements that will be implemented in 2022. A large portion of Stovax multi-fuel and wood burning stoves we sell will bear this SIA Ecodesign Ready mark which confirms that they meet these new stricter emissions standards. These new standards are part of the government’s continuous efforts to ensure that the air in the country clean and healthy.
Installation
If you reside in a Smoke Control Zone, a Defra-exempt multifuel stove can help you to comply with the regulations. This is because these wood burning and multi fuel stoves have been independently tested to ensure they comply with the strict standards of smoke emissions required in a Smoke Control Area. They can burn wood, or other fuels like coal without concern about the amount of smoke they emit.
Stoves that are DEFRA approved are able to reduce smoke levels through advanced technology for combustion that produces less smokiness. These stoves typically use the second stage of combustion that re-burns a portion of the waste products from the first stage, making them more efficient and cleaner. They reduce not just the amount of emissions but also the amount of soot that gets into the chimney and flue.
If you live in a region which is smoke-free, this is a great thing to be aware of. You can enjoy a real fireplace more often and for longer. Additionally, you'll save money on your energy bills. As a result of the lower levels of pollution, these kinds of wood burning and multi fuel stoves are eco-friendly since they can burn a wider range of materials than other stoves.
The majority of stoves can be converted to DEFRA exempt with a simple manufacturer supplied kit. This kit can alter the vents for air on the stove to ensure that they do not close at night. This is referred to as slumbering, and allows part-burned combustibles to be released into the atmosphere rather than going up the chimney, where they could cause obstruction to the flue. DEFRA approved stoves don't sleep, and therefore are more eco-friendly and far less likely to block a chimney.
To make the most of your DEFRA approved stove It is recommended that you have it installed professionally by a HETAS registered installer or an Building Control Officer. This will give you peace of mind that the installation was completed according to the correct specifications and in line with the latest regulations. In addition, it can also help to guarantee your warranty as the installer can self-certify their work.
