How to Repair Double Glazing Windows

Glass-Replacement-150x150.jpgIf you have double glazing it is possible that you will encounter issues with handles, hinges and gaskets. You can often resolve these issues without having to replace the entire window, which saves time and money.

Condensation can form in the space between the two panes. This usually indicates that the window is damaged and requires attention.

1. Broken Panes

A broken double pane glass could expose your home the elements. It is not always necessary for the entire window sash to be replaced to resolve this issue. Double pane windows can be fixed with an adhesive that is specifically designed to be placed inside the cracks.

This short-term method is employed to prevent superficial fractures (such stress cracks) that can occur when temperature changes cause the glass to shrink and expand. If the glass has broken, it may be necessary to completely take the damaged glass off and replace it.

The seals between two panes can wear out or be damaged, causing misting and condensation on the windows. These problems are typically caused by moisture that is trapped between the glass panes or that gets into the wall through the window frame. No matter the source moisture is a problem for double-glazed windows because it can lead to water damage and mold growth, which can be costly to treat.

To get the misting or condensation problem under control, you should first try wiping your double-glazed windows with cold water. This may help temporarily resolve the problem, especially in the case of warm and humid. You can also consider using a dehumidifier in the room where your double-glazed windows are located which is particularly useful during the summer.

If the issue continues, an expert in double glazing is able to visit your home and clean the space between the panes of your glass. A tool can also be used to create an outline of a score line around the outside of the windows, where you can cut the glass using a glass cutter. After this, remove all the glazing points from your window opening. This should be done with the sash still in place, although it's easier to work on a flat surface such as a table.

2. Seals

The window seal is an integral component of double glazing. It plays a significant part in keeping your home efficient, draught-free, and safe. The seal spans the inner frame's uPVC frame and creates an air-tight seal over the gas-filled space between the two panes of glass in the window doctor. This is a key part of the insulative effect your double glazing delivers and any problems or failures to seals can greatly diminish the benefits.

If your seals aren't doing their job, the result will be condensation between the panes. It's not just ugly; it can lead to damp and mould in the home. It can cause damage to flooring, furniture, walls and create serious health issues for those with respiratory conditions such as asthma.

The majority of double glazing manufacturers provide a service that allows you to repair your windows without the need to replace the entire unit. This is not only cheaper but also faster and more eco-friendly. There are other DIY options, such as caulking to stop leaks and double glazing moisture intrusion or self-adhesive seals that are placed directly on the junction of the window sash and the frame.

A professional call is the easiest and most effective solution to a failed window seal. They'll be able to replace the window seal, double glazing preventing the entry of moisture and air which could cause costly damage, and also make your home more energy efficient.

Check the warranty period on your double glazing. It is usually between 10 and 20 years. This can save you money in the event that seals are damaged and the windows have to be replaced. Some installers will drill the misty double glazing to eliminate the moisture and create an entirely new seal. This will prevent it from misting in the future. However, this is an interim fix and a plug has to be put into the hole to keep it closed.

3. Locking Mechanisms

Double-glazed windows have air gaps between the glass panes to provide insulation against changing temperatures outside and also to keep warm inside the house. This kind of window can also be described as an insulation unit (IGU). They can offer you a lot of energy efficiency which saves on your heating costs. But, they're not impervious to damage and some issues may arise that require double glazing repairs.

Many of these issues are easy to fix and are much less expensive than having to replace the entire window. Contacting a company that offers double glazing repair can ensure that the job is completed correctly and with minimal fuss. Often these companies will provide a free quote to allow you to compare prices and the quality of their work.

It is important to check the warranty that came with your double-glazed window as it will typically cover the cost of a repair. This is a standard feature of double glazing and usually lasts from 10 to 20 years, however some companies offer lifetime guarantees.

If you are unable to open your double glazed window or it appears there is mist between the panes, then it is likely due to the seal blowing. This can happen if the frame of your window replacement moves slightly or if the packaging that keeps the glass sheets in place is damaged over time.

You can fix double-glazed windows yourself, but it's usually more cost-effective to hire a professional. If you decide to attempt it yourself, you must follow the manufacturer's guidelines and use specific tools to complete the task. It is also worth bearing in mind that if you attempt to remove the glass yourself then you'll lose any warranty you may have and you could end up with a bigger cost than if simply made contact with the company from whom you purchased your windows.

After the broken pane has been removed, you can put it back using plastic spacers to make sure it fits in the frame and add any necessary uPVC beading. After that, you can install the gasket of a new wedge and lock the window in its place.

4. Weatherproofing

If your double glazing windows are difficult to open or are sagging There are a few options for fixing them. You can oil the hinges, handles or mechanisms to see if this helps. You can also change the gaskets to improve your windows' performance and stop them from opening up to cold air and drafts. These are available at a hardware shop or online. They are simple to install. If you do not have the time to do it yourself, you can always hire a professional to complete the task for you.

If you've got condensation between the window panes, this is also something that can be fixed easily. It usually happens due to an unsound seal, which will allow moisture to get into the space between the glass panes. This can cause mist to develop on the glass, which is undesirable and ineffective.

Anyone with a little DIY knowledge can easily change the gaskets. Gasket sealers are essential for a good seal, and can help cut down on energy costs. You can also use a calk to fill any gaps and give your windows an extra boost in weatherproofing.

The seals may also fail on double-glazed windows. This could be due to painting the windows near them or renovation work on the property or general wear and tear. If you discover that your double-glazed windows are leaking, it is important to fix them in the earliest time possible.

Double-glazed windows are an excellent addition to any home. They provide you with energy-efficient and safe windows that keep the heat in and the weather outside. There are times that it is recommended to replace your double glazed windows, rather than repair them. This could be the case with broken panes, extensive rot or frames that are not suitable for double glazing units.
