Renault Clio Replacement Key
Renault cars come with a distinct key system than other car makers. Instead of the traditional key that can be turned into a lock cars utilize a keycard which is inserted into the dash panel reader. A button is press to activate the card.
If you lose your one and only Renault key, it could take time and cost money to find replacement keys from a major dealer. We have Renault keys and cards on hand so we can help you get back into the car in a short time.
Transponder Chips
Renault has a variety of different systems when it comes to their key locks and immobilisers and the latest models starting from 2000 include transponder chips. These are small mini circuits within the key that send signals to the car's computer system If the signal isn't received it will stop the engine from being started. This is a good security measure to ensure your vehicle isn't stolen and only you are able to start it.
A replacement key that has transponder chips is a bit more expensive than a basic non-transponder key, this is due to the extra manufacturing costs of having a micro-circuit within the key, but this does not mean that you will have to pay the full amount. There are locksmiths who can make an alternative key that has a transponder chip for an affordable cost than you would be paying at an auto dealer.
Many Renault owners who have lost their keys or cards believe that the only solution is to visit their dealer. This could be a long process and you may be waiting some time to receive your new key. You can instead call a locksmith to make a replacement Renault Key at only a fraction of the price it costs and takes a dealership.
Keys and keycards can become damaged or even fail. This is usually caused by the internal workings of card bending and cracked over time. These can be repaired by certain Renault key card repairers, however it is only an interim fix and the card is likely to fail again in the future. A professional locksmith will be able to remove the chip from your old key, and then program a new Renault key using laptop software. This will restore the functionality of your remote and allow you to start the vehicle as normal. This will also help to keep your car safe from theft as only the right key will be able to activate the immobiliser.
Immobilisers
Immobilisers are electronic devices that prevent your car from being hot-wired, or driven away without the proper key. Since 1998, they are mandatory in the UK for all new vehicles. They are built in the fobs or keys of your car. When the key is activated the code is sent to the ECU (Electronic Control Unit). If the code doesn't match, then the ECU disables certain components that are needed to operate the engine and then drive the car away.
This prevents criminals from using specialized devices that copy the signal that is generated by your key and transmits it to the ECU of the vehicle to allow it to start. This has significantly reduced car thefts since it is extremely difficult to steal vehicles with this technology fitted, and is the reason insurance companies usually give you discounts on your premium if it is fitted.
The immobiliser mechanism is usually hidden within the head of your car key. It consists of a microchip that is activated when the key is placed into the ignition barrel. A coil inside the barrel reads the chip and sends an indication to the ECU that can only be deactivated by the use of a key that is programmed or by taking the chip off the key.
The earliest Renault models included static codes that could be easily copied using special devices. Modern versions employ rolling or changing codes, which can only be duplicated by the proper technology. This has increased the effectiveness of these systems and it is essential that only professionals who have been approved by Thatcham Research install these anti-theft devices.
If you have a renault Clio card or key that isn't working, it may be necessary to program it again. At Car Keys Solutions we keep all Renault keys and repairer cards in stock, and are able to cut and program an entirely new key while you wait, usually within one hour of your phone call.

Key Cards
The hands-free card is a crucial component in Renault's popular range of cars. The tiny device can be used to unlock and begin the vehicle and also allow drivers to control a variety of other functions, like the lighting and the sound welcome sequence, and can even act as a replacement for a traditional car key when the driver is not driving. The hands-free card was initially created in 2001, when Renault prepared to launch the Laguna II saloon. Bernard Dumondel was in a hotel and saw how easy it was to lock a room with a magnet card. He developed the idea further and eventually made it a standard feature of Renault's vehicles.
To make use of the hands-free card you'll need a reader installed in the centre console of the vehicle. The reader and the key card can be programmed with the AVDI or PROTAG programs available from Abrites.
Remote Buttons
Renault has an established reputation for innovation. They created the first 'hands-free card', a tiny device that allows you to unlock and start your car without touching the door handle. It was the first technology that an auto manufacturer could offer its customers and revolutionized the way people drive. Its design made it easier to get in and out of cars and it is one of the most widely used features in every car that is on the road in the present.
What is the procedure? The key card contains an internal microprocessor which must be programmed for the vehicle. This is done using a special tool such as the AVDI or PROTAG programmer. The key also has the ability to transmit its own identification number, which allows it to connect with the vehicle's immobiliser system.
The chip inside the key recognizes the moment you press the button on the remote, and tells the vehicle to respond in the same way. This can include anything from opening the doors, to changing the radio station or setting the temperature control. This is what makes Renault an extremely sophisticated piece of technology.
The "hands-free" card was the idea of a design group led by Bernard Dumondel. He was working on the Laguna II, a saloon that was believed to be the modern-day car of the 21st century. He was staying in the hotel and was trying to use the keys in his room. He realized he could make a key which would lock and start the vehicle by simply pressing it.
The key is comprised of an outer casing (usually black) buttons that are black, a chip transponder, and an aluminum blade. The case can be changed by using a key that contains the transponder chip of another Renault remote key. This is an easy and effective solution if your key has been severely damaged, for example the buttons are broken or worn out. If, however, you have a new key but it doesn't start your car it is likely because the immobiliser isn't transferred to the new key. To test this, hold the old key in place with the new one and the car should begin.
