Defra Approved Multifuel Stoves

Multifuel stoves that are approved by Defra are an excellent choice for those who live in areas with smoke control. They are extremely clean and can burn wood or authorized smokeless fuels.

The Defra logo is usually present on the appliance, or is written in the specification to indicate that it is suitable for use in Smoke Control Areas. They also have an energy efficiency rating that is high and low emissions.

Clean Burn Technology

We sell a number of wood burning stoves which are Defra-approved. This means that they are able to meet the strictest emission standards when used with wood or other approved fuels. This is because these stoves have been built to work with a variety of different fuels and have been tested independently to ensure that they don't emit excessive smoke. Also, a Defra approved stove has features like secondary and tertiary combustion which help to maximise the amount of energy in the combustion process and reduce harmful emissions.

Multifuel stoves that have been approved by Defra typically have an 'SE' logo or SE (which means smoke-free) after their name, which signifies that the stove has been independently tested to prove it is able to be used legally in a Smoke Control Area with logs and other approved solid fuels. The testing process includes several tests to assess the stove's performance over different conditions, and to ensure that the stove can produce a minimum of 5 grams of particulates per kilogram when burning wood.

To comply with this standard, stoves that are Defra-approved have a modified top air control that prevents the user closing the top air vent completely. Closing the top vent to far can reduce the oxygen supply to the fire and cause it to smoulder rather than burn. If you attempted to do this with a non-Defra-approved stove, you'd be in violation of the law and could be prosecuted for a number of nuisance smoke offenses.

To avoid smoke, buy wood that has been seasoned or kiln dried. It is wood that has been dried over many years which reduces the amount of moisture to less than 20%. You can check the moisture content of your wood by using an easy wood moisture meter.

You can also limit the amount of noxious smoke that is produced by your Defra approved stove by only using dry well-seasoned, kiln dried, or spruce logs. You should never use damp, wet or unseasoned wood as this will produce a lot of nuisance smoke and could lead to a fine from the local authority.

Smoke Control Area Approval

DEFRA approved stoves are made to meet the strict air quality requirements that are outlined by the government. They can utilize a variety of fuels such as wood, as well as some 'authorized smokeless fuels within Smoke Control Areas (see DEFRA's indicative interactive tool here).

The smoke that is produced by burning untreated wood or other wet fuels in a stove that is not DEFRA approved or exempt from DEFRA will cause a lot of irritation to your neighbors. This could also result in issues with the quality of air in your area particularly if you reside in an urban area. You could be prosecuted or fined if you burn unauthorised fuels in the Smoke Control Area or use an appliance that was not designed to work with smokeless fuels.

Defra approved stoves are made with secondary and tertiary systems of combustion that help to burn fuel at lower temperatures which, in turn, produces less particulate matter (PM2.5). This is achieved by using stainless steel liners and a unique convection system that pushes air down the chimney - even when the fire has gone out. This lets the stove burn wood and other fuels more efficiently, while emitting significantly less carbon dioxide.

A Defra Approved Stove also features an adjustment on the top vent, which prevents it from closing all the way. If you cut off the air supply to the stove, it will stop burning properly, smoulder excessively and then start producing smoke. Defra approved appliances permit you to close the vent but not completely so that the flame will burn at a lower temperature and still be in compliance with UK regulations.

When choosing a new Defra approved stove, it is important to consider the style and design of the stove, and whether it will fit in with the decor in your home. There are many sizes and styles to pick from including traditional fireplace chambers and inglenooks, to more contemporary designs that look great in open-plan living spaces.

Most stoves that are Defra-approved feature five-kW chimney outlets, allowing them to be utilized in Smoke Control Areas. This is the case for most UK towns and cities. This will also save you money on your installation costs, as the stove will require five" flue liner instead of a more costly 6" liner.

Aesthetics

Multi-fuel stoves don't have to be functional. They can also add style and appeal to your home. Many models are available in a variety of styles to match your style either modern or traditional. They usually have sleeker lines and cleaner finishes than wood-burning stoves. This makes them a better option for any room.

Make sure that the multi-fuel stove you choose will fit in your space and is compatible to your chimney or flue. Check that the stove meets local requirements for clearance from combustible material. You can get an idea of these requirements by reading the guidelines of the manufacturer, which should state how far you have to keep flammable items like curtains or walls away from your stove.

When you are shopping for a multi-fuel stove you may think about the airwash system. This will keep the glass windows clear to allow you to enjoy your fire. Some 5kw multi fuel Stoves defra approved-fuel stoves even include an grate that can be removed, making it easier to change the fuel and clean the stove.

Defra approved multi-fuel stoves are designed to minimize emissions and pollution and are therefore an environmentally friendly option for homeowners who are concerned about their environment. They are also highly efficient and permit you to make use of less fuel and reduce your heating costs.

Defra multifuel stoves come in a variety of styles that can be adapted to suit your preferences. Inset stoves, like the Hamlet Solution 5 Compact or the Woodford Lovell C400, can be inserted in an existing fireplace opening or wall for a seamless appearance. While cylindrical stoves such as the Opus Harmony or the ACR Solis are slim and rounded and can be placed on a hearth to save space.

A lot of stoves feature classic designs that reflect their heritage, with features like cast iron construction and elaborate details. These models can be perfect for country cottages as well as other homes that have an old-fashioned, rustic look. Some models are more contemporary in design, with simple lines and materials like steel and glass. These models are perfect for homes with minimalist designs like those found in urban areas or modern homes.

Energy Efficiency

You can be certain that a multifuel stove certified by DEFRA will be in compliance with or exceed the most recent standards for clean air. Leading stove manufacturers like Arada, Stovax and Parkray have invested in cutting-edge combustion technology that reduces the amount of smoke produced during the burning process. In conjunction with the most up-to-date clean air technologies like secondary and tertiary combustion systems these modern stoves are more sustainable than their previous models and will help reduce your household fuel bills.

Whether you live in a Smoke Control Area or not there's a stove ideal for your home, from the stunning Danish design of the Uniq 37 to the cosy and modern design of the Arundel Deluxe. There are also models with more traditional designs that can be used in existing fireplace chambers or inglenooks.

They include matte black, gloss black enamel majolica, majolica and buttermilk gloss enamel. A majority of our multifuel stoves comply with 2022 EU Ecodesign emissions reduction standards, allowing you to cut down on your energy bills while making a positive contribution to the environmental sustainability.

DEFRA approve wood stoves are also available to those who live in a Smoke Control Area which makes it simple to stay on the right side of the law. Always remember to use authorised types of fuel (like'smokeless anthracite coal) in your stove since it's illegal to burn damp wood or other wet fuel and you could be fined.

nrg-modern-multifuel-stove-5kw-defra-ecoIf you live in the Smoke Control Area, opt for a DEFRA Approved Multifuel Stove with the ClearSkies mark to ensure that you're following the law. This means that the stove has been tested to ensure it complies with all current UK and European emissions regulations which include those for smokeless and wood fuels. You can easily check the status of a stove on its page of products by looking for the mark that says "DEFRA Approved" or "Approved by DEFRA stoves features".
